In my mind at least, this was not the breaking point of their relationship. I imagine that they probably made up afterwards and continued dating long-distance.
However this breach of trust was definitely the first large "crack" in their relationship.
Ultimately their relationship does end.

Spitfire loved him so much, but Pierson just couldn't love her back the same way. There entire lives, Spitfire had been the one initiating everything.
She dragged him around as a child, she began their romantic relationship, and she assumed that Pierson's attitude of passive acceptance meant that he was happy. When in reality, he wasn't.
Pierson loved Spitfire, just not in the same way that she loved him.

It's like reading my life's story, except that in the end, on my side, "Pierson" (read "I") was more involved in keeping the relationship after "Spitfire" (read "my wife") had given up... Because having a kid changes everything. *hangs head* and now I'll go throw myself a bit of a pity party. anyone want some ice cream? Come along and share your life stories. Misery loves company after all.
