I hope you've had a lovely Christmas and are looking forward to 2019!
2018 has been the toughest year of my life since coming back to the UK in 2006. Going into 2018 I knew that was on the cards and was bracing for a difficult year. And difficult it was! But I knew it was a necessary journey through the dark tunnel to reach the light at the other end.
The worst of 2018 was losing my beloved Baba, our family African Grey who had been with the family since around 1992/3. We had many parrots in Nigeria and he was the one who survived with us through very dark times. Losing him was heartbreaking and I miss him dearly. He was always a comfort to us and part of the family.
Work-wise and financially this year has been a mess! It's been constant up and down, but through it all, I opted to trust that God was in control and leading me somewhere. Though there were times things were overwhelming, I was also able to let my worry go knowing worrying was not going to change anything, and I always felt the better for it.
The best of 2018 was being approached by Dark Horse to inking a 4-issue comic with a major video game franchise (one of my faves no less!) and winning the gig! This was an opportunity I've been waiting years for and so I decided to make certain sacrifices to ensure I wouldn't botch this opportunity up! There was a bumpy ride in issue 2 but it taught me a lot about what I was truly capable of and reinforced some of my personal work ethics.
More and more opportunities came up for inking work and although not all of them got off the ground, the fact that I'm getting more offers is a good sign.
What was also good in 2018 was the progress I made on my comic SH. In the first quarter of the year, I made the decision to put the breaks on the writing so I could review the story and make some fixes to very problematic areas. I took me all year but in very recent weeks I finally finished the outline and we're now ready for the next stage, which is for my co-writer to start on the scriptwriting again. It took a long time but the result is a much better and coherent story. There is still a way to go and some obstacles to overcome but progress is being made and if feels good.
So, 2019 - what will you bring?
For starters, the comic I've been inking for Dark Horse is due to be released very soon and then I can spill the beans and share some of the best inking I've yet done. If you follow me on Instagram
, you would have had sneak peeks at the inking, but I've been incorporating a lot, A LOT of texture, which is very new and different to how I usually ink. This is more apparent once issue 2 hits, so I can't wait to start sharing issue 2 inks once it's released.
I still have a few bumpy months ahead of me but I do believe I'm at the tail end of the tunnel and 2019 is going to be a better year for me. I won't say much more about my plans or expectations but I do look forward to sharing more with you as things progress.
If you've been having a tough time in 2018, I'm there with you. I don't like to go into all the details of what I go through, but I'm always happy to talk if you want to DM me. I hope 2019 will be a better year for you.
And for those who had a great 2018, may it continue in 2019 from strength to strength.
God bless you all - Let's do this!!!
