My Bio
My name is Antonio Bernal, I'm a Spanish self-taught artist based in Cork, Ireland.

The Man in the Hat is a fictional character who incidentally appeared in my paintings when I started experimenting with watercolors, in Autumn 2011. At first, he was just an easy figure for my compositions, but as he kept appearing in my artwork, he became the protagonist of the series.

I like portraying quiet, light-hearted and beautiful scenes that the Man in the Hat finds in his amazing, imaginary journeys.

Watercolour and ink is my favourite medium. I love the unpredictability and the transparency of watercolour. I find painting with a water medium is both great fun and very stimulating, as the water creates shapes on its own and this adds an spontaneity that reflects into my artwork.

The series has a strong narrative element, but there is no story as such. Through the different illustrations the viewer is able to make up their own story, following the many different locations and situations presented in the illustrations. This apparent but non-existent plot provides a solid narrative background which enhances the story-telling feeling of the series, where travelling scenes and landscapes are a recurrent theme.

You can find and follow the Man in the Hat in:

Twitter: themaninthehat_

I hope you enjoy my illustrations as much as I do enjoy painting them.

The man on his own, with the universe above It was a warm summer night. The Man in the Hat took his bag pack, his old telescope, a big dusty astronomy book and a lantern. He left his friends' house where the party was taking place and walked down the path, surrounded by the cypresses along the way. Once he found a spot he liked, he sat down and gazed at the stars for hours...some people would have said he was lonesome, but he didn't feel that way. How can you feel lonely when you have millions of stars all around you? After a while, he started to feel a bit cold, so he walked around and gathered some wood to lit a fire. A shooting star mad

The Man in the Hat.- The Man in the Hat is a fictional, silent character, who is the protagonist of this watercolor illustration series. The series has a strong narrative element, but there is no story as such! Through the different illustrations you will be able to make up the story yourself, with the many different locations and situations that he finds in his amazing, imaginary journeys. The illustrations portray quiet, lighthearted and beautiful scenes, painted with watercolor paints, ink pens and a touch of color pencils to achieve a colorful and lively style with a strong influence from comic books.
