Colors: black armor with grey power pack and lower legs, shoulders dependent upon individual company colors

Symbol: a halved black and grey shield with stylized Ultima symbol, a golden star imposed in the center

Beliefs: created during the Nineteenth Founding (on record as being the smallest Founding of Space Marine Chapters in Imperial history), the Sable Shields are proud descendants of the Ultramarines, who believe it is their sacred duty to defend the worlds of the Imperium against all enemies. The difference is that the warriors of the Sable Shields take this duty and belief to a whole new level. In the two millennia that they have existed, the Sable Shields are known for being one of the preeminent masters of defensive warfare. They are known for also being consummate swordsmen, though not on the level of other chapters like the Lightning Swords. If there's one particular quirk about this chapter, then it's their love for the shield. The Sable Shields believe that the shield is the perfect offensive/defensive weapon in mankind's arsenal. It can be used to protect the warrior from harm, but it can bring harm upon the foe as well. Thus it is noted that every single battle-brother of the chapter carries his own shield with him. All manner of storm shields and combat shields can be seen within the ranks of the Sable Shields, of every known type. It is Chapter tradition for a Sable Shield battle-brother to carve out his name upon his shield, along with creating his own personal coat of arms to identify him in the battlefield. Thus, no shield is alike in the chapter, each Sable Shield's barrier crafted according to their own preferences and emblazoned with the marine's personal heraldry. While it is not possible to carry the shield on every occasion as other combat roles must also be adopted, the sons of the Chapter use their shields in battle as often as they can. These shields see more battle and service with the tactical and assault contingents of the chapter than in all other specialist roles. The Sable Shields also have their own distinctive company identifications that honor the Codex Astartes's spirit, if not its letter. The shoulders are painted in the company colors (1st is white, 2nd is gold, 3rd is red, 4th is green, and so on), whilst the left kneepad is also painted in the company colors and displays the squad numeral with a horizontal stripe painted in the individual squad colors; this is a mirror display of the marine's company. The company number is also painted in that company's colors and displayed on the lower left leg. An example is this brave battle-brother of the chapter seen above; his shoulders are painted in the purple colors of the chapter's 7th Company, the left kneepad displaying the numeral 1 and white stripe across it, denoting him as a warrior of the 7th Company's First Squad. Thus are the Sable Shields revealed.
