A super special thanks to DappledSun for giving me a sketch of Garen to work with this time :'D

Character Basics

[Name] Garen

"My father once said that he'd named me after someone he looked up to when he was younger.  And sometimes, I have to wonder... would someone like me have made my namesake proud?  ... I sure hope so."

((note: I really don't care how you pronounce Garen.  While the correct way is GARE-ehn, I tend to go with GAHr-ren on impulse, while other members have pronounced his name in various other ways.  It honestly doesn't matter much to me |D Garen himself doesn't care much either when other felines say his name oddly.  He just chalks it up to having a hard name to get right. ))

Personality: Traits And Character Growth

(from Apprenticeship)

[Complacent] (this trait was later replaced by "Patient and Hesistant") Garen's always been someone who's pretty much a-okay with waiting for the right moments to speak or act, and patiently working things through with others, but let it be known that complacency isn't always a good thing.  On one paw, you could be hyperventilating and the snow-lynx would sit there quietly with a shyly reassuring smile as he waited for you to calm down and tell him what got you so upset in the first place.  On the other... Garen doesn't always have the nerve to seek for answers he wants or might even deserve, instead believing that the answers will come to him when-- and if-- it's time for them to.  Maybe if he'd been more outspoken, he could have actually asked his father who his mother was... instead of only finding out who she was so much later in life.

[Cautious] (this trait was later replaced by "Cautious and Thorough")Garen's a highly careful cat when it comes to just about everything.  It's important for him to think things through and come up with the best plan of action he can before jumping into any given situation; hunting down prey, taking on an enemy, fishing for... fish... hell, even something as simple as building up the nerve to talk to someone intimidating, you name it.  In his younger apprentice days he was actually somewhat overbearing with his worrying; pestering the hunting patrol or company he was with if they really knew what they were doing.  Not because he was judgmental, mind you.  He was just that much of a worry-wart.  Nowadays though, his careful thinking isn't quite as frustrating or annoying to his companions.  For starters, he's a whole lot nicer now when it comes to asking questions and proposing ideas.

[Thoughtful]  (trait was later revised to match the character's newly gained maturity) "Why I asked if you wanted to walk with me?  Well, you... you looked upset.  Was all."  Beneath that introverted shell lies a feline who thinks a lot about other cats and , and really cares about finding the best way to cheer his friends up.  He cares more than you may think.

[Loyal] Garen is extremely loyal to Fire Empire and would go to great lengths for its sake; after all, it's the only family he has.

[Melancholy]  "Oh I was just... thinking... Really.  I-It's nothing."  Garen's thoughts have a tendency to go bittersweet on him; thinking about the life he has now, and wishing that lost friends and loved ones could have been here to enjoy it with the snow-lynx.

[Uneasy] Although he doesn't express it much, it isn't difficult to make poor Garen nervous about things, a trait of his that only got worse after losing his father.  He worries about making mistakes.  He's worried about not being able to fix those mistakes.  He worries about being good enough for his empire.  He worries about being a good example to his empire.  He worries about his friends and family.  He worries about losing his friends and family.  These things will always be a subconscious little gnat in the back of his mind and his heart.

[Responsible] Self explanatory. |D

[Quirk: Sleepy Look] Garen has a tendency to look rather... bored, or even tired as he goes about his day, no matter how much sleep he got or how engaging the activity at hand could be.  For some reason it was just a default expression of his that never quite left, even when he grew out of his cub moons.  It can be a bit misleading during hunting patrols and the like-- felines often find themselves wondering if he wanted to be there in the first place-- but in reality the snow lynx is more alert and aware of his surroundings than one might think.  And to be honest, he likes going on patrols.  He can get a little antsy without a nice walk to stretch his limbs now and then.

[Quirk: You Poor Naive Child] Want to startle Garen out of his sleepy look?  Tell him the lake just turned purple, or that someone drew a disrespectful face on Andromeda's den, that you're dying of a bird illness, or that the tip of his tail just burst into flames, and the poor snow lynx will nearly have a heart-attack before he even begins to doubt you.  It takes a moment or two for him to calm down, and even then, he'll probably ask you and make sure that you're not dying of some strange bird-contracted virus.  He's... the kind of feline that friends would enjoy playing pranks on.

Gladiator

Red Square Bullet [Patient and Hesitant] Garen would make an ideal mentor when it comes to his temperament.  Being a feline of much patience, he's pretty much a-okay with seeing things through at a slow and steady pace; whether that means waiting for the right moments to voice his concerns, gently working things out with other felines, or teaching a struggling apprentice how to hunt birds without making noise.  However, this trait of his can also sometimes slip into a rather troublesome flaw of his; complacency.  On one hand, Garen may be good at giving felines the time they need to understand or open up, but on the other... the snow lynx hasn't always had the nerve to express how he felt about something, or seek for answers he may want or even desperately need... instead settling to live without them and believing that the answers will come to him when-- and if-- it's time for them to.  That or stay quiet until he can stand it no longer and finally speak up, only to realize it's too late by then.  He made that mistake, once, when he was too afraid to ask his father or Andromeda about his family outside of Fire Empire, only finding out about them a whole year later.  He won't make that same kind of mistake again... or at least, he'll try not to.

Red Square Bullet [Cautious and Thorough] Garen is someone who values strategy above brute force, and careful preparation for what lies ahead.  Sure, no one can ever expect anything to go as planned.  Not the battle you're in, the day you've woken up to, even life itself... he knows that, well.  But that doesn't mean one should be unprepared.  He firmly believes that it's better to not run headfirst into any scenario without having a basic plan or idea to go by, along with some kind of back-up plan in case the first one somehow screws up horribly (hey, it happens).  You should go into something knowing that anything could happen, and mentally preparing yourself to remain strong and focused, no matter what the moment brings.  One could say he inherited this decent sense of strategy from his father, but with every strength's light, there's always a weakness in its shadow.  There are still times now and then when he worries a little too much about what could happen and will just end up painfully over-thinking it until someone (un)lovingly tells him to snap out of it.

Red Square Bullet [Thoughtful]  "Hey, uh... why don't we... take a walk to the creek, get away from all this noise?"  Garen cares quite a lot about the felines around him.  It doesn't take much for him to consider you a friend, and if he can tell something is wrong, he'll do anything to help out. The snow lynx also hates offending others or stepping on anyone's toes, and as a result tends to choose his words carefully.  That or hastily apologize the moment his rambling words hit a sore spot with the feline he's speaking with.

Red Square Bullet [Melancholy]  "Oh I was just... thinking... Sorry.  I guess my mind ran off on me."  Garen's thoughts have a tendency to go bittersweet on him; thinking about the life he has now, and wishing that lost friends and loved ones could have been here to enjoy it with the snow-lynx.

Red Square Bullet [Uneasy] Although he doesn't express it much, it isn't difficult to make poor Garen nervous about things, a trait of his that only got worse after losing his father.

Red Square Bullet [Responsible] Self explanatory. |D

Red Square Bullet [Loyal] Garen is extremely loyal to Fire Empire and would go to great lengths for its sake; after all, it's the only family he has.  However, this same sense of loyalty and responsibility also applies to his immediate family in Ice Empire, which can-- and has-- caused issues now and then.

Red Square Bullet [Quirk: Gullible] Tell him the lake just turned purple, or that someone drew a disrespectful face on Andromeda's den, that you're dying of a bird illness, or that the tip of his tail just burst into flames, and the poor snow lynx will nearly have a heart-attack before he even begins to doubt you.  It takes a moment or two for him to calm down, and even then, he'll probably ask you and make sure that you're not dying of some strange bird-contracted virus.  He's the kind of feline friends would enjoy playing pranks on, although he's gotten a little better with this since he got through his apprentice moons.

[Flaws]  Garen's one berserk button is talking about his father in a negative way.  Things get emotionally heated pretty fast when that happens.  He understands that it was Soren's mercy that ultimately got him killed, but doesn't understand why anyone should be critical of someone who already paid the highest price for their mistakes; especially when that someone was a feline he loved dearly.

Backstory

I went into this adoption understanding that my character may not be taken kindly by everyone right away. After all, a lot of people loved KaiserTiger 's interpretation of Nedria and Soren's third cub (including me), and I knew that this "Ryusei Replacement" probably wouldn't sit well with at least a few of you.  It is because of this that I put a lot of time and care into this character, creating a personality and history for him to better explain why he was previously so inactive/absent in Fire Empire's story as a whole, and to assure those who weren't happy about the change in ownership that I do legitimately care about Garen, and hope to make him a more interactive face in his empire than his former incarnation was.  Listed below are the basic notes of his past, why he barely socialized with his empire-mates beforehand, and how he began finally opening up to them later on.

:bulletorange: Garen is the son of the late Fire Empire leader Soren, and the retired Ice Empire leader, Nedria.  Soren never had the chance to tell him who exactly his mother was, however.

:bulletorange: Garen was extremely close to Soren and Andromeda in his cubhood, to the point where he began calling Andromeda 'Mom' not long after he started talking.  She was there for him just like the other den mothers were there for their own cubs, so it made sense that she must be his mother.  Who else could she be?

:bulletorange: He wasn't exactly the most expressive cub, never quite knowing how to tell others why he was upset about something or that he was even upset at all.  When he was feeling down or unhappy, he would usually just wordlessly lie next to Soren or Andromeda and bury his face in their fur, finding comfort in their presence alone.  He was very lucky to have parents who somehow understood his awkward nature and somehow always knew how to make him feel better-- be that returning a silent gesture of affection or telling him something kind and reassuring.

:bulletorange: Unfortunately, as time went on, the little cub eventually learned of his origins and how he came to be in Fire Empire.  Soren still had his duties as a leader, as did Andromeda with her own position; which was how Garen ended up going to other grown-ups to ask about where he came from, as some curious children might do.  He was confused to hear that he hadn't been born in the nursery like say, Kairi's cubs had. In fact, no one even knew about him until Soren brought him home, one day, calling him his son.  When Garen asked about Andromeda, he was only told that she'd looked after him ever since... and if anyone had to be his mother, it had to be her.  But something about that answer just didn't sit right with him... why didn't his parents want anyone to know about him?

:bulletorange: This new revelation was what ultimately planted the first seeds of uncertainty into the snow lynx's mind, and he barely had time to act on it before Andromeda suddenly departed from the Empire, one day.  She'd left in search of something important, apparently.  But that didn't matter.  What mattered was that she'd left him.  Garen's inner turmoil soon festered into a complicated mess of insecurities-- whether or not Andromeda really was his mother, why she never said she was his mother until other cats started saying so, if she even really loved him if she didn't want anyone to know about him at first, if maybe he'd just been found and no one wanted to say anything, if she wasn't his mom then who was and why did no one talk about her, if this hypothetical mysterious mom had done something wrong and that was why no one talked about her, if his dad was even his dad-- ... insecurities that soured him into a very introverted, shut-off and standoff-ish cub for a while.  He didn't know how else to handle it, and for a long time Soren and Sohnii were the only cats who could still get through to him.

:bulletorange: Garen had to deal with his "mother's" absence for about four months, give or take.  He was around 4 moons old when she left, and about 8 moons old when she (thankfully) returned.

:bulletorange: By the time Andromeda returned to Fire Empire, the snow lynx was relieved and overjoyed to have her back, and especially thankful to know that she had missed him, too... but the things he'd learned and worried about for so long were eating at him, and he could take it no longer.  He had to know for sure.  He had to know for sure if Soren and Andromeda were who they said they were.  When he finally nervously... and somewhat painfully, asked Soren about this, the leader stumbled on his words and hesitated for a few minutes before reluctantly admitting that while he was Garen's father, Andromeda wasn't really his mother (nor was she the "mother" who'd given him the caribou necklace).  But he was quick to reassure Garen that his real mother was a kind feline, that 'Andro' still loved him like her own son, and that nothing would change between the three of them.  Nothing.  Garen knew right then and there that he wanted to let go of all of this anxiety and anger.  Soren and Andromeda were always going to be his parents no matter what, and he loved them.  That was all that mattered.  And he was sure to let them both know that (to Soren and Andro's relief.)

:bulletorange: Soren was declared dead the next day.

:bulletorange: Soren's death was utterly crippling to the snow-lynx.  Losing his father-- his hero, his rolemodel, his pillar of strength-- left a gaping hole in his life that he had no idea how to deal with.  Grief-stricken and lost, he closed off from the rest of his empire-mates after that.  Andromeda was the only one who could reach him.  And it was like that for a long time.

:bulletorange: Garen's shut-off period went on for quite a few moons (to be honest, depression is probably a more fitting word for the state of mind that he was in).  But even in his grief, the kind and sympathetic words of his empire-mates didn't go ignored.  Though he scarcely ever showed any response to their attempts to comfort him, he remembered every word they had said, and clung to them like lifelines as he struggled to adjust to a life without Soren.  He was told time and again by both Andromeda and the others how wonderful of a leader his father had been.  How brave he was, smart, strong... How he was so devoted to his Empire that he had a way of making everyone feel like they were family.  How he had loved Fire Empire with every fiber of his being.  How he was seen as a hero by so many of them, and would always be.

:bulletorange: At about 1 year and 2 months of age, Garen finally began breaking out of his period of silence.  Moved overtime by the things his empire-mates had said about Soren, the snow lynx started wondering what his father would have thought about him-- closing himself off from the empire he had loved so much.  It was this guilty thought, as well as Andromeda's own admirable strength despite the loss they shared, that inspired Garen to slowly start making an effort to talk to others again.  He felt like he owed it to his father's memory to open up a little to the big family he had left behind.  It was a slow and awkward process, but he pushed on anyway.  He wanted to get to know his home.  He wanted to know who his family-- both blood and empire-- was.  He wanted to try and make some kind of a difference.  And that's how he started to be a more active character in EBC.

Extra Information

:bulletorange: Like his father, Garen has a crook in his nose; although it's not quite as prominent as Soren's was.  His face is also framed by a lynx's typical 'cheek fluff' as well as tufts on his ears, despite the fact that the ears themselves are round like a snow leopard's.

:bulletorange: Garen's skeletal structure was influenced by both his parents' genetics very equally.  He's not quite a snow leopard in his build, nor is he quite a lynx.  You may interpret that however you may like when drawing him, as I'm not a nitpicky person when it comes to those things.

:bulletorange: Garen cares a lot about Nedria, even if he still considers Andromeda his 'real' mother.

:bulletorange: Soren and Nedria's relationship was kept very secret in rp.  If neither of these characters ever told yours about their relationship, please don't act like your character knows anything about it!  This relationship has since been exposed by the Bounty Hunter, Orcus.  Point is no longer relevant.

:bulletorange: Garen may not look it, but he's an enthusiastic storyteller.  He loved hearing the tales of the Empire Gods from his cub days, but as an adult he enjoys sharing that lore with other cubs and can be seen telling stories by the nursery, now and then.  Cub characters are free to use him in training or assignment pictures; or just for fun.
