The importance of being... accurate?

Journal Entry: Wed Oct 31, 2012, 2:56 PM

With the looooooooooong wait until J-popcon this spring, I should technically have plenty of time to get a lot of costumes ready - so of course, I'm spending my time changing and re-changing my plans for the con again and again. ^_^;

Recently, though, I got an idea for a performance that got me thinking. I really like the idea, and I think it could be pretty cool on stage, but the problem is that for it to work, I would have to deviate quite a lot from the original source material. Not in terms of OOC (though that might be a question for another time) - it's about the internal laws of the series in question (and doesn't it just sound mysterious and exciting when I vaguely put it like that?) The performance I want to make would be impossible in the series itself, but it would be in a way that would only be evident to people who actually know the series, which will realistically be less than one percent of the audience - think 'Batman flying', only if Batman was really obscure in a non-hipster sense. So basically, the only people who will notice what I'm doing wrong will also be the only people who know what I'm cosplaying from. Great.

In a way, though, I've done it before. In our Trinity Blood act at ECG (shameless plug: www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6ZlIE…), I was quite out of character as Paula, who is actually a calm and emotionless killer, but we had to ham her up to add tension - and we had to use her in the first place because we needed an antagonist for the story that I could actually play (Helga would have been more ideal, but nazi uniform? Not gonna happen.) It worked quite well, in my opinion, but I think the only reason it worked is that TB is mostly famous for it's artwork (how many TB cosplayers have actually read the novels?) and Paula is a fairly obscure character who appear only very sparingly in the manga.
But we broke TB's laws even more directly in that skit, even if it might not be that noticeable: As a crusnik, Seth is a vampire that feeds on the blood on other vampires, not humans. Yet (though that effect ended up malfunctioning on stage, damn it), Seth drags out the blood of Paula (who is human) at the end of the skit. Totally not canon. That is not even mentioning that obviously, none of what happens in that skit happens in the actual story, and Paula does not actually suffer death-by-crusnik.

What do you guys think? Have you broken the laws of a series in a skit? Is it okay to take liberties with the source material for the sake of drama? Should one always stay close to the source material? Am I over-thinking it?

I've put a poll up, but I'd love to get some comments as well! ^_^

  • Listening to: Radiohead
  • Reading: Not nearly enough
  • Watching: Polar Bear Café
  • Playing: Okami. Yeah, still.
  • Eating: Cinnamon crisp bread
  • Drinking: Pepsi MAX. Some things never change.
