Mark it on your calendar, April 27, 2019, The famous Union Pacific Big Boy 4014, the worlds largest steam locomotive ever built, has successfully done a steam test at the Cheyenne, Wyoming roundhouse after a 5 year rebuild. Go now to YouTube and watch the old girl build up steam pressure and then wait for the moment when the whistle is activated after nearly 60 years after it's retirement. Just listening to 4014 was as close to watching a sleeping giant awakening from it's slumber and when the whistle finally went to full tone, I had tears in my eyes and I'm almost 59 years old for cryin' out loud!

If you want to watch a miracle happen after everybody said something as big as this would NEVER be restored to operating condition, go now to YouTube and watch it. After 30 plus years working on the railroad and soon to be retired, I now am glad my childhood wish to see a Big Boy operate again is coming true. I can't wait to go see it run when it becomes road worthy and hopefully ride on an excursion behind it. Big kudos to the guys and gals at the Union Pacific Railroad for doing what was said impossible by all the nay-sayers. You guys are rock stars!

And yes, I'm still wiping tears off my face. Life is good again. :D

Yes, it's been over 6 years since I've submitted ANYTHING, but I found some railroad pics from my early days and thought I would share them with you.
Sorry for the wait. Hope to upload some more time permitting or next 6 years. :XD:
Ready To Depart East Chattanooga 1985.
With a full head of steam, ex-Southern Railway number 722 starts her 3 mile journey to Jersey station. This was when Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum was really getting started full time at their site. Those open air cars between the passenger coach and caboose were a real soot collector at times! Today, this excellent railroad runs a classy operation with both vintage steam and diesel locomotives, and possesses one of the finest shops for restoring and maintaining anything railroad related.
Today, number 722 resides in North Carolina on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad awaiting a restoration that may or may not come soon.
Her sister locomotive number 630 is doing fine at TVRM in service and fully rebuilt.

Hartwell Railway Depot 1986.
Taken during an off day. People still came to inquire when the next run would be. Classic country depot built in the early 1900's. A rare gem.
Sadly, this is no longer possible. The rails have been removed and the depot sits unused. Wish I could turn back time...

Hartwell Railway Steam Locomotive 11.
Found this pic of our steam locomotive I took back in 1986. It was an off day, so the "Prairie Princess" takes a well deserved rest on the turntable lead.
Sadly, this is no longer possible to ride, since it was sold back in 1989 and now sits stuffed and mounted as a display in a park in Kentucky.

I got the good news at the end of February from the retirement board. I am 100% certified for full benefits and there are no gaps in my work years, so I can leave anytime I wish.
However, I can't draw from it until I reach 60 on my birthday next year, so I plan on working a easier afternoon shift until the end of this year, since the board suggested that would give a bit more added to my monthly retirement check, so what the heck.
Besides, I'm now in control in when I choose to go, since it won't matter if I get laid off or fired. Cute part is my General Manager actually asked if I would consider working longer since we are in short supply of qualified engineers on my division. I said sure, as long as nothing pisses me off, then all bets are off. Sure feels good to have that kind of control after all I've been through. :evillaugh:

Congratulations, my old friend!  Nothing to do now but learn how to play golf, fishing and tennis unless the Mrs. has one hell of a 'honey do' list...and I'll bet you're even looking forward to that!

What you mean, "look forward to that?". She's already hit me with the "do-list" so hard it comes in volumes, not pages, and I'm not even retired yet for corn's sake!
As for the golf, when she's asleep, I do good to sneak a peek at the GOLF channel, provided I keep the volume so low that only a microbe can actually enjoy listening to it.
But I digress, how's things with you and Heels?

Mighty glad to hear from you, my friend. :handshake:
Well, just about the same. Still waiting for my 30 years to be confirmed after the end of February and it can't get here soon enough.
Me and the Mrs. are ok, but we both have had lingering side effects from that damn flu episode late last December. The doc said it was partly from our immune system taking a header so badly, but mainly just being older and not being able to bounce back like we were younger. I could have figured that one out without visiting him and paying for info I already knew...

How about you and Heels? I do have high hopes you both are well and the recoveries have progressed in a positive way. Since Tumblr committed PC-Suicide, have you been able to find a better site for your art? Most peeps I've talked to have had not much luck, other than HF, but that place is a Snobville, so what to do, eh?

Not much interesting or exciting on my part. Hope to get back into my art soon, or post some more railroad pics from my earlier days when it was fun and nor regulated by today's government idoits (remember when days were fun and not regulated to death? Pepperridge Farms does).
Anywho, give my best to Heels, and I look forward to more delicious cheesecake from you when the inspiration strikes you.

Sorry for the delay.  Had to spend a few days in the hospital...no big deal, minor surgery on my leg.  Sorry you and the Mrs. aren't 100% yet.  No flu in this house this year (knock on wood), few really bad colds and the usual crap that come with old age, well for me anyway (getting old ain't for pussies).  At 34, Heels is healthy as a horse and eats like one, too.
Liked the pictures of the trains and stations you posted.  Something about an old train station that takes you back to an easier time and place when people weren't in such a hurry to get nothing done.  And the trains looked more like works of art.
Haven't been posting much lately.  I find DA is becoming more of a pain in the butt than it's worth.  They deleted several of my pics a few days ago, some of which have been up for a couple of years or more and the other site tend to be more 'pornish' than I care for.  I mostly send stuff directly to loyal followers now.

Hope all is going good after the surgery. I know you and Heels had a time recovering after that near fatal accident, but mighty glad you both are still here with us. Me and the Mrs. are getting better, but that flu was definitely the worst to get over. Like Mick Jagger said in the intro to "Mother's Little Helper" back in the 60's:

"What a drag it is getting old"...

I'm glad my train pics were pleasing to you. I still have a bunch so I plan to post a few more time permitting. Yeah, I miss those days very much when all the damn government regulations were not so strangulating as it is now. Sad to say that because of those progressives ( Maoist/communists actually), there is a growing movement to ban any active steam locomotives because in their infinite wisdom (remember kids, we know what's good for you because we're the government) those wonderful machines are killing mother earth. One day, I hope sanity becomes the norm, but...

Yep, dA is making life less enjoyable here to the point that I don't post any art anymore. I laugh that when I read that Tumblr, when looking on how to deal with their problem, took a page from dA and did the big wipe at their site. You know the, "Hey, there's a bad tree. We must burn down the entire forest to solve the problem!". Anywho, be sure to take care and give my regards to the lovely Heels for a good job in your care.
