You'd think it'd be easier to hug people with eight arms.

As much as they poke around in the conversation, that old disconnect between feeling and brain kicks in
leaving me to watch and analyze every movement of yours and of mine
hoping desperately for some familiar pattern to suction myself to.

And it's tough trying to make friends with a face like this.

They always say I look alien, perhaps fearsome, but behind the unblinking eyes
I'm just a spineless old softie with two hearts too many,
none of which do that great of a job anyways.

I still don't understand how parrots talk so fluently through a beak; I can't.

It's too sharp and embarrassing and I keep it hidden away if I don't know you well enough
because the urge to swim off in a cloud of my own ink is just too strong
(unless you're a crab I guess, but that's dinner.)

But worst of it is trying to get to know folks on the shoreline.

I can come up, but not for very long
and what good is surfacing when the entire time
half of me just wants to crawl back under my rock?
To all the octopuses out there on the internet.

Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, I never realised that I was an octopus. My fascination with them and tentacles now make sense - because, for the most part, I am one. I make my skin change colors, too, blending into the background because I'm afraid to show my natural hue. It's all so true - sans, perhaps, that when I find someone who doesn't mind the tentacles and beak and strange, otherworldliness, they can't get me to close my beak.

It really strikes home.

Glad to hear the analogy holds true! :)

This is a very interesting analogy, and it works really well. (not much else to say, other than it is pleasant to read)

A bridgebuilder and an octopus do not make for likely allies, as far as given human narrative self-envisionings go. (Which is a crying shame indeed)

It really is a vivid depiction of a personality.

Thanks!  The possible analogy hit me pretty hard yesterday, so I thought it'd be best to take a swing at it.  Good to hear it had the intended effect!

lesieur.deviantart.com/art/A-M… struck me nearly a week back. Alas, noble octo-Buggy, I don't know how to work with you nearly as well as I would like. ;_;

That's not half bad, and quite interesting.

Not sure I've got any advice for you that you haven't heard before but you know; that's the nature of the beast.  Perhaps the bridge builder should relax his efforts a bit and focus on getting to know the other islanders though simple communication.  There's a limited amount of resources on each island I'm sure, and when bridge building is made into a job instead of a fun pass time, it takes a lot out of you.

This is sound advice, m'lady. And it ought be a fun pass time, ideally, neh? Enough to neither want to ink, nor overexert. Maybe we'll both find a happy balance sometime. :) We can hope anyway, right?

you already know from steam how much I like this.
But commenting again because this really hit me in the gut.

In a good way. Emotional, but good.
