[18] Slipping across the rooftops amongst the shadowy lengths of the elite's impressive but impractical housing, no one upon the ground might guess your deadly intentions or the passion for your profession that pulled you on.

It was a lovely summer night that London was blessed with. It was pretty late, so the busy capital was unusualy quiet. Only a few dime lights from inside the houses were still awake. The starts were simmering in the sky, keeping you company as you were patiently waiting for your boss to arrive. He had to be very careful when walking out of his settler, given that the police were after him. You were honored to be working as an underboss for England’s most notorious gangster (clandestinely of course).  His name was still remaining a secret for the public though, thus many had desperately tried to disclose his identity.

Nobody has ever seen him. Nothing has ever been revealed. Some even claimed that this man was just a myth. Others believed that this " Hawk" as they called him, had died centuries ago because of the plague. "I'm not done with my business yet" were his last words. His unfortunate soul couldn't rest in peace, so his ghost was still wandering in the streets, looking for his next victim.

You laughed at people's wild imagination.

Your boss was not a ghost!

You knew each other from a very young age. You were childhood friends. Him, you and one of his brothers used to be best friends. You were very close to each other.

Unfortunately, life can make you do some terrible things, even to the ones you loved…

“Missed me, lassie?” a pair of footsteps was suddenly heard approaching.
“Hey there, boss” you greeted the taller man that was now standing in front of you.
Your boss rolled his eyes in annoyance. “You don’t have to be so formal, (y/n). It’s just the two of us” he said.
“We’re in England’s wealthiest suburb. Plenty of Scotland Yard’s police officers live here, you know. I don’t risk it…”you informed in a glum tone.
"Rank has its benefits ..."the male scornfully commented.
The man fumbled his pants’ pocket. “You see, that’s why I admire you, (y/n)” He placed a cigarette between his teeth and lit it up. It was going to be his last one for that night “Always hypothetical and smart.  Always a professional! Even when we were younger, you would warn and save me from trouble.”

You smile, memories subconsciously crossing your mind.
“I still remember you as the little rebel who was constantly picking up fights with all the other boys in class.” You giggle " Especially in high school…”
“It wasn’t my fault there, lassie! They were laughing at my English pronunciation…” he justified.

He breathed out a dense cloud of smoke and looked at you with a smirk cracking on his face.
“And I still remember you as our sweet and innocent (y/n), who always found a way to cover me up.”

You both laughed, momentarily forgetting about the unpleasant reason of this meeting.
Only a few minutes later, your friend landed you back into reality…

"He is the one who was assigned to reveal my identity, isn't he?"
It was mostly a statement rather than a question.
You look at him in a serious way "Scotland Yard desperately wants to know who the leader of your gang is. The Brits are after you"
The uncharacteristically quiet male takes a deep breath to calm himself down.

He seems streesed.

"Has he found much?"
"Not yet."
“To sum up... How is your mission going?”  your boss interrogated with his abrasive accent.
“As planned, boss. As planned.” You reassured him with a grin.
“So… This is it?”
You just nodded.
"Tomorrow night everything will be settled ."

“(y/n), love, where have you been?” your fiancé scolded you once you stepped inside your house. “I was worried sick about you!”
You took of your shoes, closed and locked the door behind you.
“Oh, Artie!”  You smile “You’re early.”
Your answer made him raise a *thick* eyebrow suspiciously  “Problem, dear?”  he asks.
“No, sweetie.” You dulcetly respond .
“Where have you been?” he stoically repeated.
“I was in the pub with Amelia, Alfred’s sister. It was a hard day at work and we decided to relax a little bit.”  You walked into the living room and sat on the sofa. “she invited me for a drink. I know it’s a bit late, but I couldn’t turn her offer down again! I have been canceling it for weeks!”

Arthur leaned on the door frame.

“Alright, sweetheart. I didn’t mean to be so authoritative. I was scared. That’s all.” He took a sit next to you.
You pecked his lips.

“Why didn’t you call me, then?”
“I did!” He cried out “Three times…”
“Oh, I’m sorry!  Maybe I had no signal…”

Arthur sighed  “Just...Don’t do that again , ok? At least, make me a call to reassure that you’re fine. Don’t you know how dangerous it is for you to stay out at night, all alone? Now that I am a chief officer in Scotland Yard, you can be a target of those mafia wankers and been kidnapped or…”  Arthur's green eyes widened full of fear. " No no… Perish the thought." he mumbled.
“Artie…" you intertwined your fingers with his " you don’t have to worry that much, I’ll be just fine.”
“ If anything happens to you…” his British accent cracked “I-I’ll be dead.  I can’t imagine my life without you.”  He hoarsely admitted.
“Don’t worry, my love.” You buried your face in his chest, taking in his intoxicating scent. “You won’t have to.”
Arthur embraced your smaller frame and planted a kiss on your forehead. “I’m so lucky to have you in my life. You can’t assume how precious you’re to me.” He kept on caressing your silky (h/c) hair. You hug him tighter, savoring the moment.

A zoned out gaze took over his features, qualms torturing him.
“I love you, (y/n)" he finally says

Arthur took a sip from his cup of tea. “Why would she lie to me?”
“I think (y/n) is cheating on you, Iggy…” Alfred stated and took a bite from his burger.
“You wanker!” Arthur exclaimed “(y/n) would never do that!”
“And how do you explain the fact that she lied to you?” His American coworker sarcastically questioned.
‘’Maybe, she was indeed in the pub, but not with Amelia?”
“Still a lie.” He bluntly told “I can assure you that my sister was ill and stayed home all night last night.”
“Yes, but why?”
“Why was my sister ill?”
“No! Why would my fiancée lie to me?”
Alfred gave him the cold shoulder. “Who knows. You have to admit, though, that my version is more realistic.”

Arthur searched inside his bag and handed Alfred a (f/c) notebook.

“T-That’s her favorite notebook. She uses it as a diary and she writes down some of her… … you know…  more personal stuff.”
“DID YOU READ IT? WHAT’S IN IT? TELL MEEEE” The other male impatiently begged.
"Of course I haven’t read it, I would never do that!” the British declared. “You’ll do it…” Arthur shyly denounced.
“I’m a spy!” Alfred obnoxiously shouted.
“Be quiet, you sneaky little…” Arthur face palmed.

Everyone in the restaurant was now looking at the two of them.

“HAHAH, BAKA! NICE JOKE!” Arthur laughed hysterically to ease the atmosphere. “Bloody hell, Are you an idiot?” he hissed to Alfred.
“I’m a spy” Alfred confidentiality whispered “not an interpreter. (y/n) probably writes in (y/native/l). I don’t even understand their language!”

Arthur clicked his tongue, annoyed.

The younger male took the notebook in his hands and stared at it.
“Do you… trust her?”
“Since I met her,  Alfred.” Arthur dreamily grinned “ We have known each other for 24 years.”
“You know (y/n) since you were…”
“3 years old. (y/n) was only 2 years old. We were best friends, all of us.”
“You and… “
“Yes. Him” A hint of hatred was apparent in the Brits’ voice.
Trying to tame his inhibitions, Alfred accepted his request and promised to fulfil his task at hand as soon as possible.

After a few minutes, the two friends had to get back to work.
“Let’s go Sherlock!”

Another exciting, but yet tiring day, had come to an end when Arthur exited Scotland Yard's building.
" I can finally go home…”  he meditated, fumbling the inside of his pockets to find his car keys. He pressed the button to unlock his black Jaguar and got in.

He tried really hard to stay focused while driving. He couldn’t stop thinking of the conversation he had with Alfred. The same question was  constantly repeated in  his mind.

Why would you lie to him?

He was determined to take some answers tonight and you were going to give them.
After a few minutes he reached his destination.
He parked, got out of his car, locked the vehicle and in no time he was standing in front of the door.

“Welcome home, honey!” You crossed the kitchen, greeted him and quickly returned to your previous spot, in front of the oven.
Mouth-watering smells had dominated the cozy household.
Enchanted by these aromas, Arthur entered the kitchen, stood behind you and hugged your waist. “What are you cooking there?” he smiled
“Fish and chips!” you proudly informed. “Sit down, ’eyebrows’ ... Dinner is almost ready.”
Arthur sat on the table and you served him a plate of his favorite national food.
“Thank you, darling. It must be delicious!”
You crack a smile and kiss his cheek.  “I’ll be upstairs for a while. I want to take a bath.”
Arthur nodded
“Enjoy” you sang.

He was about to take his first bite when he noticed something unusual on his plate. A few drops of an almost achromatic liquid were now visible on the spot that the fish was laying before.
It couldn’t be water or wine. He scrambled the unknown liquid with his fork.
He was very familiar with this specific fluid, so he recognized it almost immediately.
“Arsenic…” his jaw dropped.

You had tried to poison him…

“Arthur, I am back!” You devilishly call.
Hearing your voice, said man involuntary placed a hand on his hip to make sure his gun was on its case.
“You’re very quiet… as expected. ” You devilishly muttered and walked in the crime scene.
Arthur stood up and pointed his gun at you.
“Love, what are…?” Your eyes widened in shock.
“Didn’t expect me to find out, sweetie?” he simpered
“I’m sorry if the food wasn’t that good, but you don’t have to shoot me for this!”  You hysterically laughed.
Arthur didn’t move a muscle.
“C’mon, Artie. It was a nice one! Also, the food was…”
Your sentence was suddenly interrupted by Arthur dropping the plate near your feet, breaking it into million pieces and spilling its content all over the floor.
“Poisoned… The food was poisoned” He informs in an emotionless voice.
You stare at the ground beneath him, unable to say a single word.
“ Yeah… And I thought my cooking was awful…” he sarcastically said.
“Your personality is as bad…”

His eyes narrowed dangerously, causing you to shiver. Without expecting such a reaction, Arthur grabbed your neck and lifted you up. He pinned you against the wall while resting his gun on your temple.

“Why did you do this to me?” the male hissed.
Seeing you unable to breath, he loosened his hold on your neck.
“I desperately… wanted to a-ask you the same thing 5 years ago.” you breathlessly respond.
"What are you talking about?” he questioned.

And then, he had a brainwave that put all the existing and missing puzzle pieces together.

"You want revenge for him?"
"We want revenge."
Arthur's eyes widened full of surprise.
He stayed silent unable to process your sentence.

“My brother… Allister is still alive!?” Arthur interrogated. "He's the criminal I have to disclose!?"
You averted your eyes, feeling disgusted even looking at him.
“Tell me!” he demanded. “Is he?  Do you work for him?”
“Yes.” You spit “ But it doesn’t matter… You won’t be able to meet him again.” You kick him on his stomach and knock him down. Being too shock to react, Arthur let his gun fly off his hand , landing meters away from his figure.
You ran and grab his revolver.
“Don’t move.” You yell at him. Arthur raises his hands and slowly stands up.
With no hesitation you click the trigger of the gun.
“Gah!” Arthur groans in pain as the bullet sank in his knee.
“I think I told you not to move.”

You both could see and smell the blood that soiled his green uniform.
Arthur was laying on the floor and made a desperate attempt to move, but you mercilessly kick him one more time.
He clenched his teeth in order to prevent any screams of pain coming out his mouth.

You were now the one threatening with the gun.

“L-let’s talk about this…” Arthur begged with tears in his eyes.
You bend on your knees and soak your fingers in his blood.
“This reminds me of the time you shoot Allister.“ you informed. “This wound might had been fatal if I weren’t there…”
Arthur looked at you with questioning eyes.
“I was hiding behind the door of your office and I saw everything. “ the corner of your mouth quirked up.

You moved on top of his body and stabilized him by holding his arms.

“Being power hungry and ruthless is not a good thing, Artie…” you whispered close to his ear. “That’s why you wanted to be a police officer. Scotland Yard has its privilege, of course.” You smirk “But having the same blood with a famous criminal was not one the best qualifications to work on this field. So, the first thing you did when you got ranked was to make sure that this annoying Scotchman would never affect your career again.’’

Arthur’s breathing had become heavy and he had given up on trying to upend you.
He had a severe blood loss and he was extremely pale.

“You took away everyone’s bliss, including mine. I couldn’t stand the idea of my lover being a murderer. Or at least, tried to be a murderer. You almost killed your own brother with no queries, at all. What about his wife, his child? What would they do without him?”
“We… we would have taken care of them.” He lifelessly said.
You looked at him with hatred in your eyes. “Money can’t buy everything, Arthur.”
“I-I’ll make it up… t-to both of you.”
“By dying.” You merely answer.
Arthur stayed silent.
“(y/n)… I need to know something… before...” Arthur pleaded. “Were you… pretending to be in love with me all this time?
“Not from the beginning… However, my love was running out day by day, until nothing had left.”
His green eyes filled with sadness.
“You’re a stranger to me.” You conclude.

Arthur closed his eyes and took a deep, shallow breath.
“I deserve this.” A last tear ran down his cheek.

He stopped feeling pain. He stopped breathing.
He stopped living.

“My mission is complete. I killed a murdered but I lost one of my closest friends.” You leaned on and placed your head on his chest. “I’m just like you, now.” You announce him.

Arthur’s cell phone rings. You don’t bother answering it, so it automatically goes to voicemail…

“Hey Arthur, you need to leave the house immediately!!  I translated (y/n)’s notebook and it’s says that she’s working for Allister. Man! That devil is still alive and they’re planning on murdering you!! The hero's going to rescue you!”
You press the unlock button.
“You’re late, Alfred.” You answer the phone.
“Scotland Yard is already outside, (y/n)." Alfred informs. "You have nowhere to go.”
“I completed my task, Alfred. “ you calmly answer “I’m done.  I am waiting for you.”
You take Arthur’s cold hand in yours , but you immediately let it go.
"You were a heartless man. However... Rest in peace, officer Kirkland."

[4] You lay there in silence, letting the tears fall until the will to keep going slipped away along with everything else worth living for...
