Once upon a time, dogs had no wings. They were just like rats, only larger, with longer hair, and happier. They were brightly coloured, had the same six legs as any other animal, and a fabulous waggy tail. But, like rats, they had no wings.
There is a forest near the beach at Swesryos, just where the mudflats meet the tall red rock-spires. One day at the edge of the trees a dog was sitting whimpering. She was a beautifully tall yellow-spotted dog and her sobs and cries were so loud that even the blades of grass turned towards her to listen.
A great sad tree bent down and asked,
