SW: Map of Azteca by ThanyTony SW: Map of Azteca by ThanyTony
So I've had this idea for a while now of going deeper into the countries of SW and I decided to trace the maps and give them something else to make them stand, so I began with Azteca (Mexico in the SW universe), as well as some useful data to provide some context of how this country is in Strike Witches.

Anyway, Enjoy!

The word "Aztec" is actually of modern origin, with the Nahuatl word "Mexica" (which you use on your map) being the actual name used by the people of the Valle de Mexico to refer to their tributary empire. The fact that this country is named "Azteca" isn't actually an indicator of less Hispanic colonial influence. It is more of an indicator that the creator of this universe cared more about cool names than about linguistic accuracy.

Here are some other complaints I have about the names:

-The word "California" is from a European legend about a mystical island
-The words "Alta" and "Baja" are Spanish
-None of OTL Alta California is actually contained within this "Azteca"
-None of Chihuahua is in OTL Chihuahua
-None of Coahuila is in OTL Coahuila
-None of Tamaulipas is in OTL Tamaulipas
-None of Jalisco is in OTL Jalisco
-None of Michoacan is in OTL Michoacan
-None of Oaxaca is in OTL Oaxaca
-None of Chiapas is in OTL Chiapas

I see, thanks for telling me all this.

But the valley of Mexico isn't ALL Mexico, and as far as I understand the word "Aztec" was indeed a modern umbrella term coined for all etnicities that came from the mythical "Aztlan" (From where Mexicas come from) so it does have a cultural background, calling the entire land "Mexica" wouldn't be fair because not all of them are Mexicas, some of them aren't even part of the nahua tribes that came from Aztlan, so using the term "Azteca" to cover all etnicities in across the land seems much fair name than "Mexica" and it goes with one of the overall themes in the series "World Unity" nations and people joining forces together when in real life they really didn't, maybe it's not 100% accurate but it fits the theme in the series which is what I think what Humikane wants to go for, not to "Be Cool" he is not that kind of creator.

Also the term was coined around 1843, They got their independance in 1821..is it really that farfetch to imagine they could have used the term first?

As for the others, I think it's easy to see this map does not look real life Mexico looks like, and considering there are other places, for starters it has that weird globe perspective and even if it was correctly possitioned, it would stil look radically different, however this design is 100% intentional on his part, why? Only he would know, anyway, so I have to adapt those staters as best as I could to make them fit in the closest possition I could.
So I am sorry if it's not 100% accuarate to how it looks in real life.

I think the shape of the continents is one of the things that bothers me the most about this timeline. Realistically speaking, OTL names wouldn't just shift to fill the space. It's a hard problem to fix.

"Realistically Speaking"

You've told me about it before, but I tend to get nitpicky when it comes to anime. I tend to appreciate when someone takes an unrealistic (anime) scenario, such as the Holy Britannian Empire featured in Code Geass, and adapts it so that it is historically accurate and plausible.

But, of course, I understand that worrying about the details and "historical accuracy" of an anime series is, ultimately, a pointless endeavor.

Exactly.
And to be honest, I could actually arrange everything so it makes more sense, but I don't want to and I prefer to adapt myself to what already is there, I feel that if I arrange everything I'll just be doing fixing fanfiction and that just feels wrong and disrespectful toward Humikane so I prefer to try to adapt things to what he already set, it's not that accurate but I try to make it work.

HA well there's where we differ. I wouldn't dare disrespect the creator of a popular anime series by trying to fix their plots and visuals, because I have little to no experience with or knowledge about such things, but I will correct ANYONE who is being historically inaccurate and doesn't have the credentials to prove otherwise. Anime is their specialty, not history or cartography. I feel completely justified in "fixing", if you will. But, do what you will. No one ever said that good cartography had to be 100% accurate.

It's not just Meso America, the ENTIRE world in the Strike Witches universe is radically different (Except for Africa, that one still looks the same) take a look: vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/s…

The entire continent of Liberion (America in there) is very different, it looks like if someone or something went to the south and began pushing the continent upward jamming Azteca into the United States of Liberion ripping it in half. twisting Central Liberion to form a golf between it and chiapas.

It's a pretty odd shape, and the fact that Africa and Australia still looks the same tells me that Humikane did not badly copied the map from a real life Map, that means the desing IS intentional...my theory is that probably some really HUGE Neuroi shaped the world like that.

It'd be pretty interesting to explore that possibility I think.

I guess that I don't completely understand what the original concept was about. Simply from what I can see, such a world would be virtually impossible without some sort of giant ASB, which is probably what happened. There's no way that these sort of upward continental shifts could have resulted in a political and cultural atmosphere such as this one. The ocean water displaced by the rise of ocean beds in the North Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea would have flooded lowlands in the eastern hemisphere, isolating areas connected OTL, submerging natural resources, and changing the migration patterns of early man, let alone the alterations to the gene flow. New species would have evolved to fill new niches. Unless some sort of supernatural power raised the sea floor some time in the recent past, and removed quite a bit of sea water, this doesn't seem plausible.

You're not familiar with Strike Witches, it's a science fantasy anime series based on a series of illustrations by artist Shimada Humikane, he is the creator of the concept of "Mecha Musume".
The series takes place in an alternate world where a group beings of unknown origins called Neuroi came to our world some time in the pass and have been since causing all source of havok amoung mankind's history (taking on various forms, some of them beng the classic monsters such as dragons, hydras and all that good stuff).

However humanity has a way to combat them, a group of magically gifted girls called "Witches" who using the power of a familar can gaing superpowers and have fight the Neuroi across time...in the process history has changed in various points.

So with some things some suspension of disbelief is required as I stated, Science Fantasy.
But still, the concept of the series is absolutly amazing and the world it builds is incredible, I've been working on filling the empty spaces for a while now like translating the names of the nations and making it fit with the main canon of the series and giving this really awesome world some shape.
