I made this coming up on a year ago for Legend of the Cryptids and it's one of the few I've done that I actually like somewhat. There are some others I did after this that I'm also proud of but I don't think I can post them yet. I'll ask some time.  I'm only posting the regular because I think the advanced turned out pretty crummy :( Also, the story is that she is using time magic to open a PORTAL IN TIME :iconakuplz:   so that she can save her hubby from dying or something.

Generally I try to do as much from imagination as possible. Then I take a step back and look at what's not working and ask why, then I look at a reference and apply the things from the reference that I'm missing in my take. So yes and no. My goal is to use reference as an enhancement rather than a crutch. Something that puts the final touches on an idea.
