The Glaive at Mizar by thefirstfleet The Glaive at Mizar by thefirstfleet
After a relatively long research into retrofuturistic space stations, I finally re-designed The Glaive, the home base of the Polaris. It's a medium-sized station, between the size of the K-7 and the Vanguard/Watchtower type. Also, the best Doner Kebab in 200 lightyears is made here :D

Polaris and The Glaive designed and modelled by me

I hope that's not asteroid killed Caitian?

I really want to link to a clip of Red Dwarf's Space Weevil scence, but I just can't find it. :(

1 Int. Starbug Galley.

Rimmer enters the kitchen area, where Kryten is delicately slicing a carrot.

Rimmer: Ten o'clock changeover. Anything to report?

Kryten: We're still lagging behind Red Dwarf, sir -- almost twenty-four hours behind now. Other than that, it's been a moderately quiet shift, except for one small shock a couple of hours ago when we noticed an alien invasion fleet off the starboard bow. Thankfully it turned out to be one of Mr Lister's old sneezes that had congealed on the radar screen.

Rimmer: How are we fuel-wise?

Kryten: Unchanged for today, sir. However, the supply situation grows increasingly bleak. We've recycled the water so often, it's beginning to taste like Dutch lager.

Rimmer: We're okay for food, though, aren't we?

Kryten: Confidentially, sir, no. We've no meat, no pulse and hardly any grain. Worse still, the only liquorice allsorts left are those {whorly} little black twisty ones that everybody hates. If that weren't bad enough, space weevils have eaten the last of the corn supply. [Transcriber's note: Whorly is best guess. It looks and sounds like Kryten flubs this line.]

Rimmer: So what's under the grill?

Kryten: Space weevil.

Kryten pulls the pan out from under the grill. Rimmer looks away, disgusted.

Rimmer: You can't serve space weevil, Kryten. I mean, not even Lister with his single remaining tastebud will knowingly sit down and eat insectoid vermin. Well let's face it - with him it's practically cannabalism.

Kryten places the grilled roach on a plate, garnished with fresh vegetables.

Kryten: But it's incredibly nutritious, sir. After all, it is corn fed.

Rimmer: You'll never get him to eat it.

Kryten: Trust me sir. They say the first bite is with the eye. It's all down to presentation.

He sprinkles some grated herbs over the repast, then lifts it up in onehand, waiter-style.

Kryten: Et voila!

Captain: Okay everyone time for a bathroom stop and replenish the snacks.
The crew lets out a cheer as they rush the airlock.
Captain: NO RUNNING! <intercom> Hey chief, fill up the tank and have the windows cleaned.
Chief: <intercom> Will do captain. Premium or regular?
Captain: <intercom> Go with the Premium.  She deserves it.
Captain: Helmsman. I think you left the blinker on.
Helmsman: Oh! sorry captain.
Captain: <shaking head> This is going to be a long trip.

I didn't think Andorians made "real ale", and that doesn't really answer the point about a place where I can buy it on draft.

What other starfleet vessels operate out of the Glaive?

The USS Entente is certainly based at The Glaive, as is the Polaris (although she is not a Starfleet ship). Due to the vicinity of Cait, I think many Caitian ships are also based here.

Great design. It really reminds me of all those 1950's designs for space stations, with multiple rings around a central core, but I can see the design elements of the K-7 and the later designs from the films.

She has a terrific view of those rings, too. (I bet there's a store on it where you can buy souvenir holographic postcards with pictures of the rings, too. Now all it needs are tribbles... )

I appreciate the docking port linking the two; it helps establish the size of the Starbase, something we could only guess at with the K-7.

One question: is the saucer of the Polaris the same size as that of the Enterprise?

I'm glad you like my design choices.

And yes, the Polaris has the same saucer as the Enterprise does.
