Confession to a Bear
(warning: horror and inferred abused)
Teddy, are you sleeping?
I have to tell someone.
I know you will keep my secret.
We have to be quiet though.
We dont want to wake anyone.
They haunt me, you know,
crazy shadow people scratching at my walls.
Momma says it's all my imagination.
"There's no such thing as shadow people."
She smiles with tight lines around her eyes
and tucks me in.
A kiss upon my brown hair covered head
then she turns out the light and closes the door.
I use to have a night light
but Daddy said I was "too old for that shit."
I don't think Momma told Daddy about the shadow people.
He would have yelled more.
Maybe not yell at all.
That's even worse.
I'm terrified to go to sleep.
I know it.
I don't care what Momma says.
So I curl up as tight as possible,
scrunching closed my eyes,
praying they go away.
Every night they do
in my dreams.
Every night they reach me.
I can feel it
