Ode to Theatre Tech by TheArcher777 Ode to Theatre Tech by TheArcher777
Sharpies, caffiene and lighting equipment; Ah the life of a Techie!

This was taken during tech weekend for FDU's performance of Cabaret written during the Golden Age of the Musical by the famous Kander and Ebb. This shot I feel captures the essance of technical theatre work; I sat behind that light board for almost two days straight while we set things up.

The two (unknowing) techie subjects in the background are Erica (left) our Set Designer and Audrey L. (right) our Master Electrician.

My only wish was that the people who developed my film had better scanners.....

Camera: Nikon FG
Film: 400 Kodak
Taken at Dreyfuss Theatre, FDU Campus

perhaps I'm showing my age (I went to HS in the "70s) but coffee is the universal caffiene fix and the paper cup in the roll of gaff is ubiquitous...

I LOVE this. The theater at the high school I formerly went to had this same lightboard...ah, the memories. And perfect composition, with the coke and the primer and the lamp. This is a brilliant photo.

This is fantastic! Brings back so many awesome memories. That was the lightboard we used too. (Well, I was the stage manager actually, so I only used it on occasion if something crazy happened. ;)) Ahh theatre, how I miss it.

I'm assuming this picture was taken very late at night. : ) I am not looking forward to Tech next week...soon I can sleep...and yet there is still so much set to be built, much less painted...

I've just started working with the lights at the high school I go to. It's kinda fun. We're not very professional and such, so we don't have Tech Week (I would like to, but what does my opinion matter?). We have a "Tech Day" type thing where we come in and work our asses of on the Saturday before show. I applaud anyone who can actually make it through an actual Tech Week.
When I did the lights for the first time I had my gummy worms, Mountain Dew, and a script. My space was much more cluttered, too! :D

beautiful picture that captures the life of a techie perfectly! I've spent sooooo many hours up in the booth I think I could list off the entire inventory even in the middle of the summer and then tell you exactly where to find each thing!

Oh the memories of visiting my light techies in the light booth.
Your picture has touched me on an emotional level. I may not be a light techie(how I wish I were), but our most valuable member is about to depart from high school to continue his training in Cincinnati.

Now I MUST go look at your gallery to see your work!
And hey, I believe we use that board at school! =D

Very nice! I'm currently gearing up for my first show as a light board techie, and I find I like it a lot better than the general chaos that is Backstage. =) Beautiful photo, it captured the spirit exactly.

ooooh! found this doing a search for "theatre". stage manager here, although i've dabbled in light & sound design, and feel totally at home at a light board, or anywhere in a theatre for that matter. so glad i found fellow techies on dA! i knew you guys were here somewhere.
love it!

SWEET. Is that an ETC Express 48/96? Great board. You definitely need more coke. We're opening with South Pacific tomorrow. I'm board op. Sweet. I live to be a techie.

Ummm, it maybe? I'm just an actor in techie's clothing so I don't know. But I do know I like that lightboard right there! My high school did South Pacific the year after I graduated. It's a pretty good show from what I hear. Hope you had a great run of your show!! Yay for techs! They make the theatre go 'round!

Aaahhh I've ran that ETC console before... It was, erm, okay... I'd still MUCH rather run a Strand. aahh, then agian I haven't touched a LX console for a while *shakes fist*.

Ohhh Sharpies, Coke, Coffee, and Gear. The life I love, and yet can't currently live lol. (Lost my last tech Job when the PM diden't like me and cast some falsities and exagerations around until I got fired).

I salute your ode to the Theatre Techs! :salute:

Cheers,
Steve (Dion.)

Meah I'm working as an electrical apprentice, not exactly theatre, but it's constant work lol. I'll get back into theatre when I have more money and thus can move to where there is more work.

Cheers.

I love this picture..it definately does capture the life of a techie. I'm a light proffesional in the making ;-;

I'm in high school still but I can run our light board like the back of my hand (which made no sense, but you know what I'm going for). What kind of a board is that? We own a Strand board from the 90's. It's pretty ghetto sometimes but at least it gets the job done. :D

Oooh, light professional in the making, eh? Lighting Design or electrician work?

As for the kind of board that is...pft. I can't tell you. ~sOamazinghere called it an ETC board so I'll say that. Unfortunately the actor still hasn't learned the names of the lightning equipment. Its a pretty badass light board though. I love having everything programed in to the computer so I just have to hit the GO button during the performance. Except for the train lights. And you can't see it here, but there were lights around the proscenium that had a chance sequence. Those two had their own special sub-masters so I could control them separately. We also have a student run theatre group on campus that I run lights for too. They have this itty bitty tiny ass light board where you have to control every single dimmer by hand. Luckily they only use like 4 channels.
