Divided States of America by ThaDrummer Divided States of America by ThaDrummer
These Divided States..

THE UNTHINKABLE HAS HAPPENED These United States, has balkanized beyond recognition. Either by some circumstance, by war, disagreement, or peaceful means, new national entities are carved up through unique situations, allying with some or in conflict with others.

The 31-state United States of America is still a viable regional power, but a far cry from the superpower and cultural hegemony of it's predecessor, bearing a dim resemblance in name and flag only. The Divided States of America is a staple in alternate and speculative history, though there have been dangerously close calls.

The states that were once the US of A, in spite of the circumstances of breaking up, declare themselves the successor to it, it's values, influence and culture. Yes, even their constitution and regional partitions are modeled after their Federal father, albeit with a twist.

With regards to the nature of relationships between the "children of America", there are three power blocs or alliances that constitute these relationships; the Union Bloc, The Southern Alliance and the Pacific Social Democratic Cooperation.

The Union bloc, led by Washington DC, favors mutual cooperation between them and the territories that they 'let go'. The Southern Alliance is an on-again, off-again agreement between the conservative CSA and New Africa. We can say they are vitriolic best buds. The PSDC led by California, aims to promote, develop and innovate ideas of liberalism, socialism and social democracy.

Conflicts do arise in these divided states. For one, Texas and Aztlan cannot agree on the control of West Texas, while Deseret is in open conflict with Cascadia over a part of former Idaho.

UPDATE:

- Designed new flags for Aztlan and New York.

- named their sub-national entities.

(June 13, 2016) - New flags. :<

(March 25, 2018) - added a buffer state; Aniyunwiya. Also, the New Californian Republic has seceded (with the help of Deseret, the USA and the CSA), only leaving the Peoples Republic of California with a sliver of the coastal area, devastated and prime real estate for a North Korean-style system instead of a Chinese-style socialist republic.

And in a little part of north Indiana forms the Jackson Republic. Formed from people weary from division and war, they turn to their only comfort they can hold on to and rally under. And for these people it's Michael Jackson. The populace of this republic believe that the Prophet Michael will return in glory and hold on to his message through his songs.
In their eyes, with all the conflict and poverty resulting from division they know they are not alone. They have to care about the living by starting with the man in the mirror. Making a little space, they are saving their own lives to make the world a better place, whether black or white, for you and for me. The message couldn't be any clearer.

Northern California was traded for what's left of Oregon in a treaty.

I love how the Black Republics unite occasionally with the CSA because the fact is they are not as* racist as they were before down there.

The Republic of Jackson SOUNDS ridiculous, but I've been on the Internet, people believe crazy things.   The most influential crazy things of course, being Religions.

Something like this is very likely in our future.  America is not and never was a single culture, it has always been a union of separate micro-nations with unique cultures and origins.  Voting patterns show that slowly but surely there is a trickle of like-minded people moving together into these micro-nations and it's influencing elections as each one fights for it's own culture and beliefs to be represented in Washington, each believing they are the true American spirit.    When the difference becomes geographical, civil wars, begin.

And as, according to Biohistory.org we shift from impersonal loyalties to personal ones due to a fall in C from Civilization changing our temperament, and as stress rises across America, Civil War, is a total possibility in the future.

And much like the blocs shown here, there are indeed unions between these micro-nations that influence elections.

bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/…

It has been 241 years since America began. Typically as seen throughout history, Empires, Civilizations, and Nations only last about 330 years.

Though the most important factor is never multi-cultural regions, it's always a loss of united nation feeing, once that feeling is lost, wars of independence begin.

Are the Lakotah still a part of the Union block? Or an independent nation?

Gotcha, So part of, but separate.  Is the population only of Lakota people or can folks of other ethno groups live there? Mostly want to know because that would be a very small population for such a big area if only they lived there.

Nice to see that I am not the only one who went for a Cascadia Deseret, "Snake River War" in their broken US setting.
I have a few questions.
Where is the Capital of the NCR? Reno?
What is the Difference between the AAC and New Africa?
Why is New Africa so big? That takes a lot of the industrialized old Southern states out of the Southern Alliance. (I am assuming that they are mostly antagonistic to the CSA)
Is Alaska part of any of the power blocks? In my Setting I have it occupied by Russia, but mostly as an excuse to Wargame my own version of the Pacific Social Democratic Cooperation, and Canada against them.

And an observation or two.
I could see parts of Northern Virginia staying with the Union Block because many of those folks work in D.C. or the Federal government.
I kind of like that the Navajo kind of have their own state in RDA.

I had in mind that East San Fran would be the NCR's capital. Just to parallel East and West Germany. The Government of the NCR is planning to develop the Reno-Carson City Metropolitan Area.

The AAC are the black enclaves of the CSA, who are predominantly Christian, conservative and hold on to the southern culture. They stayed behind due to the New Afrikan Movement being too radical initially.

New Afrika fought for it. They covered a lot of ground at the most vulnerable time in the balkanization.

Alaska is independent. They have allies in Canada, Cascadia, the rump USA and the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Hawaii sends some of the fleet to protect key port cities. Since it still has oil reserves, I picture them becoming a frozen Dubai.

The map is subject to change though. I like it to evolve, and add more states or enclaves to it.

Huh, some new nations were added since the last time I saw this picture. I got a few questions though.

1. Is Aniyunwiya a Cherokee state?

2. Where's the African-American Congress? Are they in those enclaves within the CSA?

3. Is there any Cajun separatist movement within Louisiana?

Anyway, cool map. Hope to see potential updates to this map in the future. If you feel like doing that, that is. :D (Big Grin)

Aniyunwiya is a buffer state established, but nominally Cherokee.

The African-American Congress are the political organizations of the enclaves that chose to stay in the CSA. ^_^

Interesting. the AAC kinda reminds me of the Bantustans within Apartheid South Africa. I have a few more questions for you.

1. Is the AAC what black confederacy sympathizers from our timeline would be if the CSA still existed?

2. Did you take design cues for the flags of New York City and Las Vegas from their city flags rather than the state flags of New York State and Nevada?

3. Ever thought of having Navajo become an independent Native American state in this timeline? (Somewhat unrelated, but today I just discovered that there was an actual Aztlan flag, and all it took to find it was a simple Wikipedia search that I initially didn't expect to find anything. That was a nice surprise for me.)

4. So I'm guessing there was no Cajun/Louisiana separatist movement then, right?

Have a nice day.

Thanks for those observations!

1. Yes, the AAC are those black confederacy sympathizers and a sizable number of African-Americans that chose to stay behind.

2. Yes. New York state is de facto run by New York City. Same for Las Vegas. Both consider themselves as city-states. There is a great divide in New York between the Metropolis and the rural areas.

3. The Navajo will most likely align with Aztlan. Indian reservations and tribes will have different loyalties in a Divided States.

4. It dawned on me from reading the different legal systems of the world, that law in the state of Louisiana is based on French and Spanish civil law. I am tempted to update this map in the future.

Cheers.

the nation looks good, I'll admit DAT flag is also good, IDK why but a nation that's not a city-state like San Marino, and is large and is surrounded by just one nation just makes me cringe for some reason.

REPEATING:

For some reason, Alaska and Hawaii don't seem to be in any alliance here - or they aren't shown. In which alliance they are?

Also, I suspect that Alaska is allied to Deseret due to them both being Perpetually Pissed About the Tree-Hugging Cascadians Stealing Their Lands. Yeah.

What would be a good analogue to the annexation of Crimea, then? I'd take it the neo-CSA is the Ukraine analogue, then with the other members of the Union Bloc being analogous to those former SSRs who have close ties to the Russian Federation?

You can consider New York a divided state. NYC and Long Island would go do their own thing while upstate NY does its own thing. Because right now, it's a dictatorship since NYC controls the politics FOR THE ENTIRE STATE.

May I suggest moving the US capital from DC to Philadelphia, Chicago, or Columbus, OH? Because having your national capital on the border of what I can only assume is an aggressive military power is just bad planning.

Shhh..(they did move their most important centers of administration elsewhere, the White House is practically a facade in this timeline) And Richmond is in their crosshairs though. MAD all over again. Or, imagine the same situation as Seoul and Pyongyang. If the CSA attacks, insta-nukes.

You do have a good point though.
