Phoneme Chart by TheEndIsNearUs Phoneme Chart by TheEndIsNearUs
For my own reference, mostly. This is, from my observations and phonetic research, the general outward appearance of the English phonetic alphabet. Feel free to use it for w/e, but credit me if you upload it anywhere.

EDIT: Since this gained like 100x the amount of popularity I expected [i.e. none], I should put a disclaimer that everyone's mouth forms shapes differently, and this is how my own mouth does. If you plan to use this for animation reference like me, also keep in mind the shape and dynamics of the character's mouth in question.

Also, keep accents in mind, notably when it comes to vowels, as the number of them and pronunciation of each word varies depending on where the accent is from. For the record, I have what is known as an "Austin accent," which is much closer to an accent from California than from the rest of Texas [other than perhaps Houston], but it still carries a very slight twang.

EDIT 2: I accidentally put "e" instead of "ɛ" for one the the phonetic symbols, but now that's fixed. Also I should note that there ARE slight differences in the shape for each of these sounds; this is just a general reference.

THANK YOU for assembling this!! It can be utilized for candidates for Speech Therapy as well as for animators! The basic need to communicate can sometimes be lost thru injury, but can be used again with the help this chart! Bravo!!!

This is incredibly useful, as I'm studying animation at the moment at the college I am at and we haven't really covered the basics in mouth movement as well as lip syncing. This will come in handy as practise for when I get to this field. You are a genius, Thanks alot!

I wanna hug you for making this. :happycry: revamp

I started using this reference 2 months ago for help with the mouth-drawings in my senior film...And my lip-synch has improved tenfold ever since. I just tested one scene where I started using it, and the lip-synch was much more readable and accurate. All I have to do is put in some inbetweens...But it was a huge improvement from the scene before, which had a lot of mistakes in the lip-synch. So thank you so much for making this! :iconexcitedlaplz:

I'm sorry, but the character for "e" in "end" is wrong; it should look like a lower-case epsilon. The character "e" in the international phonetic alphabet doesn't exist in American English because we're excessively fond of diphthongs (see the very first row for examples), but it makes the same cut-short "ay' sound as in the French allez. Everything else looks fine, and I know that's not even the point of this chart - it's just that one word-phoneme example that throws me off.

Oh damn, I didn't even notice I made that mistake. You're absolutely right, it should be ɛ. I likely accidentally wrote it as I would in the speech synthesis software that I use rather than the actual phonetic symbol.

Anyways, I'll fix that asap, and thank you for letting me know!

Yeah, I made it precisely because I hadn't found a good lip syncing reference. It's rather simplified, but I think it gives a good general idea.
