Tundratown Hockey Player (Zootopia) by Temiree Tundratown Hockey Player (Zootopia) by Temiree
Sorry for the late posting guys! It kept skipping my mind to post this.

I wasn’t planning to do any Zootopia hockey/sports stuff for a while, but I feel I needed to celebrate, haha. Not only did my team win in the NHL Draft Lottery last night, so did another underdog team I was hoping for if we didn’t. It was pretty miraculous, and I was pumped. It manifested into this. :D

No name for this fella yet, but he’s a professional ZHL player - a speedy, goal-scoring wolf who plays for the Tundratown Arctics. He’s far from being the biggest player, but his speed and ability makes up for his size. Expect a character lineup sometime soon!

This is awesome! I love hockey. This reminds me... I had a story idea featuring a hockey playing goat making it to the NHL. Maybe I should revive it!

Nope! Probably going to have the last name Wulf or something though, considering how most of the characters in Zootopia are named.

so, what would have otherwise been just an original character of yours now belongs to the disney corperation?

sorry if this came across as rude, i just kindof have a pet peeve for zootopia fan characters that the artist calls original, cause imo, "if your labeling it as zootopian, its no longer original."

Oops, missed this.

Disney has no right to the character just because it was inspired by something they made. Fan characters are made all the time for many different things, but the rights to them are never transferred or stolen. In fact, if Disney decided to use this character, I could sue them for plagiarism. That's why many companies don't accept any fanart or fan fiction when it's sent to them. They keep it sealed and hide it away. Using characters, stories, or anything created by fans without notification or payment puts them at risk of being sued for plagiarism. So yeah, this guy doesn't belong to the Disney corporation, and never will.

I'm curious why you think simply describing a character as Zootopian makes it no longer original? I conceived, designed, drew, and colored this character from scratch and my own inspiration. The only affect Zootopia had on it was the team name and what proportions I chose for his legs. I'm not sure how that's not original, just because I said he lives in that world. In fact, sports were never covered in the movie.

you make some good points; but i'd like to answer your question anyways. Worldbuilding. While, in light of the points you just made, it should be perfectly fine to set your character in somebody else's world, it still bugs me because it feels less original and alittle lazier than building your own world for your characters, cause you dont have to think nearly as much about the details that make that world yours and unique.

For example, my fursona. He lives in an Island nation called Oceanhaven, something i built completely from scratch and am still developing. I've had to consider the designs for the unique vehicles of Oceanhaven, the geography of both the main islands, the climate, what type of buildings are on each island, what people have to wear due to the color-coded caste system in place, etc.

Wheras with zootopia, Disney's animation concept, art, animation etc. teams already came up with all of that for you and all you have to figure out is how to draw it.

But i do see that there is a hole in my logic; because certain aspects were not covered by the movie as you said. so my advice is; with what little of the zootopian world you have tasked yourself with the creation of; be as creative as possible with it. Why settle for a normal hockey ring when you can design one that creatively expresses the idea that it was built for many different types of arctic animals to play hockey in? Or why settle for a smaller-but-otherwise-normal waterpark for little rodentia when you could make one that would cater to the specific needs of the small rodents that swim there, such as the thermal problems they sometimes have?

If your gonna be original with sombody else's world, I think it would be a good idea to do the same sorts of research that the people who made that world did. Look at some real hockey rings and real hockey players and study arctic animal behaviors and needs, and then take that information and use it creatively. Same with the little rodentia waterpark.

Study the several different types of water slides and stuff in waterparks across the world (quite a few interesting varieties on youtube, actually.) Study how small rodents swim and what their thermal/other needs may be.

I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything just so you know. I'm just trying to give some feedback on how i think you could be more original with zootopia; being that you are having to create your own parts of sombody else's world.

Oceanhaven was/is built the same way actually; i've studied real life dystopias like north korea and soviet russia and also taken inspiration from other sources like Riven, the sequel to Myst.

So, TL:DR is this:

If your gonna try to be original with parts of sombody else's world, be as creative as possible and my best suggestion is to do so by studying real life and other's work.

Zootopia isn't really all that original of a concept. People have been drawing animals living together in anthropomorphic forms for centuries. The only quality I'm really even taking from it is that characters are more animal than human, so raccoons are smaller than kangaroos, much smaller, which puts an interesting spin on Ryan and Nestle's friendship. If I didn't explain that those were their Zootopia versions, it would create a lot more confusion why I draw them humanoid sometimes, and normal animals other times. Zootopia is an easy explanation that most anyone will understand right away, even those who don't follow my art closely, like on Tumblr where people who don't follow me can see my art when it's reblogged by others. Plus, having a huge paragraph explaining it would turn people off from paying attention to my art. To me having that instant understanding is more important than being 100% unique, since in reality, "nothing is created in a vacuum."

That's cool you're developing Oceanhaven. If it's something you enjoy, keep doing it! Having a passion over something like that is great. But all that extra world-building stuff you're describing? That's way too much work for me. These Zootopia sketches are something I mean to do for fun. All that world-building is more intended if I was actually planning to create and sell my own story, which I'm not intending for these drawings. I already have two other big projects that it would apply to though (two stories of my own creation, one being an animation). Spending days and days coming up with 100s of details for my own world just for the privilege of drawing my characters more animal-like isn't something I'm a fan of, and would take the relaxation out of it. Plus, chances are someone would eventually go, "is this related to Zootopia?" anyway.

Why settle for a normal hockey ring when you can design one that creatively expresses the idea that it was built for many different types of arctic animals to play hockey in?

Because I've only drawn one picture of one player and haven't even had the chance to do that yet. =P I've already explained why this character succeeds in the league despite being a bit smaller than most. It's because he's fast and accurate with his shots, an ability worth keeping despite their being lots of larger, heavier animals to choose from (which would normally be a benefit in a physical sport like hockey). I had planned to do a lineup of the entire team, showing their different sizes and personalities, but other things got in the way and I haven't had the time for that yet.

Overall I respect your intentions, but it feels like you're essentially asking for me to make a job out of something I only want to do for fun. I see it that it's your idea of fun to build worlds, but these Zootopia things are what I do to take a break from real work that I have to do. Doing hours upon hours of research for any single fun piece, just so I can claim I'm 100% original, isn't my idea of fun. X) In the end, nothing we do will ever be 100% original anyway.

/it feels like you're essentially asking for me to make a job out of something I only want to do for fun/

I wasnt really intending to do that, sorry. I see your point and respect your view on it; and i never said you should be 100% original or write a whole paragraph on the details of stuff. (i did say that Oceanhaven was party inspired by Riven, right?)

Basically all im trying to say is that I, personally, enjoy art that has creative World Building put into it. Art that is detailed enough, that it tells a whole story with one image without any explanation about the story being needed.

I also enjoy art thats more like this, just cause I like the ideas people come up with for their characters. But I dont experience it quite the same way, you'know?

I really didnt intend this to be as heated/tense as it is, I Wish you the best in having fun with your art. Thats something i can rarely do cause I dislike my own art's complete lack of aesthetic appeal.

Sorry if my original message came off that way, I promise it wasn't heated or tense on my side of things. X) I apologize if it did. Maybe I could have picked my words better, but I had somewhere to be and had to finish it quickly without as much proofreading as I usually do.

I respect your view as well, and your intentions are noble of course. =) Since I love Zootopia's world, I just adopted that as a means and context to more animal-looking representations of my characters. Some alternate universe where they could all exist together instead of split up in different worlds like how they are canonically. It creates some interesting interactions I wouldn't get otherwise.

Just yeah, I wasn't sure if you had certain expectations or not. ^^; In an ideal world I'd have the time to craft my own world where all this could happen, separate from Zootopia, but honestly it probably wouldn't end up much different in the end anyway. Mostly just certain names wouldn't be used (eg. Little Rodentia). But, I'll continue to do my best to at least build off of Zootopia with my own imagination though, instead of copy it exactly how it was represented in the movie. =) So in a way, I'm still world building, just building off something started by the artists at Disney.

Sorry again if my original message came off negative or in some stern way to you. It definitely wasn't my intention either. But yeah, TL;DR: I respect your way of doing things, and I appreciate you encouraging me to do more world building on my part, it's just that there's certain reasons why I didn't start from scratch. Hopefully you'll see some world building I've done in regards to other things soon. =D And good luck with yours!
