Auditions are now closed.  Thank you everyone for submitting an entry to this OCT and for those cheering them on.  Even though we did not reach the 32 contestant mark, this OCT will still go on.  Plans have been made if this was the case.

The judges and I will now go over your entries.  We will have the results of those who will be chasing after the gem within a week with Round 1 starting shortly after.

DarkHeroDude has also been generous to create a meme for this OCT.  Please check it out if you'd like.…

"The Rock of Mars," "The Red Plague," "Heaven's Bloodstone," these are just some of the names in this world of a gem that grants untold power to the one that claims it.  Nearly every culture has at least one story that tells of the gem, whether they know it or not.  The most common name among those who know is "The Scarlet Gem."

Throughout history, the Scarlet Gem has granted its master almost anything they desired.  The gem has caused whole civilizations to flourish into a golden age or be brought to their knees.

Despite the stories and few remaining records of its existence, no one knows how the gem works.  Does it grant its master whatever wish they desire or does it tell its master how to accomplish their goal on their own?

One detail remains constant in every story.  Once its master dies, the gem disappears, never again seen by that generation.

The gem is not lost.  At the death of its master, the gem hides itself somewhere, waiting for its next master to claim it.  Every few hundred years, the gem gives off a powerful discharge, announcing its location to the world.  However, those who seek the gem must hurry, for the discharge also announces the gem's desire to hide elsewhere for several hundred years.

Only time will tell where it will reveal itself next time.

The Scarlet Gem has grown restless once more and seeks a new home.  A strong pillar of light has broken up through the cracks of Gyges Peak, a large cold mountain shrouded in snow and jagged ice, located in the middle of overgrown wilderness.  The gem is far below.  You have only one option, enter the mountain and make your way down through the unknown.

The goal line is now set, but will you make it to the prize?

Welcome to the Drop.

Your goal:
:bulletred: The over-arching goal is simple: Get to the Crimson Gem before everyone else does.  The gem will listen to only one master.

Outside the mountain:
:bulletred: There is a small mining town located near Gyges Peak.  Don't expect much around there but a few small houses, old buildings, and some rusted equipment.  You can get last minute supplies here before entering the mountain.
:bulletred: There are some inhabitants living in the area but they stay away from the mountain as too many strange things have been going on.
:bulletred: The surrounding terrain around the mountain is varied.  There are forests, plains, and rocky terrain.

Beneath the mountain:
:bulletred: The power of the gem has altered the deeper depths of the mountain itself.  Monsters of various shapes and sizes are roaming around down there.  Odds are you won't find any monsters or mutated animals near the surface but the deeper you go, the more aggressive they become.
:bulletred: There are illuminating crystals beneath the mountain as well.  Some areas are covered in it while other areas have none.  Word of warning, though you can break off a piece of crystal to carry a source of light, once separated from its source of power, the glow of the broken shard will fade over time.
:bulletred: What lies beneath the mountain is entirely up to you.  Nothing but tunnels?  Sure.  Giant pool of hot lava?  Go for it.  Only you can say what lies beneath.

About the Scarlet Gem itself:
:bulletred: The gem is not common knowledge.  Most cultures consider it either a lesser-known myth and those who believe of its existence are few and far between.
:bulletred: The discharge from the gem has left an ominous red cloud lingering above the mountain to help locate it.  Stray trails from the cloud do lead to the gem but they may not be the best paths to follow.
:bulletred: Different cultures may have different names for it, even if it appeared multiple times in their history.
:bulletred: How the gem works is a mystery.  Too many records with conflicting evidence exists, leaving its methods up to you.

What are the rules concerning groups? It seems as though there's meant to be one fully mentally/physically capable member and the rest are more like mascots/sidekicks... Am I completely off-base here?
Also, if properly handicapped, are supernatural beings (demons and revenants) allowed?
Is the background world advanced, moderate, or primitive in technology, and is there a high level of magic?
I'm having problems with the specifics.

Groups are fine. There's no limit to the number of members in your group although I personally wouldn't make it too many to the point it becomes a hassle to draw. However you intend for your group to be set up is up to you. (I.e. You can have everyone be equally important or have it so there's one Main character and the rest are minions)

Supernatural beings are okay just so long as they aren't God-moding.

Magic is allowed. Technology can be more advanced than current day technology.

What I mean is: On the world the story is set itself, what's the level of technology available?
wandering-ronin Featured By Owner Jun 18, 2012
The world is like ours in the sense that some parts of the world is far behind when it comes to technology while other parts of the world are far more advanced than ours.

If you have an idea for your character/audition and want to check if it's okay, you can mention it here or note me.

I might do that...

This actually sounds fantastic :D I'm really busy but I don't mind sparing a couple of days just to draw an audition for this :D Even if I get nowhere with it, this is too tempting to not let one of my characters explore XD

I'm working on my animation! X3 It's a bit choppy, but I SWEAR I'll have it up by the time it's due.

Its very interesting eh.
So about that, I have a question. If he/she gets the gem, would it have a one wish? Just asking.
wandering-ronin Featured By Owner Apr 15, 2012
How the gem works is up to you. For example, it could instantly grant wishes or it could magically tell you how to successfully accomplish your goals on your own. However you think the gem should operate is up to your story.

Hmmm, would there be an ocean in at least a range that lets you see the cloud? Obviously not /close/ to the mountain, but not far?
wandering-ronin Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2012
Maybe not close but you could see the red cloud lingering along the horizon if you were at the ocean. The pillar of light was definitely visible from great distances so even if you missed it, word of it could easily spread.
Alerane Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2012  Professional General Artist
Well, I'm asking because if the character I want to use was to be aware of this at all the ocean would need to be close enough for this. :/
wandering-ronin Featured By Owner Mar 26, 2012
The ocean is close enough to see the red cloud, just not the best view of it, but it is possible.
