Little Royal Icing Dragon

this was an experiment in 'make ahead of time royal icing decorations'
the dragon was piped using a small rose tip onto plastic wrap
the wings were piped seperately using a small round tip
because the wings dry much faster i was able to peel them off of the plastic and poke them into the still soft body of the dragon
in about two hours
the dragon was then airbrushed and left to dry for 3 days
he could then be peeled off the plastic wrap and used on a cake or other confections
neat, huh?

omg! that is so amazing! You have given me inspiration to incorporate my sculpting into my cake decorating job. I had no idea you could get this detailed with icing!

Hint .... The wings are piped separately and attached when they and the body are dry. These and other royal icing figures can be made weeks in advance if kept dry in an airtight container. I usually leave the dragons on the plastic wrap covered board that I piped them on until I'm ready to use them. That way they don't slide around and get broken.

Thanks for the tips! That advice really makes sense. I'll be sure to do the wings up like that when I get some time to try making my own icing figure :D

Hi! Your little dragon is an amazing work of talent! I was wondering if you had a tutorial for making them?
The-EvIl-Plankton's avatar
No I don't know how to make tutorials. My computer and teleological skills are pretty much nonexistent. Sorry

Haha I'm in Maryland. And I'm no longer a cake decorator. I quit my bakery job after 8 years and I'm now working as a jeweler. I love it ! I should have done it years ago. I'll still be doing the occasional cake for a friend or competition but I'm out of the rest of it. Yay ! Now I work with sparkly things.

You would make a element for each one of the dragons

What is your favorite part of a cupcake?
The-EvIl-Plankton's avatar
No part really. I've been decorating for about ten years now and I'm pretty sick of cake and icing.

Very neat! :D This is incredible! I've been wanting to make dragon themed cakes for a friend of mine for ages now, but every attempt has been failing miserably. I never thought to use royal icing. Very cool.
