Filming the Aquashuttle

It's the year 1970, but a bit different than the way we know it. After a successful write-in campaign, Star Trek is renewed for a fourth season. With an expanded budget thanks to a viewership hooked on advancements of real-life space exploration (Apollo 13's successful moon landing in April and the Venus fly-around mission announced last year helped a lot), all-new effect shots could be made. This included the multi-purpouse Aquashuttle, whose filming was captured in this old photo I managed to dig up from the vaults.

I have to wonder if some of the things we saw in the animated series were originally intended for the live-action series.

Some ideas, I think they were. Roddenberry and the staff really planned for five seasons, one for each of the Five-Year Mission.

Hmm... I knew something was off when you mentioned Apollo 13 landing on the moon. That's the one that had a malfunction and barely made it back. I mean, come on! They made a huge Hollywood block buster movie about it staring Tom Hanks. Really great image though. You had me fooled until I read the posts.

What happened to the shuttle? How did this turn into a cartoon?

This is a CGI image. There was never a physical model of it. The original aquashuttle featured in an animated Star Trek episode only.

That was my goal. I wanted to make this piece as realistic as possible.

Well Done!

I've been noodling with the Aquashuttle's design.

It occurs to me that she should have a fold down ramp or dive platform on her aft end to allow divers to enter and egress easily when she's on the surface.

There also may be a dive hatch on the underside of the ship, for access while the ship's underwater.

I'm working on a shot to showcase the features.

Anyway, glad to see someone else playing with it!

I needed to build it. Gotta love these TAS designs.

You had me going there! This looks real! I was thinking for a moment that they actually built this model for the show, but got canceled before they could use it.
