Story (367 words)
The 14 hour drive from Illinois to New York took its toll on the humans a lot harder than it did on Cowboy. The chocolate stallion walked off the float bright eyed neighing to the horses milling around the yard. He called out to a chestnut filly walking past them. The filly had more sense than to respond to his excited calls, walking past him with her head held high ears flicked back.
Natasha led Cowboy into his stall and made sure he had feet before she and Thom went to book into a hotel room and rest. They had a short run two days before the race, Cowboy fought Thom’s pressure on the reins. He had done this racing thing once before now and he had picked up the idea without any issues whatsoever.
On race day Natasha tacked up Cowboy and led him out for Thom. The stallion was quieter than his first race, bouncing on his hind legs as Thom mounted up. Natasha tossed his lead line to a Steward dressed in red on a dark manes gray gelding. Thom tried to settle the palomino stallion but he tossed his head and rose off the ground as they made their way onto the track and down towards the starting gate. Cowboy settled long enough to load into the gate then began to shift and fidget as he grew impatient, wanting to be running already.
It didn’t take long for the other horses to be loaded and in a second the gate sprung open and they were away. Cowboy wasn’t left behind this time, he shot out of the gates and was away, reaching for the rail. Thom held him in a little not wanting to stallion to burn out. No, he felt good. He felt strong. He felt like he was loving this run, burning to be let loose. Thom grinned and ducked his head as the pack moved around them but Cowboy held the rail. The chestnut filly from their arrival, WBS Wise Jewel, and a seal brown mare, WoR Petit Oiseau, came up on his outside. The three of them jostling to gain ground on one another as the race ran on.
