...Do not forgive me. Do not seek me out. Do not waste another moment of love on me. Despise me only- as I despise myself. I wish that you will be a better creature than I have been, and do more kindness and less harm.
-Leland

Her hands began shaking uncontrollably, and she gripped the heavy writing desk, the inked letters on the page crinkling beneath her fingertips. There was a ragged, rhythmic sound in her ears, and she realized moments later it was her own breathing. How long had it been since she last drew breath? But now it was simply happening, unbidden, as if her life once again depended on it.
Still gripping the sheet of vellum, she backed away from the desk and sank onto a cushioned bench, a dark and abyssal panic tearing at the edges of her thoughts. Even as her heart commanded her to run, to find him, to bring him home and forgive him, she could not summon the will to stand up. After all this time, after so many years as her constant companion, he had abandoned her to an eternity of night, and hunger, and loneliness. Tears, thick and scarlet and warm, pooled in her eyes, and although she opened her mouth to scream or moan or make any sound at all, she could not. And even now, she could still feel the pull of his blood on her own, and in her heart, a pain and guilt that she knew could only be his.

Oh noes, DRAMA!! :noes: :sadangel: After well over a century of being her consort and mentor and general reason for continued eternal living, Leland left Claris. This is TOTALLY DEVASTATING, guys! :cries: But he must have had a good reason, right? RIGHT?! :tears:

Well, this is the whole situation, so I guess you can decide for yourself whether he did or not. As always, feel free to skip if plot's not your thang, since this is a bit of an incoming text wall. ;)

While hunting down a couple of troublesome initiates of the Cainite Heresy, Claris was trapped inside a burning building, and Leland, in the grip of rotschreck (that's a panic frenzy for those of you who don't know VtM ;)), saved her. Claris is pretty exceptionally empathic, especially with him, and so while he was carrying her out of the fire she accidentally glimpsed his surface memory. He was flashing back to when he was alive, and his wife and daughter were trapped in their house when it was set aflame by Roman soldiers, and he saved them. This was the most she had ever found out about his centuries-dead human family, and it turned out to really be more than she ever wanted to know; Leland's dead wife, Brenna, looked almost exactly like Claris.

Now, this is kind of freaky, but nothing she couldn't eventually have dealt with. When Leland came back to himself, he could tell something was bothering her, and (because she basically can't lie to him about her feelings since they're blood-bound and fully aware of what the other is feeling at the time) she was forced to explain that she had... learned a little more than she wanted to. They went home together without much further conversation, and he went right to his study and started writing, which is what he does when he's... distressed. She went to sleep early. When she woke up, he wasn't in bed with her, and when she went to check the study he wasn't there, but a few key books were missing and there was a letter on his desk for her.

Summed up neatly, the letter basically explained that when he first saw Claris as a mortal, she reminded him impossibly of his wife. Remember the feral Gangrel girl Leland had been tracking to Claris's village, who dragged her out of her lord's manor, chased her into the woods and drained her nearly dry so Claris would have died if Leland hadn't come along and made her a vampire? Leland let the girl in, intending to use Claris as bait to lure her... and if Claris was horribly injured or nearly killed, then he could Embrace her, and he'd have a childe who... surprise surprise... just happened to look almost exactly like his wife. Whenever Claris would ask, years later, how and why Leland chose her, he claimed it wasn't he who chose her, but fate and coincidence, and that he was doing the truly egalitarian and non-elitist thing by allowing circumstance to do the selection. He really did believe that on the surface, but unconsciously, he knew why he picked her as a childe, and it's been guilting him since that very first night, which is part of why he was so adamant about doing right by her, treating her as an individual and encouraging her: so he could alleviate the guilt of having used up someone else's natural life for a totally selfish reason. Her finding out brought over a century's worth of buried guilt back at once, and so instead of handling this like a rational person, he decided to leave her. And to make matters worse, it'll be years before their blood bond erodes, so the entire time they're just going to be acutely aware of each other's misery.

Leland of Bremenium: expert problem-solver.

Fabulous lighting, as always. I'm horrible at lighting, so I look at your stuff for inspiration. And the folds in Claris' dress are amazing!

You know, undead or not, men tend to follow that pattern, don't they? I guess if you put it in that context, Leland's really no different: He basically pulls a, "CRAP, unforseen obstacle that I must flee from rather than discuss my feelings." Leaving Claris miserable and himself miserable and making this an opportune moment for a Lifetime movie viewing.

If, you know, Lifetime had existed 1000 years ago. Which would have made the plague a million times worse.

OMG NO WAY, I'm... so flattered by that. Lighting has never really been a strong point for me. Even now that I'm more confident with it than I used to be, I really just kind of wing it about 90% of the time. Now you know my secret shame. :sadangel: (Actually, I'm not that secretive about it, I'll come right out and say that lighting and backgrounds are two MAJOR, major weak points for me. :dead: )

It does seem to be a bit of a recurring theme, especially in fiction. ;) I was telling someone on here my theory about vampires constantly being in a state of emotional arrested development, because even though they can become very, VERY old, part of what makes us older EMOTIONALLY comes from brain chemistry and physiological aging, and the other part comes from the experience of having to cope with the process of being older and eventually comprehending one's mortality. If your body never changes after a certain point, if you never have that experience (even though you might have myriad other experiences), can you ever really have "grown up"? This is my excuse as to why vampires never seem to deal with their problems in a mature way, in spite of having decades or even centuries over the average person. Leland was societally an adult, but he was 21 when he was made, and in many ways he's still a douchebag 21-year-old guy. Claris was 17, and she was also an adult at her time, but both of these guys never really experienced what we now consider an "adolescence", even though modern psychology is aware that the transition from child to adult hardly happens overnight. So I've always kind of imagined them in some ways being in a persistent, eternal state of Idiotic Young Person-dom, even if they're actually really, really old.

OMG I'm sorry this turned into a text wall. D: But if you think it totally sounds like a Lifetime movie, I WILL NOT DISAGREE. Part of the fun of this storyline is having a ton of ridculous epic romance-y antics IN ALL THE BEST OUTFITS THROUGHOUT HISTORY.

Lighting is the bane of my existence, I swear. And backgrounds. I always cop out on both because I am lazy and just want to get to the good part.

You really wouldn't know that you struggle with them, though. They look amazing!

That's a really interesting way to look at it. I actually never thought about it like that before. It's kind of like the "Claudia effect." She was stuck in this child's body, but mentally a woman. Talk about disorienting. And I'm sure Claris and Leland went through that same sense of confusion. A certain sense of wisdom was bound to come with their age, because, really, you can't live thousands of years without learning a thing or two about how the world works. But you're right. They never really aged the way we're meant to, and that's got to be extremely weird for them.

I KNOW. It's like drama-rama in fabulous time period outfits. I love it to pieces! (Plus, they both have fabulous hair, which is even better. Leland's hair is like something out of a Pantene commercial, and Claris...she has my dream hair, not gonna lie. It's just bursting with pre-Raphaelite awesomeness. So much love.)

OH NOES!!

Firstly sorry i have not commented in - almost forever!! Including replying to other comments which i will do at some point....

Ah, i was so sad when i saw this, and then read it.....no Leland, way to handle your baggage, men are such nightmarish creatures!!

:( Personally very sad cause Leland was my favourite character, will be sad not to see him anymore!!

Sad for Claris as well, literally no one can imagine how she would feel at loosing such a long time companion and love, ive only been with my hubby for 8 years and i still couldn't imagine it!

As always beautiful drawing and very detailled and interesting backstory...love it! (while hating it at the same time if that makes sense!??)

OH NOES!!! :noes: I KNOOOOW, so sad. :sadangel:

Glad to see you again! I was wondering whether eventually there would be a nice string of comments from you to answer. And inevitably turn into page-long things. :XD:

And OMG IT'S SO SAD, I know. LELANNNND... :shakefist: If I have anything to say about it (and I have MUCH to say on this subject), this will absolutely not be the end of this. Claris may not be the get-up-and-go-get-him-back type that Rian was when Farael decided to do something dumb and break up with her, but she is extremely patient and has literally all the time in the world. Leland's a smart cookie; eventually he'll swallow his shame and find his way back to her. Whether she'll be accomodating and forgiving after so much time... that has yet to be seen. :shakefish:

This is beautiful! *_* I loved the painting here, you really conveyed a sense of mass and volume through the shading! Her face looks very beautiful too, and I love the little hand gripping the chin, I feel you gave an added subtlety and variation to a common gesture, making it much more natural. =D

And, despite his being such a bastard with Claris... I think I like Leland even more! :rofl: And not because he's gorgeous, not in a Draco In Leather Pants kind of way; it's because I love seriously flawed, selfish characters. Personality flaws are SO much more interesting when they are used against the character's loved ones, and not just flawed "by themselves"... like, for example, a rebellious or impetuous hero, his flaws aren't interesting if they only bring harm to himself or the villain; it's when the other characters react (badly) to them that it gets interesting. ...I don't know if I could explain myself. ^^;

Anyway, I like selfish, insecure, immature characters, they're much more realistic and interesting! =D Even if in the end you kinda wish for them to get better just for the sake of a happy ending. xD

OMG YESSSSS, I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW ;A; I mean, I was loving Leland to death, but the entire time I was waiting to find out that he was SERIOUSLY flawed. He was FAR too perfect for his own good. :cries: The thing is, she could totally forgive him for using her as a wife replacement for about five minutes in the beginning... she might NOT be able to forgive him for just abandoning her because of his own self-righteousness instead of, you know, TALKING TO HER ABOUT IT. :stupidme: I do feel really bad for him, because by the end he genuinely knew Claris better and loved her more for who she was than he had ever loved his wife, but apparently that doesn't count in the face of his oh-so-special principles. For as much as he MAY have wanted to use her to start out with, she was in the process of metamorphosing into a better person because of him and finally starting to gain an understanding of what it's like to be in control of one's own life, and then he just had to go and arrest all that progress at the expense of BOTH their happiness. Jerk. =P

Lol, sorry, rant. :XD: I RANT BECAUSE I LOVE. I'm sure you understand how it is when characters do really stupid things and you're just so exasperated with them. I suspect their ending may be a happy one because we're doing it in RPG format and even during bleak, depressing games Alan HATES finishing on a depressing note, but I'm really gunning for a long hard road to get there. Between her needing to figure out who she is without his influence affecting her, and him needing to forgive himself and get back to where he was, there's potentially a lot of change that'll go on there and man, what if they don't even LIKE each other by the time they see each other next?! :fear: I'll still love him though, c'mere Leland... :flirty:

Not TOO soon, though, I tend to do my best couple art when the couple in question is broken up. The letter text... if you blew it up to its working size, you might be able to identify the shape of a word or two, but it's probably illegible. It DOES actually read the full text ~Arthulin gave me of the letter Leland wrote (or at least as much as I could cram onto a mass of pixels that size), but I had to write VERY small so it probably can't really be read properly. ;)

You did an awesome job on this pic! There are so many different tones, but at the same time they all look a little dull, gray, like what she's feeling right now, sadness =(

 Yes indeed! I'm all for well-preserved undead; all the gorgeousness of a full complete person, none of the unpleasant bodily functions. :giggle:

And OMG, YES, I know, it's totally sad. See... she doesn't want him to slip away exactly, but she's NOT going to try to track him down and bring him back, because 1) he told her not to, and she has a very hard time disobeying anything he outright tells her to do, and 2) she's not yet sure how she feels about the whole thing. At this point, her ENTIRE sense of self-image is based on what he thinks of her, and by leaving her, he's reinforcing her idea that he never wanted her to begin with, and that he was cruel to ever say he did. I think she actually lacks the confidence to even THINK about trying to win him back (unlike Rian, who has it in spades, which is a good thing :giggle:). He messed up REALLY good, and if he wants her back, he's going to have to man up and prove he thinks she's worth fighting for. (I THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT THIS, AHHHHH)

They're both Brujah. Claris is, like... the most un-Brujah Brujah EVER. It's worth noting that at this time period, before the Camarilla and the Sabbat were even established, the Brujah were a whole lot cooler. Warrior-scholars yeaaaaaah. :iconunfplz:

Awww, but the not-so-well-preserved deserve some love too!! XD You're hurting Lonerin's feelings! D8

AH BUT THINK ABOUT STORY IS VERY GOOOOD *.* But yeah, it must have been really sad for her, to discover all about his past life and so i.i nnnnnnn >_< And you sai she has a hard time disobeying what he says, is it because they're blood-bound?

I don't have much knowledge of VtM, but I've created a character for a campaign with some friends, which I never got to play, but I'm a little fond of her :3 she's a nun. A Toreador always tried to seduce and embrace her but her faith in the Lord was always stronger, until he succeeded =( But still, she's totally unhappy with her undeath right now, she strongly believes that God will help her find a cure for this 'desease'. Now she just wanders from town to town trying to comfort people in need, and because it helps her to keep her faith!

NOOOOO LONERIN I STILL LOVE YOU!!!! *huggles him, even as bits fall off* :giggle: I ALWAYS like 'em pretty whether they're alive OR dead, don't take it personally! :meow:

She had a hard time disobeying him even before they were bound, just because it's who she is. He was her benefactor, and she finds it totally impossible to ignore that, even if he blew it. For a very long time she was basically programmed to feel gratitude and be willing to serve anyone who helped her, and now that the one she loved above anyone else has basically told her he doesn't want her anymore, she just doesn't know WHAT to do with herself. So she's going to start a convent! :D Partially it's because she craves companionship, but partially she really does want to do a service to any world-weary vampire ladies out there who need a break from the living world before moving on with their, um... lives? Sure. Lives. :XD: It sounds like she and your girl would get along! :D Not that your girl would necessarily seek out the company of other vampires, but it definitely sounds like she needs a little cloistering.
