THE GATEWAY

In Nina Allan's short story "The Gateway" (from her "fractured novel" Stardust, 2013), a time-shift connects a funfair maze in pre-war Germany with a near-future concentration camp. Viewed from above, the infamous "chambers" looked like ordinary farm buildings. What about that inconspicuous old-style house with a suspiciously tall chimney slap bang in the middle of present-day Vienna? I didn't investigate. Picture taken from the corridor of a hotel in the Fünfhaus district with a wide-angle lens – the reason why the foreground and the main subject outside are equally sharp.
