I will no longer be paying for a CORE membership, nor will I be using this site for any further artwork.  I'm debating whether or not to completely remove my account in general, but if anyone still follows me here, I feel it's fair to give an explanation as to why.

Weeks ago, another user I formerly followed (whom I will NOT name) posted a poll with a list of female fictional characters, asking voters to choose which one they wanted to rape.  I found this grossly appalling and filed a complaint.  Today I received a response from DeviantArt telling me that "just because I find it offensive personally, doesn't mean it's against DeviantArt policy."  That's a fair point.  My anger then shifted to "why the fuck isn't that against policy?"  Rape is illegal.  It's a horrible, reprehensible, evil and vile act, and to even court the idea in even a fictional context has no place in a site like DeviantArt in my opinion.  Deviations depicting explicit sexual acts, erect male genitalia or erotic (non-artistic) nudes are prohibited, but soliciting rape opinions is not?  I understand that DeviantArt has their policies in place, and this is not a 'screw DeviantArt' decision or a 'rally against them' post.  This is me finding that policy personally unacceptable and withdrawing my financial support of the site and refusing to use it further as a result.

I understand there is an abundance of fetish-related artists and works on DeviantArt, my page has involved that kind of material almost exclusively.  But there is a clear line between a fantasy representation of a fetish and outright asking who the best victim of rape would be.  That is a line I personally feel has been crossed in this situation, and the dismissive, almost reprimand-like response I got for having the gall to question it has led me to this conclusion.

I won't automatically assume anyone who uses this site is awful, nor do I think a majority of the management of this site is corrupt or even malevolent, but I can't support a site with this kind of policy.  So, after 13 years, I'm closing down shop and ceasing any further payment to DeviantArt.  And if this journal gets removed, censored or if there are repercussions against my account for posting it, especially given that I did not post screenshots of, quotations of, or reveal the participants of the correspondence regarding the offending deviation or the individual that posted it, I'd say that pretty soundly justifies my outrage.
I'm done giving money to people who take it and run.  I've had about eight or nine commissions in the last year that I paid for in full, in advance, from pretty high-profile professional artists, that never got done.  I don't hassle or harass them, I go weeks or months in between notes, and all I get are excuses.  I'm angry, but I won't publicly share the names of these 'professionals' because my frustration isn't justification for drama, and I'm not so petty as I'd want to take a shot at them.  I wish them the best of luck in their profession, and I hope they used my money for something good.  But that's the last cent I'll send for artwork, because I'm not going to gamble my hard-earned dollars for something I may or may not ever receive.  Sorry to the artists that have been professional and honest in their business, but I'm done.  I will no longer be commissioning anyone for anything.  I'm just done with it.

For those scant few who read this journal, please join this movement.  For those of you that know me, you know I'm NOT one to join movements and rallies, but this one seems almost too ridiculous to ignore.  There is a proposed tax that will be applied to radio stations, charging them for each song.  This will line the pockets of big record companies, and drain funds from many small town and private radio stations.  Basically, it's making the rich richer and grinding the voices of the smaller stations into the dust.  If you have a bigger following, and believe in this movement, please post this link in a similar journal to get the word out.  Signing this petition is easy, I did it in about 30 seconds, and it can help prevent big business from putting a price tag on the First Amendment.

It's called FREE speech for a reason.

EDIT:  I was gonna put this in a separate journal, but I didn't want to split them, so here's something else that's equally important:

My vacation to Georgia and Florida was awesome, however I have to say my highlight was finally getting to meet and hang with :iconlakehylia:.  Tlink and Stacky were great fun to be around, and I hope we can meet up again in the relatively near future.  So, to anyone who actually reads my stuff, rest assured it was a fantastic and much-needed rest, and awesome partying and fun was had by all.  Thanks, :iconlakehylia:, for having burgers at Fuddrucker's with us and the hours of Rock Band that followed.  I'll remember it for a long time.

So, I have a lot of friends both here on Deviantart, as well as other networking sites, and they all have something I've kinda wanted: a following.  Sure, I have a few people here and there who leave comments or talk to me on a personal level, but when :iconchaoscroc: throws a ustream, tons of people join.  When :iconlakehylia: posts a pic or a journal, it's viewed, commented, and favorited hundreds of times in the first few hours.  Hell, when :iconcrazycowproductions: posts a poll, the hits get in the hundreds within a day or two. Now, I don't wanna be famous, but... ok... maybe I want to be a little famous... :D

So, here's the deal.  I'm going to start actually applying my various mediocre skills and forming a website.  My plan is to have some sort of editorial meeting place.  Basically, I'll propose a weekly topic, where I'll draw, write, editorialize on whatever I choose, and my friends, should they be interested, are invited to chime in.  Yes, my friends such as :iconchaoscroc: and :iconlakehylia: who I'm pretty sure I could bully/bribe into it.  My goal here, is to build a following not because of whoring myself or my art, but because I'm gathering opinions and ideas in a artistic, humorous, social format.

Here's to a fun experiment in social engineering...

That is all.

And I cave.

So, the commissions thing was going ok, there were some that were interested, some got done, though even at 5 bucks I think the money issue was a roadblock for some folks.  I was just trying to make a couple of bucks and do something I enjoy and need to do more of in the process, but the interest, while not entirely absent, was insufficient.  That said, I'm removing commissions and opening requests.  There's 3 rules:

-Request via notes ONLY please.  I am VERY likely to miss requests made via page comments or any other method.  I won't outright refuse you if for some reason you just don't want to use a note, but I warn you right now it's probable that I simply won't notice the request.

-One (1) request per person at a time.  When I finish your request, you may make another, though you will go to the end of the line to be fair.

-All requests should be relatively simple (no comics, sorry) and they will be penciled and/or inked.  Since they're free, don't expect masterpiece quality :)

As before, there's absolutely no limitation on content, and the final product will be sent to you personally, ie: I will not be posting in my gallery, scraps, webspace, etc.  If you choose to display it, you're free to do so, but please credit me as the artist.

Let the notes flow.

I never do these, but I figured eh, what the hell.

1. Choose a few of your own characters. Five at the most
2. Make them answer the following questions
3. Then tag three people  (I tag:  :iconbvnny:, :iconcrazycowproductions:, and :icongoddessofhell:)

Lord Solaris
Sylvia Tenors

How Old Are You?
L:  Ageless.  I was born at the dawn of creation, and will exist far beyond its end.
S:  Two-hundred and nineteen.
F:  Twenty-seven.

L:  As tall as I want to be.
S:  5’6”
F:  6’2”

You got any bad habits?
L:  I tend to dominate and enslave any living sentient being I’m exposed to.
S:  I’m a messy eater, and blood is very hard to clean out of clothing.
F:  I tend to forget I’m not the only person in the apartment.  Pan goes nuts when I leave the thermostat at 50.

You a virgin?
L:  I am beyond primitive mortal notions of sex.
S:  Oh god, no.  Not since the early Victorian age.
F:  A gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell.

Who's your Mate/Spouse?
L:  Whoever I deem worthy of my divinity… though I am beyond primitive mortal notions of companionship.
S:  That part of me died a long time ago.
F:  *shifts uncomfortably*  Pan and I have a pretty comfortable relationship.

Have Any Kids?
L:  All creatures of Nadith owe their breath to me.
S:   I certainly hope not, but they’d be long dead by now.
F:   Not yet… but mutation tends to be hereditary, so I’m in no hurry to bring kids like that into an intolerant world.

Favorite Food?
L:  The delicious essence of sentient beings’ willpower.
S:   Blood.
F:   Tacos.

Favorite Ice Cream flavor?
L:   I am beyond primitive mortal notions of sensation.  I also have no mouth.
S:   Frozen blood.
F:   Is that a wisecrack?

Killed anyone?
L:   *laughs darkly*
S:   *laughs maniacally*
F:    Only when absolutely forced.

Hate anyone?
L:   Those with free will.
S:   *snarls*  Got an hour?  It’s a long list.
F:   Hate is a strong word, I try to avoid using it.  There’s plenty of people I strongly dislike, however.

Any Secrets?
L:   The depths of my memory would destroy your mortal mind.
S:   Plenty, and that’s where they’ll stay.
F:   Of course, they don’t call it a ‘well-known identity,’ do they?

Love Anyone?
L:   Those that bow to me.
S:   *sigh*  Again, that part of me is long dead.
F:   *smiles*  …yeah.  Yeah, I do.

L:   I am beyond the primitive mortal notions of tacos.
S:   No.
F:   I believe I already answered this question.

Ever slept in all day?
L:   I am beyond the primitive mortal notions of sleep.
S:   It’s kind of what I do… it beats spontaneous combustion.
F:   After particularly stressful nighttime battles, yes.

Eye colors?
L:   Yellow.  Most of the time.
S:   Green.
F:   Blue.

L:   A wreath of flames.  Usually.
S:   Black
F:   Black

L:   Whatever I will myself to be.
S:   Curvy.
F:   Athletic.

What do you do to relax?
L:   Enslave people.
S:   Throw things at people.
F:   Play video games.

What is your job?
L:  Dominate all sentient beings in my realm.
S:   Whatever I want it to be at any given time.
F:   Save the innocent and preserve justice, defending against all criminals, super powered or otherwise.

Any unusual things about you?
L:   I’m the God of Slavery.  That’s pretty unique.
S:   I’m a vampire, but those seem to be a dime a dozen these days.
F:   I’m a mutant.

Boy or girl?
L:   I am beyond the primitive mortal notion of gender.
S:   Girl.
F:  Boy

Favorite Place?
L:  Brimstone Keep, my favored domain.
S:   Anywhere someone’s not trying to kill me.  Very rare these days.
F:   My apartment.

Do you like pancakes?
L:   I am beyond the primitive mortal notion of pancakes.
S:   No.
F:   Sometimes.

Last words?
L:   Enjoy reading this interview with your last precious moments of conscious thought.
S:   *stomach grumbles*  I should actually be asking you that.
F:   It’s about time to start my next patrol; we’re done, right?

And there you have it.

I know, I know. Hell froze over.

So, I've been giving this a lot of thought lately.  I've never considered myself 'good' enough for commissions, so I've never offered them.  I used to take free requests, but had this nasty habit of... never doing them.  I figure this'll give me the motivation and purpose to improve, and make petty cash in the process.

Here's the deal.  I'm still in Afghanistan.  I don't have the resources or the equipment to make any uber cool productions.  I can't digitally color, and I don't have a scanner.  Basically, for the next 2 to 3 months you'll get a digital camera image of what you asked for, and when I can make trips to the post office you'll receive a mailed copy of the original.  While I'm in this deployment, don't expect amazing quality... but don't expect ridiculous prices, either.

As far as subject matter goes, I will draw anything.  ANYTHING.  Seriously.  I will literally draw any idea your sick, twisted mind can think of.  If it's within my ability, I'll do it.  All you have to do is describe it and I'll do my best.

Prices: 5 bucks flat rate.  That's it.  5 bucks per drawing.

Additional character - 1 dollar each.

Comics - 5 bucks for 4 panels, 50 cents for each additional panel beyond that.

Just send a note with your request and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

And there you have it.

End of an Era

Sat Oct 13, 2007, 10:06 PM
This is sad news :(

Growing up in Northeast Ohio, there was one thing I always looked forward to in the summer:  Going to Geauga Lake.

Less than an hour from the house I grew up in, Geauga Lake was Ohio's first amusement park.  Established in 1888 as a lake campgrounds, a steam-powered carousel was built in 1889.  Later, in 1925, Ohio's first wooden roller coaster, The Big Dipper, was constructed.  Throughout the years more and more rides were added, securing Geauga Lake's position as Ohio's very first amusement park.  As ride technology improved, the park expanded.  Across the large lake of which the park was named, the Busch corporation built Sea World over Ohio.  For years the parks operated harmoniously, until Premier Parks purchased Geauga Lake in 2000 and renamed it Six Flags over Ohio.  It was around this time that Busch decided to start adding rides to their Sea World parks, but with Six Flags over Ohio so close to their Ohio location, they offered to buy the park from Premier Parks.  Premier Parks counter-offered, and sought to buy Sea World instead.  When the purchase took place, Six Flags over Ohio merged with Sea World over Ohio and became Six Flags Worlds of Adventure.  In 2004, Cedar Fair, the company that owned Cedar Point and the Paramount (King's Island, King's Dominion, etc.) Parks, purchased the property from Premier Parks and reverted the entire thing back to good ol' Geauga Lake.  Lots of rides were renamed, the Looney Tunes and Warner Bros. logos and stuff were removed, but it seemed Geauga Lake was back to its roots, with a few more rides to boot.

It wasn't meant to be.

Apparently attendance has gone down since all the changing, and Cedar Fair has announced that the amusement park side of Geauga Lake will not be reopening in 2008.  The water park area where Sea World used to be will be a standalone water park; it will continue to be expanded upon, though the historical parts such as the carousel and the Big Dipper, will be dismantled and the land sold off.

This is like a part of my childhood dying and vanishing.  This park was such a significant part of my life growing up, and is so rich with history.  I love Ohio and the area I grew up, and this place was a symbol of that place, surviving almost 120 years.  I even took my wife there for our "poor man's honeymoon" the week we got married, just this summer.  It's hard to see it go, and I have hundreds and hundreds of very fond memories of the place... I guess no matter what happens to the place, I'll always have those.

Rest in peace, Geauga Lake. I'll never forget the fun we had.
