A question of colonialism by thefirstfleet A question of colonialism by thefirstfleet
Captain Rutherford looked at the beautiful vista through the porthole. Below him, Terra Nova shone like a gem in the darkness. It has been less than a day since Chesapeake arrived to this lost colony, ready to re-establish contact after the findings of Enterprise four months ago. Another mystery solved, another world Humankind could call home. Rutherford couldn't help but smile.
The beep of the intercom pulled him out of his reverie.
"Captain Rutherford to the bridge", came the voice of the tiny speaker of the wall-mounted communicator. It was the first officer, Commander Lilian Telfer.
"I'm coming, Lil", Rutherford said, pushing the transmit button on the communicator, and off he went. The turbolift ride took less than a minute, and he looked over the small, cramped bridge.
"They came out of nowhere, Sir", Telfer said,  nodding toward the main viewscreen. Upon it, the massive bulk of a Vulcan cruiser was becoming bigger by the second.
"The Vulcans?", Rutherford moaned, annoyed, "What are they doing here?"
"Incoming transmission, Captain", van Leuuwen, the tiny Afrikaans comm officer said.
"On screen", Rutherford nodded. The screen blinked to the image of a bony-faced Vulcan man. Rutherford decided to play nice for the time being, "Hello there. What can I do for you?"
"I am Captain Selket of the cruiser T'Manke", the Vulcan said, "I was sent by the High Command to oversee your dealings on this planet."
"Everything's going fine, thank you", Rutherford said with a casual shrug, "We're about to send a shuttle down."
"You do not understand the purpouse of our presence", the Vulcan said without even flinching, "The High Command wants to make sure you treat your colony in a humane way."
"What are you talkin' about?", Rutherford said, trying hard to hide his outrage, "This is an Earth settlement. We have lost contact with them, thought it's been lost with all hands. We're not here to conquer this place."
"You are about to establish contact with a culture that has developed on its own for a generation without any Earth interference", the Vulcan said, "Knowing your species' history, the High Command is concerned about what could unfold here."
"Don't worry, we will treat the Novans far better than how you treat us", Rutherford said, signalling to van Leuuwen to cut communications. As the screen went blank, he couldn't help to think that maybe radicals like Archer had a point. Maybe the Vulcans were the heavy-handed colonial masters they painted Earth to be like...

Neat story. The ENT Intrepid is an underrated ship IMO. I love designs like that.

Even the designers were bewildered when they've learned how much the fans liked this ship :D

When watching Enterprise, I just can't do anything but consider Vulcans being a metaphore of the USA, Earth a metaphore of Europe  and the Andorians being the Russians after WW2 in general and 9/11 in particular.

Thank you!

Vulcan clearly look Imperialistic and Earth try to become autonomous, De Gaulle style.

A good scene, a fun story, and the Vulcans MAY be as bad as Captain Rutherford thnks

I think the scariest aliens in Trek are the Vulcans. If they decided planetary-scale genocide is the logical choice, they'd do it without a second thought.
