Sometime ago, I promised I will write a post about secret crusader undercroft preserved below the city of Acre (Israel). This place is not accessible to the public and I have been trying to arrange visit there for the last few months. Few days ago, I finally managed to go there so here we go – the underground, secret crusader halls of Acre!
Today, when tourists come to Acre, they are invited to visit the preserved, Gothic refectory of the knights of St John (I made a post about it few years ago, when I was a student, you can check it out here: https://www.deviantart.com/bricksandstones/art/Halls-beneath-ruins-357512362). Few people are aware, however, that the Hospitaller compound is not the only crusader space that survives below the old town of Acre. Much closer to the sea, in the old Templar quarter of the city, in the backyard of some shops and houses, there is an unassuming door:
