Description
This is a biogeography map Zveiner and I did for Atlas Altera. A map like this will give you an idea of what kind of animals and animal lineages one might find in a part of the world, mostly due to evolutionary processes being affected by geographic, climate, and even tectonic changes. Our map is an ode to maps made by Alfred Russel Wallace and his infamous Wallace Line between Borneo and Sulawesi. This one is a map on faunal distribution patterns in the world of Altera, or zoogeography. To see other and more serious maps from the project, go to AtlasAltera.com or r/atlasaltera. You can also take a deep dive on Youtube.com/@atlasaltera
You will find that some of the hierarchical geographical levels of analysis differ from Wallace's. My schema is a balance of qualitative and quantitative territorial groupings informed by Holt et al.'s mapping of zoogenetic turnover for each birds, amphibians, and mammals, as well as Schmidt-Wallace's original provinces, which privileged mammals. See the main schematic in Holt et al.’s article on their proposed update to Wallace's regions, plus the subsequent comment and critique (mostly for transition zones understanding), and then their response to the critique.
