The Link System User's Guide by TheFulkrum   The Link System Video Tut. 1 by TheFulkrum The Link System Video Tut. 2.1 by TheFulkrum :thumb135380609: The Link System How Not To by TheFulkrum

The Link System helps increase Deviant’s exposures and finds undiscovered art. That’s it.

If you haven’t heard about the The Link System, you’re at the right spot. If you have, but wish to find out how to improve your results, you’re at the right spot. If you’re bored, welcome!

The Link System is not the same as the ‘Sharing’ offered to us by dA. news.deviantart.com/article/89….
This is exposure only within dA.There are two types: The Link System and The Link Sys PE. They depend on whether you’re a Premium Subscriber or not. Any and every artist on dA can use the System. The differences are minor.

If you have never heard of this at all, I suggest you start off by giving the pdf ‘User’s Manual’ a quick read. It’s in colour and funny, unlike this article. Part 1 is a Video Tutorial which shows Linking in real-time.  Parts 2.1 and 2.2 are more detailed Video Tutorials and show the process step by step. The last video will NOT make sense unless the others have been watched.

Most Deviants wish to share their work. For better or for worse, Pageviews and Favs are the measures used in our community. In the world outside the Internet, most of us would wish that things didn’t depend on money. But for most things, money is the only value.

Link another artist's submission to your own in your artist's comment box. It helps everyone. And art.

It takes a few extra minutes to submit and you can:

1. Increase another Deviant’s exposure
2. Increase your own exposure
3. Find undiscovered art on dA
4. Make potential friends

Example of what a final submitted Link would look like:

:icontracteurrouge:  tracteurrouge submitted:

:thumb134641449:

and Linked it to:

by

:iconduckofdeath:  DuckOfDeath

tracteurrouge has been gracious enough to introduce us to someone else’s work. She has also left a comment on DuckOfDeath’s page, complementing the piece of art and letting the artist know that, he in this case, has been Linked. She provides her own URL. Done! Notice their interactions when you go to their pages. This is all shown and discussed in the Video Tutorials in more depth.

The Link can be to your own work. I’ve seen up to 3 Links in an Artist’s Comment box; 1 to self-promote and the other 2 to help other Deviants. Keep in mind that Links don’t have to be photographs. They can be any form of art on dA. Non Premium-subscribers will not be able to have the actual picture of the other Deviant’s work. But they can still Link using URL’s.

How many times have you come across a piece of work and thought it deserved more than one view and half a fav? When you’re looking for your Link, you’ll come across work like that. And you can give it its due by Linking. There are many articles around dA that showcase works that deserve more attention. Please look at two very prominent monthly series:

1. :iconrocamiadesign: rocamiadesign's

SHAMEFULLY UNDERFAVED Series
now at SHAMEFULLY UNDERFAVED 6

2. :iconthe-avel-fairy: The-Avel-Fairy's

Underappreciated Series
now at Underappreciated XVI

These are great sites to look at and find wonderful work to Link to.

The Link System has caught on and spread quite promptly. It is NOT and NEVER will it be a club. It is just a thought of and offered idea, which is slowly even being promoted and put to use in clubs like SkyAndNatureClub, naturephotographer and HDR-Club. Multiple Deviants are either promoting or Linking already. Everything is described in even more detail in the tutorials. Take 15 minutes of your time to read it and watch them. If you feel it’s a good idea, please help by fav’ing this article and spreading the word in your own ways. You don't have to Link to help. You can feature it. You can mention this Article. You can use the stamp. But it'll only help us most effectively by using it.

It only takes a few extra minutes to submit. :)

FEW HANDY LINKING TIPS:

1. Always make sure you let the person you're Linking know about it. If he/she doesn't know, they'll never know to look at your work!

2. It's not necessary, but a good idea to keep the Linking within the same overall category i.e. photography, traditional art etc. But it's your call of course.

3. You can have more than one thumbnail in your artist comment box if you're a Premium Subscriber. So you can self-promote by thumbnailing one of your own pieces, and then help two other deviants with the other two thumbnails. Again, more in the Video Tutorials.

4. The more you upload and Link, the more prominent the results.

5. Try and be a GOOD Linker. If people start noticing that the Links you provide are always wonderful, they'll always follow them the next time they're looking at your work. So you'll be helping other Deviants even more. 'Wonderful' is in the eye of the beholder of course! ;)

6. HAVE FUN! It's art and fellow artists. All you're doing is helping yourself, them and art on dA. That's it.

KIRIBAN
Would not be complete without this would it? :)

Anyone who catches my 12345 Page View mark gets:

1.3 Month Subscription
2.15 pieces of your work featured in my journal for one week.
3.I'll try and get more stuff, but isn't #1 enough? :) If you want to help with prizes; excellent. You can help by offering to feature the artist too.

What do you do? Same old thing: Print the screen. Submit it and title it, 'The Link System Kiriban'. Put the thumbnail in the Note. If the Subject title is not correct; sorry. If it's a link instead of a thumbnail; sorry. If you need to know how to do any of this, Note me! :)

NOTE: No photographs of inappropriate stuff. Really want me to go through it? Eg. Artistic nudes are fine; their really private parts are not; NO ANIMAL CRUELTY; no severe fetish eg. close-ups of pierced testicles...please just judge the rest, mmm'kay? :)

Give me your comments. Send me nice Notes. Ask any questions (about this). 'Favourite' this and help if you like it. Fake it if you don't.

Enjoy and have a great day! ;)

Wow this has been very helpful! I will defiantly start linking other people works on my submissions. It’s very sad how there are so many great pieces of art and they barley have any page views.

I only wish I could show thumbnails in my submissions… I know people are hesitant to follow links that don’t exactly show what they are.

I'm glad you think it's helpful.

It is true. :( One thing you could do is just post the other deviant's icon next to the url in your comment box. That way people aren't to worried that it will take them outside dA or anything like that.

Hopefully huh? :)

Here's the problem I have with this: This so-called "Link System" could easily lead to abuse and harassment. For example, some incredibly uncouth people might decide to upload a piece of inflation art, then link that image to a picture or pictures of slightly overweight women saying "Hey, check out these other fat bitches!" or something similarly offensive.

Perhaps there should be some kind of proviso that you ASK the artists you're "linking" to if they want their work to be associated with yours before just doing it.

There very well can, and probably are people out there who would do such a demeaning thing. Your concern is completely understandable.

1. If you're not one of them, don't worry about it.

2. If artists mention in their artist comment boxes that their art can be used within dA, then they're giving anyone the right to do so. BUT, you are correct about the abuse. That's where artists can be more succinct about what's allowed. eg. 'My work can be used only within dA. There should be no animal cruelty etc.'
People will still abuse that if they wish. You're right. But this idea is for the majority who wish to use it for the good of other artists, and themselves. Asking the artists is anyone's prerogative. If you choose to try this, but will not do it without asking someone's permission, then excellent. You'll be more at peace.
If someone abuses your work; understand that this idea is not the only thing stopping people from abusing your work in the first place. :) Someone could be doing it as we 'speak'. And it wouldn't have to be this idea that would encourage that type of behaviour.

If I happen to abuse your work by stating something like that about it, who is more likely going to look like an insensitive and "uncouth" person. Me, or you? :)

I do appreciate you stating your opinion.

Obviously you've misunderstood my position.

1) Just because I'm not a person would do something like that, does not mean I have no reason to worry someone might do that to me. I'm more concerned about having my work misrepresented by its association with something or someone by which I might not want it represented.

2) You're correct that if an artist mentions that their work is available for use within dA, or offsite or wherever that it's generally fair game, but what you're missing is that this applies to the use of stock and resources as parts of other artworks. It does not apply to people arbitrarily linking their own work to someone else's without bothering to ask the other artist if they mind being affiliated in this way. That is unfair to the artist who may or may not wish to participate in this little "project" of yours.

3) Let's assume your point of view for a moment on the artists comments regarding use on dA. What then, of the people whose work clearly states in the descriptions (as does my photography, for example) that it is not available for use anywhere by anyone without the artist's express permission? Clearly, this must mean that the artist does not want their work used as part of someone else's art and that they also do not want some random person deciding to represent that artist's work as being affiliated with their own.

If someone abuses my work, which they have and will likely do again, I will find it and I will seek every means of legal retaliation available to me in order to preserve my work and its integrity. I am well aware that art theft on the Big Bad Innarwebz is rampant, and as a result of that awareness I remain constantly vigilant to protect that integrity. I'm not saying I'm well protected from art theft because the only way to be well and truly rid of art theft is not to post your artwork online. What I am saying, though, is that I feel it would be unfair for some random person to link their work to mine without first asking me if I mind that link. More likely than not, I'm going to say yes if I'm asked first but I'd rather have the option to say no just in case the person who wants to link my work to theirs has less-than-noble intentions.

And if you do happen to abuse my work by stating something derogatory and offensive about it (not critique, mind you, but out-and-out name-calling or the like), then you my dear are more likely to look like an insensitive and uncouth person than I would be by protesting that I don't want my art referred to in that way.

This is a suggested idea, not a forced practice in order to abuse others stated wishes. As for you voicing your opinion, I'm glad it's being discussed. Most ideas should be. Hopefully I'll get something out of this.

1. That would be the same if you were for example, featured in someone's journal; someone you may not wish to be associated with.

2. You believe it is unfair to the artist who may or may not wish to partake. That's exactly why you may wish to not practice the idea. And if someone else tried using this and Linked you, you're more than welcome to ask him/her to remove the Link immediately.

3. If it is stated that your work "is not available for use anywhere by anyone without the artist's express permission", then people ought to respect that.

4. "I feel it would be unfair for some random person to link their work to mine without first asking me". Perhaps one more line in your stipulations then. eg. "No Linking w/o permission". Done.

Yes, I would. That was the example yes. That's why I would respect your words in your piece's comment box and not Link to yours. I wouldn't state derogatory things about it either, although that is a freedom I will always have.

Believe in others goodness my friend. :) I hope I wouldn't come across as someone uncouth who Linked to your work. And I hope you never have to deal with anyone uncouth due to this idea. Unfortunately you already have before reading this; your work was abused. I hope it doesn't again. :)

"This is a suggested idea, not a forced practice in order to abuse others stated wishes." The problem with this statement is that it is directly contradictory to itself. By having people "linking" their deviations without asking the artists not involved if they want to be linked, it is indeed a practice "forced" on others.

1) This practice is not the same as a journal feature for the simple reason that it affects search results and pressents the great potential to misrepresent the other artists work as belonging to the person who did the linking. It would be very easy to mistake the thumb in the description of the linked piece for another piece from the linking artist's gallery, especially if the linking artist was unclear in explaining why the thumb is in the description of the piece. The main reason people use thumbs in their descriptions is to link to related works in their own galleries. Journal features are different because they usually say very clearly that they are features, and they do not skew search results.

2) If someone does link me and I don't approve, I thoroughly plan on asking them do just that. The point is that I shouldn't have to pursue it that way. The only time I should have to start firing off cease-and-desists here on dA is in the case of legitimate art theft.

3) You'd think that, wouldn't you? You'd think people would understand that that means NO use. :|

4) I will not place another line in my description to protect myself from your practice of force-linking, as that should not be something I should HAVE to protect myself from. The NO USE thing kind of covers that, I think.

Glad you have so much faith in humanity, but I certainly don't. I've seen too many assholes in this world and on the internet to believe otherwise. As for coming across someone who was abusing this idea of yours, no I haven't. Yet. However, it's blatantly obvious by reading the "about" journal that this has high potential for abuse and that the practice is unfair and misrepresentative for artists not involved.

Perhaps you should consider altering the concept just a little. Perhaps it might be better for all concerned if you had a list of members who were willing to participate and only those willing members were linked to.

The Link System is just about one of the best projects I've come across here on dA. I've been promoting it and I'm glad to see this article. The video tutorials are a real plus for anyone wanting to know how to Link.

I hope you don't mind me adding a link to this article as well as the tutorials in my journal. I hope more people will be made aware of the system, use it and promote it as well.

Thank you for this and I hope you'll submit updates on the progress of the Link System in the future :)

And a kiriban is exciting news, too! Good luck to all :)
