Tokoween 2018: Costume Contest
Fall had settled over Tokotna and its inhabitants were preparing for another long and dark winter. And while people already missed the longer days of summer there was also a celebration of the autumn season to look forward to. As the leaves began to change color and fall, and the days grew colder and shorter the people and Tokotas alike grew excited, every year around this time the towns and cities would have festivals and carnivals to celebrate the passed year and to prepare for the approaching. It was a time of merriment, good food, music, friends, and most of all costumes.
All throughout Tokotna people dressed in colorful and creative costumes, some scary and others cute, all of them creative in their own way, and Rorin and his companions were no different, even if Rorin didn’t always understand the references people were making with their costumes he and Orion had always enjoyed it, and now it was Artemis’ first autumn carnival as well.
Rorin had put their costumes toge

WM110: Taming Attempt #11
The small party finished their meal and relaxed in the late summer sun, sitting around their small fire on the bluff north of Pilitak. Occasionally the wind would pick up and the peak would be buffeted for a few seconds before the winds calmed again. On the other side of the bluff the puffins had returned to their nests after the chaos the Tokotas had caused to retrieve their lunch. Every so often a few of the birds would flutter off from their nests and out to the dark sea to the east, only to return with their colorful beaks filled with fish to share with their mates and their young.
Rorin, after finishing his food, was resting against Orion’s flank, looking out over the ocean, his arms crossed behind his head. Orion was curled around Rorin as he rested under his human companion. Kangee was sitting off to Rorin’s right near the fire. He was cleaning the remains of his meal from his paws, and watching his eagle as it flew and glided on the strong winds above them. Beside K

While Kangee and Höðr raided the nests in the chaos Orion was causing Rorin decided to make himself useful. He started walking back down the slope of the bluff to forage. The thick and hardy tundra grasses that covered the majority of the landscape were occasionally spotted with groups of trees or shrubs and bushes. Rorin was mainly looking for rocks to make a fire ring in hopes that the Tokotas didn’t eat everything they caught, but he was pretty sure he’d seen a few edible plants as well.
Rorin quickly found the bushes and was rewarded. The branches didn’t have broadleaves, they were closer to spruce or pine needles, but instead of pinecones Rorin found bunches of deep blue berries hidden amongst the needles, Juniper berries, Rorin thought happily, These will go nicely with the birds, especially if they’re cooked together. Rorin gathered as many as he could from the bush, putting them in one of the small pouches he carried. Once he had

Rorin woke up in his room in the inn, and looking out the window was met by the familiar sight of fog blanketing the small, northern village. He dressed, grabbed a bundle of firewood and met Orion and Kangee outside the inn, inside the stable where a few other Tokotas were being housed. He buckled Orion’s harness onto his back and strapped the bundle onto the harness. Kangee watched and when they were ready he joined them, and the trio set out of town to meet Höðr. As they walked through the small town the fog began to melt away with the rising sun, allowing them to see more of the brightly colored homes the town was known for as well as the southern bluff that acted as a natural barrier for the town.
As the group continued south along the dark sand and gravel beach, Orion led the way, with Rorin closely behind, and Kangee picking up the rear. As they travelled further south and they approached Walrus Beach they weren’t met with the sound of the walrus herd. Rorin

The idea of a new, more fitting name for the Dire vexed Rorin. Try as he might no name came to him that suited the massive Tokota that he had begun to befriend over the past few weeks. There wasn’t a name in the stars for the Dire as there had been for Orion and ancient human religions were giving him nothing either. He spent much of the next few early mornings and late nights making notes in his journal and scribbling them out, he wished now that we was back home in the Aqtuquaq with his many books and star charts, but he wasn’t, he was stuck in Pilitak. After another night of fruitless thought Rorin decided to sleep on it, Perhaps the answers are in my dreams.
Rorin was right, as it had once before the name came in a dream, or perhaps a memory from his childhood. The dream was dark, and silent, Rorin looked out and saw nothing, and for a moment he felt fear begin to creep up his back, its cold fingers drifting up his spine, but then it changed.

The group sat there, on the rocky shore south of Coastal Pilitak, enjoying the warmth of their small fire, still enveloped in the fog that had blanketed the northern coast of Tokotna for the better part of the day as winds from warmer territories met the cold northern ocean. Rorin finished his fish, a few times giving a morsel to Ningen who still lay beside him on his right, basking in the warmth and smells of his first campfire. On Rorin’s right Orion was similarly sprawled out curling around the small pit Rorin had dug to house the fire, his massive head now resting on the man’s lap as he quietly cleaned the bones from the fish. On the other side of the pit, Kangere was sitting, staring out over the sea though he couldn’t see it through the fog, occasionally his eagle would appear out of the fog, flying just within eyesight before disappearing again in the fog.
When the fish was gone and Orion had cleaned and eaten the bones he wanted Rorin was sure the Dire would l

Kangee and Ningen returned to the basket to the sounds of Rorin and Orion play fighting as best as a human and Tokota could. Kangee was more than used to the sight and the sounds that accompanied his strange companions, but Ningen had a hard enough time understanding the two separately, and hearing the two carrying on confused him and put him on edge. Kangee could feel the blind Dire beside him stiffen as they heard Orion growl and bark excitedly, along with Rorin’s bellowing laughter. As the play got a little rougher, and the pair began to kick up the gravel and sand that covered the shore Ningen froze, unsure if he should really be getting any closer to what sounded like a fight.
Kangee brushed against his side calmly, and licked the larger Tokotas muzzle trying to calm him. Ningen’s ears twitched with every sound, and his nostrils flared trying to comprehend what he was hearing but unable to see, all the while his tail swished nervously behind him. Realizing he could do

Rorin turned from the Dire next to him to his companions, both seemed to like the idea fishing more than sitting on the beach for another day. Ningen looked his chops, removing the few fish scales that clung to his white fur. He lifted his head high and point his nose inland, taking a few deep breaths, “They said that the winds have been coming off the sea for most of the night,” Rorin said, the Dire’s ears flicked in his direction but still he stared inland, “They said the fog will probably being hanging around all day, if it doesn’t burn off at noon.” Rorin looked off to their left, over the sea to where the sun was rising, “It isn’t too high yet, should be a few hours still.” he turned to the Dire, “Want to say a while? We might have better odds if we’re all trying.”
The Dire’s nose twitched, and his ears shook, sending a few stray water droplets in all directions, his cloudy eyes bore holes through Rorin.

Rorin sat back down near his companions, though he continued to stare at the Dire that had decided to join them. Beside him, Orion went back to eating as well, unaffected by the events that had unfolded before him, Kangee was however not so easily swayed. While Rorin stared at Ningen in disbelief Kangee’s stare carried more weight with it, and even though he soon continued to eat it was clear he wasn’t entirely comfortable around the massive creature. When the Dire had finished his fish he stood back up, and Kangee shifted instinctually, ready to defend if need be. “There is more to be had if you’d like.” Rorin said casually, raising a hand to calm Kangee. When he heard that Orion stood up and padded over to the basket.
Kangee and Rorin both were unsure of what to do, any sudden sounds could set the Dire off, making him think he was under attack and then the whole expedition would be over. So in the end both didn’t move, and Orion simply walked over

WM110: Taming Attempt #3
After the second meeting Rorin went back to town with Orion and Kangee. He was excited, it had been too long since he had a chance to interact with a wild Tokota, and longer still since his last interactions with a wild Dire. as they walked Rorin spoke to his companions, “We’ll try to make this a routine, see if we can’t get the big guy used to us being around him, and if we can make our presence a positive that will be even better.”
Unfortunately, Ningen had other plans. Try as they might Rorin and his companions didn’t see hide nor hair of the white Dire for nearly a week, it was as if he disappeared, everyday that sat on the beach near the walrus and a few times everyday the fog would roll in but still Ningen remained a no show. In his frustration Rorin went back to the well hoping to learn more about his quarry, only to find that while the people of Pilitak wanted to help they knew very little about Ningen and Dire Tokotas in general. The only real pie

Rorin spent the next few days talking with people in Pilitak about Ningen. It seemed like no one was sure how long he’d lived around the town but most people agreed that they’d started to notice him more recently, especially since the walrus had arrived. They said that he had been grabbing one every week or so, but no one was sure what else he was eating considering how sparse the land was this far north. Rorin, along with Kangee and Orion set out to find out where a Dire of that size could be hiding to maintain such a mysterious persona.
The warning on the tag had been right, whether they meant it to be or not, Ningen seemed to come and go with the fog, and with a coat as light as his he was nearly invisible in it which worked to his advantage. Rorin would occasionally catch glimpses of the Dire as he slunk back into the fog after attempting to grab a walrus. After watching him work Rorin was sure the Dire was in fact blind which only made the fact he was surviving alone a

Rorin and Orion had travelled far north to offer aid to the coastal village of Pilitak where after a long and unusually warm summer flooding had wreaked havoc on the small, isolated population. Rorin and Orion were also accompanied by Kangee. Rorin had left Artemis with Kangee’s handler because she was still so young, not to mention she was too small, and unexperienced to be much help. The trio had worked in the coastal village for several weeks helping to dig new drain trenches and unclog old ones, as well as rebuild the sea walls to several homes and docks, but now that all the work was done they were recuperating before the long trek back home.
The morning air was cool and smelled of the sea, and although he couldn’t see much past the brightly colored houses across the narrow road from him, Rorin could hear the waves crashing against the bluffs and the barks of the walruses and their young on the rocky beach farther down the coast. Every morning was the same in Pilitak, a

Weekly Quest: Dam(n) these Floods!
The flooding had started late last week. At first the mountain rivers were just moving a little faster, carrying the extra water within their normal boundaries, but now, after several days of intense heat, at least for Tokotna, the rivers had swelled and were overflowing, flooding the lower territories throughout Tokotna. For many this meant digging trenches or hauling sandbags to build makeshift levies and barriers to keep the water at bay. Rorin and Orion were lucky, at least that’s what they were told. Rorin had picked his spot in the Aqtuquaq carefully, and it was paying off, until now the water hadn’t bothered them but now it was causing trouble for the people of the nearby town. Rorin decided to take a more proactive approach to solving the flooding problems, along with a few of Tokotna’s other more naturalistic inhabitants.
“We’re heading out to the Valley today Orion.” Rorin said as he packed a few small bags at the table in the small cabin t

Rorin and Orion entered the clearing. All around them people and Tokotas alike happily walked around. Today was the first day of the summer celebrations, for most that meant good food and music, for others it meant a chance to trade with people who lived in villages across Tokotna, and for others, Rorin and Orion included, it meant a chance to compete in some of the annual competitions. Rorin hopped down from the saddle and pulled the reins over Orion’s head to make it easier to lead him through the relative chaos.
As they walked Rorin occasionally stopped to greet neighbors and familiar faces from past celebrations. This being one of the few celebrations that Rorin really took part in as it was similar to the ones he had gone to in his youth. Orion followed happily, almost prancing, he greeted everyone as if they were old friends the young and the old alike. Eventually one of them asked, “So Rorin you plan on joining any of the competitions this year?” Rorin smiled w

Weekly Quest: Only in the Movies
Rorin and Orion sat around the small fire for warmth. Even in the summer months in Tokotna the nights could get deceptively cold, Rorin was thankful for the thicker coat he had brought along, it had seemed foolish during the day, but now, deep in the heart of the Aqtuquaq Forest, near the Dreaming Waters it was a life saver. The pair had been out hunting during the day and had decided to set up a small camp for the night and return home the next morning with the spoils.
Rorin rubbed his hands together and flexed them over the small fire, next to him Orion huffed. “I know it isn’t as nice as the fireplace at home.” Rorin said as he patted Orion’s head, which was rested on crossed paws next to him. The Tokota was sprawled around the fire, trying to warm as much of his pelt as possible, Rorin had left the saddle blanket on his back to help keep him warm as well although Orion had no trouble doing it himself.
As the night grew darker and their fire slowly died down

Rorin and Orion had returned home, to the Aqtuquaq forest, unsuccessful once again in their taming endeavors. Rorin had taken it in stride and as they had walked home along with their companion Kangee, he reassured Orion that the Tokota had found a good home, one that just wasn’t theirs. After saying goodbye to Kangee, Rorin and Orion continued on through the small town, walking through the somewhat muddy roads before finding the dirt path that lead to their cabin.
Rorin had decided to walk beside Orion rather than ride, he wanted the walk home to be easier on the Tokota, and he wanted to be able to see his companions face if need be. Rorin knew this was always a possibility, not bringing the wild Tokota home, it had happened many times before, but while he knew it and accepted it, Orion always took it harder. Rorin looked over at Orion who trudged alongside him. The Tokota’s head hung low, his whickers nearly touching the rocky path at times. Rorin could tell he was walkin
