This kind of reminded me of the "Preta" realm beings as they are described in buddhist cosmology. It would be one of the six realms of possible rebirth, according to it, with the others being animal, human, "hells" (or 'naraka'), "heavens" ('devas' or gods), and "demons" ('ashuras' or demigods). Pretas are often translated as a "hungry ghosts" realm.
I love this interpretation, or how it reminded you of that tradition! Thank you for your comment!
You're welcome! In all 6 realms there is suffering, but this one is one is one of the two "worse", beings in it have many classes, but they are mostly depicted as having desires they can't fulfill at all, and are therefore described as having very big stomachs (even of the size of a mountain, I've read) while having mouths of the diameter of a nail! ... they seek for water but when they arrive there's not, or it is that it burns their throats (lots of suffering there, yes, not as much as in "hells" but a very miserable life, and the lifespan there is freaking long compared to a human life). Looking at what you have in your gallery, I'm sure you would get many ideas and inspiration for your drawings by reading descriptions of the Preta realm. If I come across the description where I read about it I'll send it to you. I believe you may find it interesting.
