These pigeons are known for making a beating and whistling sound as they take off. It is believed the reason for this is to draw the attention of predators as they fly away as well as a way to warn other pigeons of potential dangers. Of the two crested pigeons in Australia that have an erect crest the crested pigeon is the largest. Both the males and females of this bird species have the same characteristics so it is impossible to tell if they are female or male with the human eye.
