My Bio

I post ALL of my art here, but this DeviantArt account is mainly a place to feature the rest of the stuff I can't sell on my main website. That said - on to the actual Bio...

Hello, I'm Keith James. I'm a bear* loving, geeky, artist/author, living in Glen Lake MN with my husband & dog. I was raised, and still live, in Minnesota, only leaving for 4 1/2 years to attend The Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio, where I graduated with a BFA majoring in Illustration.

I have a love for superhero comic books and science fiction/fantasy stories, which is how I earn the title of "geek". I even spent a better portion of the years after college doing illustrations based on those loves. Unfortunately, most of it is based on copyrighted material, so I'm not able to sell any of it... but I'm working on changing that. So my main focus these days has been Bears. *Please note, when I say "bear", I'm not talking about an animal. No, for me it means robust &/or tubby, furry, and (almost always) gay men. My bear art can be quite different from the rest of my work. While there is some nudity, I don't think any of it is pornographic. Frankly, if that's what you want, you're better off going somewhere else. But it is definitely created with an adult audience in mind, and some of the images can be suggestive. I have a handful of different series all based around the Bears and that’s what you’ll see dominating my main website thegeekcanpaint.com for now.

I've been involved with art as long as I can remember and knew I'd be working in it since I was a child. My primary medium is gouache paint, followed closely by its better known "cousin", watercolour. I commonly work on hot press watercolour paper, and almost always use coloured pencils to help enhance the paintings. Though my ultimate passion is for painting, I also I do plenty of pencil drawing (especially when I'm creating a completely original image) but I also enjoy scratchboard, and have even been dabbling with sculpture.

So about that novel I wrote... Yes, it's been five (wow) whole years since I released it. Yes, at the time I said there would be an audio version and yes, I still intend to do one. Yes, there’s also a sequel and yes, it is still coming… soon even. But there’s even more now. Kind’a a lot more. It's been building up for some time, but I just couldn’t shake this feeling that my BearArt is never going to do for me what I need it to do - which is become my main source of income. Not by itself anyway. So while the BearArt isn't going away (nor is the Christmas Carol project I just started with my hubby) I’ve decided to switch gears and take on a project I had strongly considered as my main focus when I chose the bear art instead. I’m going to make a graphic novel adaptation of my story via a Patreon. In conjunction with this decision, even though it pains me to do it, but since I only had the one book out so far, I temporarily took it off the market to make some adjustments before

Changes...

Changes Part 1: What's Been Wrong I hate my job. I hate having to wake up to go to a place that has been eating away at my soul for the better part of the last 20 years. There are frustrations with it that would have me seriously considering looking for employment elsewhere, except for one big issue, and this would be a problem wherever I went... it's not art. I've known I wanted to do art for a living since as long as I can remember. And lately I've been feeling like I've wasted my life - because I just haven't. Please don't misunderstand - I'm grateful to have a job and the income it has provided. But it's not what I felt I was put on this planet to do and I don't like what that is doing to me. The discontentment has been bubbling up for some time now - even effecting the art I do for fun. I had tried making an adjustment to how I did art - creating a sort of schedule. And that worked in all the ways it had been intended. But now I need to make a major adjustment to that schedule -

I love your art, obvious skill aside, the amount of love in your portraits is stunning!

Wow - what a lovely compliment! Thank you so much! :)

GET THE HELL OUT OF MY COUNTRY! YOU DISRESPECT THE SOLDIERS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES TO CREATE THIS COUNTRY, YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE HERE!

If you're going to continue painting illustrations and book covers of the "Harry Potter" novels are you going to go all the way up to "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child"?

Image

I'm in the midst of taking a break from illustrating the Potter books for an undetermined length of time. I need to focus on some other stuff. But it is a passion project for me to illustrate all of the Potter books. And if I have the time to do it, yes, I'll be doing "Cursed Child" as well.

OK, I didn't mean right now, I understand it it takes time to paint your illustrations, with all the detail you put into them, I meant some time in the future, and I'll be curious to see your interpretation of the "Cursed Child" in the coming years.

Oh, I know you didn't mean now. I was just saying all that because this break I'm taking from Potter art could mess up my plans some. I might not get to do EVERYTHING I want :)
