Maedhros is one of the most tragic characters in The Silmarillion
, and forever my favorite person from all of Tolkien's legendarium. I wanted to incorporate a lot of the themes of his life and especially death here. In a moment before casting himself into the flames of the earth, he reflects on all he's lost for the avarice of the Silmaril: his home in Valinor and the light of the Trees, his father, his hand, and five of his brothers (hence the bloodied stars)... so many valiant people perished in the War of the Jewels and the kinslayings he and his family started.
I've never tried to paint him before, and hardly paint people at all so please forgive my many mistakes. Also, some of the effects I've used don't come across well. The paint on the stars is a deeper red and very metallic, and his armor and clothing is also accented with silver paint. The Silmaril and his eye have a ton of pastel/ white sparkles and really glitter irl. Thankfully the goldleaf shines well in photos/ scans at least.
I tried to capture the glitter here:
