All I've Lost by TheLongDefeat All I've Lost by TheLongDefeat
Maedhros is one of the most tragic characters in The Silmarillion, and forever my favorite person from all of Tolkien's legendarium. I wanted to incorporate a lot of the themes of his life and especially death here. In a moment before casting himself into the flames of the earth, he reflects on all he's lost for the avarice of the Silmaril: his home in Valinor and the light of the Trees, his father, his hand, and five of his brothers (hence the bloodied stars)... so many valiant people perished in the War of the Jewels and the kinslayings he and his family started. :(

I've never tried to paint him before, and hardly paint people at all so please forgive my many mistakes. Also, some of the effects I've used don't come across well. The paint on the stars is a deeper red and very metallic, and his armor and clothing is also accented with silver paint. The Silmaril and his eye have a ton of pastel/ white sparkles and really glitter irl. Thankfully the goldleaf shines well in photos/ scans at least. :) I tried to capture the glitter here: Psx 20181009 142612 by RiverHound

Also, listen to Steve Conte's "Heaven's Not Enough": www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT9vwy…
and Insomnium's "Lose to Night": www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw81mc…
if you want even more sad feels for Maedhros. ;_; I listened to those both on repeat to paint him.

12 x 8" watercolor, goldleaf, metallic paint, glitter, salt, gouache, pen

I love the color choices and the silhouetted shapes and outlines for the trees. Looking at the character's face and the fire, this comes across as a solemn, kind of somber work.

Thank you! I rarely do art with any kind of strong emotion, and I'm glad to hear it shows through here. :)

He's one of my favorites too. :) Good choice.
I love those trees. Were they blocked out with masking fluid?

Thank you! :) I'd love to paint all the sons of Fëanor eventually.

Nope! I've heard a number of horror stories with masking fluid so I've never used it. ^^;

I can't say there was really any special technique- just paint either the tree or the background, let it try, then paint the other one. ha ha

Ah yes... the old "no trick, just patience" trick... I could use a bit more practice with that trick.

Honestly,  find either chatting in the thumbshare chat on here, or browsing the subreddits for r/tolkienfans or r/dogs to be a good way to occupy time between drying layers. ha ha Just enough time to be honestly distracted, but not enough to abandon the project at hand :D

I love the colour palette you used here :) Makes this painting to look warmth and solid  Also i love the combination between the purple and the yellow-red fire on the background! You did a wonderful job here!

Thank you!!! I'd love to paint both of them, especially Fingon, so I could use goldleaf in his hair. Do you have any ideas or suggestions, if I were to paint them?

no, just wander through their story and
pick or choose what you think would make
a nice drawing :)

there is no need to pick great moments
like fingolfin dueling morgoth

maybe, fingolfin and fingon
discussing about following feanor to middleearth

It's an incredible book! Dreamlike mythology, heart-rending battles and loss, and a huge sense of doom and despair for so many people striving against their fate.

That's what I've heard!  And that's why I was so happy when my aunt got it for me a while back, but I've been so busy with other things and finishing other reads that I haven't had the chance to pick it up and start it.  I just might have to today, though.

The writing style is not for everyone, and it's missing much detail that you have to go back and disinter from the vast study Tolkien's son Christopher made of his life's work, but the vision behind it is unparalleled.

The resignation and sadness in his eyes are very touching. The colors describe the emotional mood.

Thank you! Watercolor is so versatile, it's lovely for both fine detail and vague washes. Details are best achieved with the wet-on-dry technique. Good luck with your watercolors! :)

This has a melancholic vibe to it.  Like the character is at peace while her surroundings/reality around her is being destroyed.   Kinda how I feel right now living in the U.S.A.  Very well done piece again!

Thank you! It's like he's finally coming to terms with the fact that he's fought for so long and lost so much over so little. All of Tolkien's major works (LotR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion) are all ultimately about people striving over material possessions and coming to ruin because of it. I can definitely see that being relatable for living in the US (and the world in general).
