Although I spend most of my time working on the shading of objects – how light interacts with the surface to produce the details of the object's appearance – I have tried my hand at modeling objects as well. I built the pier in this image myself, using the most basic elements of the modeling software – cylinders and cubes. The cylinders became the posts of the pier; I squashed and squeezed the cubes until they were the same shape as the planks, then maneuvered them into place. Although I did use some images to get an idea of what piers look like, the design I eventually used was not based upon any single picture.
Originally I had planned to complete the image with a checkered blanket and a picnic basket; however, I found I liked the pier better without all of those accessories.
