I don't really know if there was a lot people who thought that
I remember when I was a kid I always thought he was a girl but as I grew up and found out he wasin't, I asked if anybody else thought the same when they were kids and most of people agreed that they thought the same thing

his character design in the first gold and silver game was kinda simpler, we weren't given much about him back then, most of ust just knew him in his in game sprite, and with the long hair and long coat, he looked like a girl
in the newer one however it's more obvious that he's a boy
and about Go:
According to an interview with Go's voice actor, he is designed to be a neutral-looking character by appearance, since he was intentionally created with both masc-and femme-coded physical traits, though obviously audience can tell that he is still a boy
