Study

In my headcanon, Sombra was a unicorn who was extremely skilled in magic. He was Luna's coltfriend, and hung out with her, her father (in the beginning, when he was around), and Discord. He started the groundbreaking study of using gemstones- especially crystals- to enhance magical ability. Most of what was around during his time was zebra lore and textbooks on magic theory. He'd stay up late, obsessing over his work. (He's not yet evil, just very into his work.)
