When Hanna-Barbera realized the Scooby-Doo formula was starting to get stale... they thought adding a younger pup would be the best way to revive the show...

Next to "What's New", this is what got me interested in Scooby-Doo. And to this day, I am a proud Scrappy-Doo fan and happy to admit it. Besides, it wasn't HIS fault, it was the writers who are to blame!

Well, in that case it's never any characters fault. Villains, bad characters, bad decisions, etc. It's always writers XD

I simply agreed that, yes, it's always the writer's fault. Never the characters.
You know, agreeing with you.
Don't put words in my reply I didn't say! XD

Alright...besides, for everyone whining about how Scrappy allegedly ruined the franchise, I'd bet good money that none of them has ever actually TRIED to rewrite his personality to be more tolerable.

Awesome job! Looks great! I am not a big Scrappy fan, as he is very annoying, but I don't totally get all the hate he gets on the internet, and although having him as a villian is kinda amusing, he would never try to kill Scooby. Does it have something to do with 13 Ghosts? Never seen that series. Can you explain why so many people hate him? Because I don't totally get it, there have been, are and will be more annoying characters than Scrappy...

You said, he gets pretty annoying basically all the time. Also if you watched the show at the time, he was part of that whole annoying attempt at rejuvenating cartoons by imposing new characters on a lot of shows. Usually annoying kid sidekicks. And those usually took the spot of the other classic characters. (just see how from Scooby-Doo & Scrappy-Doo to 13 Ghosts they completely got rid of Fred and Velma!)
They did that to a lot of shows back then...

Right, yeah. I am just amazed how much Scrappy hate is on the internet...He seems to be the most hated character ever at the moment...

Oh, there was plenty of hate back then, long before we even knew about the internet! XD

"He seems to be the most hated character ever at the moment..."
You think so? I rarely see anyone talk about Scooby-Doo online anymore..

Yeah, I was talking to Jerry Beck and he told me most of the hate started from adult fans back when Scrappy was first introduced.

Well, I don't go looking for it, but I come across scrappy hate comments, artwork of him being killed, and even Cartoon Network makes little jokes about him every now and then, (I don't mind the CN jokes), so it seems like he is the most hated character at the moment. I thought a lot of this Scrappy hate stuff on the internet died down and they started on something else, but it seems the internet still hates him. (I kinda feel sorry for him, ya know, even though he is a cartoon character..) I just find it all a little absurd at the moment. I imagine all the hate for him was why they made him a villain in the first Scooby Doo movie.

Believe me, we hated him back then as kids as well! I remember me and my pals at school already making fun of Scrappy and hating on him! It's absolutely not a new thing. The only difference is that some of those kids grew up and work in the industry now (like James Gunn, writer of the Scooby-Doo films).

Ahhh, I get why he made him a villian now! I read that the first Scooby Doo movie was actually going to be like an adult-mock of itself, Shaggy was going to be a stoner, Velma and Daphne were going to be lesbians and Fred was going to be full of himself or really depressed, they hadn't decided yet, and Scrappy was picked to be the villain then, but when they changed their mind, they though Scrappy being the villain was still very funny so they kept it in there. I personally think it was a mistake, but can also see it as funny, it felt more like a parody film than an actual film to me anyway, I think the 2nd was better, and it did better with the fan too.

haha, just kidding.
There's no problem if you like the show.
But for most fans, this is considered one of the worst Scooby Doo iterations, Scrappy was so annoying...

Yep, the first movie! As a long time fan of Scooby-Doo, James Gunn - the writer - had a lot of fun turning the gang against the annoying Scrappy-Doo!

Well, scrappy and his cartoon series are over a decade older than Pan, so I wouldn't exactly say he's "Pan" either...

In the TV show he's not a villain but in the live action movie Velma does mention he has a stunted growth problem and he did end up being the major villain : p

I tried.. really tried to make it through the entire DVD...
Man... his catchphrases get really old really fast.. (plus it's always the same 4-5 one liners, in the same order, through the same scenes each episodes..)

Noooo!  Not Scrappy!  Anything but him!  Well, at least there are still plenty of characters I know who are much worse than him.  Usually I only like annoying characters if they're not so annoying that you want to physically harm them.  I like the annoying characters who are fun to make fun of.

I think Scrappy straddles the line.  He's super annoying, and he needs to be put in his place, but I also think it's hilarious to make fun of him.

Actually didn't mind Scrappy when I was little, but admit this spinoff took Scooby in the wrong direction. Still love 13 Ghosts and the tv movies though.

I feel Scrappy wasn't the worst thing introduced to Scooby's world (rather, I reserve that title for Flim-Flam).

13 Ghosts is only slightly better thanks to the fantastic Vincent Van Ghoul!
