I spent 19 days in Japan from 26th May to 13th June.

All clickable references are zip files with photos.
So use an image viewer.
Please read the comments. There are informative.

26th May 2019: Arrival at Narita at around 15 h 30. Temperature: 30°C.

Limousine bus to the hotel (Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa).
Room on 15th floor. I can see the Tokyo Tower (imitation of the Eiffel Tower in red and white)

Anecdote: There is no floor numbered 13. The lift goes up from 12 to 14 (or down to 14 to 12).
Yet, the Japanese don't have any superstition regarding number 13.
Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa
Anecdote: I switch on my cell phone.

My operator gives me a message: "
Dear customer, have a nice stay in Japan".
(Is this a sign of an excellent service or is this spying?)

27th May 2019: Tokyo.

28th and 29th May 2019: Nara

30th May 2019: Kyoto. The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Sanjo.

On the left of the hotel: The Baker's where I had breakfast every day.

On the menu: option "milk coffee" at will. I took that option.
You just need to say: "kafe-o-re o-negai-shimasu" (milk coffee, please).
For another helping: "o-kawari o-negai-shimasu". I took only a second helping.

(For those interested, the "o-" is a politeness particle used a lot)

31st May 2019:

- Kyoto. Morning: visit to the Kyoto State Guest House

Here is where the Japanese prime minister welcomes heads of state when they come to Kyoto.
The compound is located inside the imperial domain but it belongs to the State.

Permission to visit is not granted to everybody.
There is female guide. Our group is followed by a security gard all along the visit.

- Kyoto. Around 17:40, you can see maikos(apprentice geishas) going to their tea houses.

1st June 2019: Kyoto. Lunch at a restaurant in Kifune village

After lunch, I was lucky to see a Festival

2nd June 2019: Kyoto.

- Visit to a Sake brewery in Fushimi
I was offered a mini-bottle of saké. I bought a bottle of plum wine.

- Teradaya Inn.

An event took place there that all Japanese know.
On 21
st May 1862, a samurai called Ryoma Sakamoto, in favour of Japan's opening to the world, was attacked and wounded there. He survived. He was however assassinated at the age of 31 on 10th December 1867 at the Omiya inn in the Kawaramachi district in Kyoto.

- Cruise on a barge called "jukkokusen" meaning "10-sack barge".

3rd June 2019: Kyoto

Cruise along the canal connecting Kyoto to lake Biwa.

lake Biwa.

4th June 2019: Kyoto

- Morning: visit to the Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace.

Permission to visit is not granted to everybody.
There is female guide. Our group is followed by a security gard all along the visit.

- Afternoon: transfer to Kobe.

4th to 6th June 2019: Kobe. Portopia Hotel. Oval Club. 26th floor. Resting days.

Anecdote: There is no floor numbered 13. The lift goes up from 12 to 14 (or down to 14 to 12).

Strolling through Kobe. Texts in French at 2 shops in the Marui departement store located in San-no-miya district.

The text of one shop is perfect while that of the other one has got spelling mistakes
but we should be lenient.

7th to 13th June 2019: Tokyo. Back to the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa.
I am given the room opposite the one I stayed in. Therefore, no view on Tokyo Tower.

7th June 2019: cruise (with dinner) on a barge in Tokyo Bay.

9th June 2019: Dinner at the Gonpachi restaurant in the Roppongi district.

The decor inspired the maker of the movie Kill Bill for one of the fight scenes. At the entrance hall, I saw a photo of Sylvester Stallone as well as a photo of George Bush junior with former japanese prime minister Koizumi.

10th June 2019:

- Morning: O-Daiba district Aqua City commercial centre.
I came across a female receptionist who I failed to communicate with. Junko, receptionist

- Afternoon: visit to the Tokyo State Guest House

11th June 2019

Tokyo Imperial Palace

Permission to visit is not granted to everybody

There is female guide. Our group is followed by a security gard all along the visit.
Visitors are assembled in a large hall.
Explanation comes in 4 languages: Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean.
The English language group started first.
People must walk on the left because vehicles run on the left in Japan.
(the security guard is there to remind you, if need be)
Apparently, the guide has usually problems with the Japanese group.
As most of them are old people they turn to the right when they are told to go to the left.
The guide hasn't got that problem with the English group who follows her scrupulously.
You wouldn't like to get lost, would you?

How to apply for a visit to the Tokyo Imperial Palace?

1) You must send your application 4 months before the date you want to visit.
2) The applicants are selected by drawing lots.
(les sollicitants sont sélectionnés par tirage au sort)
So, there is no guarantee you will be selected!

3) If you have been selected, you will receive an approval document. Print it and
write your application number attributed by the office at the moment of application
(don't forget this number!) and your phone number and take it with you.
4) On the day of the visit, show the approval document and your passport and it's free of charge.

Photos 001 – 004 :
Gardeners nicknamed « ninja-gardeners ».

They do this clearing twice a year.
So, we got lucky.

Photos 010 – 017 : We got the mounted police as well !

Photos 018, 018_a, 018_b and 018_c :
From the balcony, the imperial family appears on 1st January and

the emperor wishes the people a happy new year.
The guide said that the square can host about 20,000 people.

How to apply for a visit to the Tokyo State Guest House?

1) You must send your application 2 months before the date you want to visit,

and this during a specific period.

For example, if you want to visit on 25th August 2019 you must apply between 27th June and 2nd July.

2) The applicants are selected by drawing lots.

(les sollicitants sont sélectionnés par tirage au sort)

So, there is no guarantee you will be selected!

3) If you have been selected, you will receive an approval document. Print it and take it with you.

4) On the day of the visit, show the approval document and pay 2,000 yen in cash!

Taking photos inside is not allowed.

Anectode1 : Actually, I wanted to visit on 27th May 2019 but because of Trump's visit the date was

postponed to 10th June 2019. Mind you, this hasn't got anything to do with Trump as such because

it would have been the same with any other head of state.

Anecdote 2:

At the entrance hall, all guests are to take off their shoes and put on the slippers provided to walk on

the tatami mats. Even the Japanese emperor conforms to the rule. Well, admittedly, you are going to

tell me that he is supposed to be an example.

However, when Queen Elizabeth II was scheduled to visit the place, the British Foreign Ministry

informed the Japanese Foreign Ministry that the Queen would not take off her shoes.

So, the Japanese Foreign Ministry had special slippers made out of an expensive type of silk that is

used for kimono sashes.

Therefore, when Queen Elizabeth II came she put on the special slippers over her shoes and could

visit the place.

Yes, it cost the Japanese taxpayers a lot.

One thing is sure, Queen Elizabeth II is not cheap!

10th June 2019

Tokyo. O-Daiba district Aqua City commercial centre.

This is Junko. She is a receptionist. She can speak Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English.

In case you haven't noticed, she is not a human being but an android, or should I say a gynoid.

She is supposed to be able to interact with humans. However, I failed to communicate with her.

Origin of my pseudo

My astrological sign is Taurus.
Taurus in Latin means "bull".
Thathanka is a Sioux word meaning "male buffalo".
Well...so to speak, a male buffalo is a kind of bull.
There was a famous Sioux leader called "Sitting Bull" ("Thathanka Iyotake", literally "male buffalo rolling in the dust"). For more details, check the internet.

Bernard is my real first name. It comes from two Germanic words: "bear" + "hard".
So, hard like a bear.
