Artemis Ephesia--NOT FOR SALE by templeofapollon Artemis Ephesia--NOT FOR SALE by templeofapollon
Artemis as she was represented in Ephesus. The eggs are her chest are floating and are gathering between her arms, whereas the torches were inspired from terracotta images of the goddess which shows long torches balanced in her palms. The lions emerging from the flames are inspired from those lions on her sleeves, just as the honeycomb veil is from the bees which decorate her, and the horned moon representing the horned animals that also decorated her. The crown itself is inspired by a particular statue in which the goddess wore the city on her head flanked by sphinxes.
Here she stands before the portal, even as her temple was as a portal to the city, resting outside of the city.
