Deus Ex Machina 'Orchid Armor' by Tekka-Croe Deus Ex Machina 'Orchid Armor' by Tekka-Croe
Ever since I posted that reference sheet a few days ago, I've been working nonstop on this. Please, don't click "download," as the full image is about 4500x7000 pixels, and might make your computer explode.

"Deus ex machina" is a Latin phrase meaning "god out of the machine." It is defined generally as "a plot device whereby a seemingly inextricable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new character, ability, or object." According to Horace's Ars Poetica, a poet "must never resort to a god from the machine to solve their plots."

I disagree. Y'know why? I like invincible battlesuits, that's why.

Height: 6'6" (Karic Standard)*
Weight: 340 lbs (Karic Standard)
Power Source: Cold fusion microreactor
Armament: Condensed-particle Carbine (x2), Anti-armor Combat knife (x2), "Snubmachine gun" SMG (x4)

The "Orchid" series of battlesuits were designed and constructed by Taylor Heavy Industries for Karic's "Warchild" supersoldier program. It's considerable weight is counteracted by a combination of powerful motors and lightweight composite materials.

Fully laden and charged, the Orchid can turn a supersoldier into a nigh-unstoppable one-man army, untouchable to anything short of a concentrated artillery barrage. It's personal energy-shielding system makes weapons as ordinarily potent as RPGs just as useless as small arms fire.

Its primary weapons, a pair of experimental particle carbines, can potentially be used as a mid-long range sniping weapon apart from the suit. The suit has four sub-arm manipulators, two on top of the thighs, and two shielding the elbows
(They're white, and have a stretched hexagon on them). Each of these sub-arms is capable of wielding a submachine gun, and when fully equipped, give the Orchid an omni-directional field of fire. The sub-arms can only be used by Karic's supersoldiers, thanks to their neural uplinks and increased mental capacity.

The standard paint scheme of the Orchid battlesuits is overall charcoal gray camouflage, lacking any personal, factional, or unit markings.

The variant displayed was captured along with Reina Cloude** by the notorious Saldean*** freelancer, "Timberwolfe" (Granted, she was not using it at the time of capture). Reina's suit is presumed to be in lockdown mode, as it has not been reported in any engagements. If suit is sighted and operational, do not engage. Retreat immediately and call in orbital strike.

*In the universe of Novus Imperium, Karic is humanity's homeworld. It is uniformly covered in a blanket of multilevel city, and has an artificial ring, as well as several deep-space colonies in orbit at Karic's Lagrange Points. It is the most powerful planet in the galaxy.

**For a full overview of Reina Cloude, see here: [link]

***Saldea is an enormous solid planet. It is inhabited by humanoids, who are heavily muscled to counter the planet's high gravity. On an earth-like planet, a Saldean will likely seem to possess superhuman powers.

I was wondering if I could use the armor, but redesign it to be a mech

Actually gives me a Zone of the Enders vibe, especially with the angular plating set-up. Very, very cool!

this seems heavily based on the Evangelion (I think its the helmet) which I think make this mech suit look awesome.
JRillustration Featured By Owner May 17, 2016
Wow!!! A very interesting design. Maybe it's just me but it seems like a cross between Gundam, Metal Gear Ray and Macross Frontier.
Is there an updated version of this mech suit? I'd love to see more of that design in your future work.
AgentBladelock Featured By Owner Mar 9, 2016
Looks absolutely amazing! Think the leg design is really cool--just wondering, though, is the pilot holding up that massive, freaking awesome-looking helmet with just her neck? that thing's gotta weigh like 20+ lbs!

Deus Ex Machina! *ding*

I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist.

Do you do requests?
MetalicSoul Featured By Owner Mar 23, 2014
I like the upper body armor designs but the legs, I doubt you can use legs like those in the suit. The legs are more for a full machine then a person being inside of it.
warhammermaster Featured By Owner Mar 11, 2014
pretty neat, but i gotta ask, how would a WH40k space marine in one on one combat armed similarly?

Why is there nothing on this planet that looks like this! X((
Etheral117 Featured By Owner Sep 25, 2013
I have to say, I found this for the first time a long time ago, and I have absolutely no idea I didn't favourite it then and there. Of course, I've fixed that problem now. This suit's anatomy makes it probably the most original power-armor concept I've ever seen.

Is there a place where I can follow Novus Imperium's story? This looks absolutely beautiful.

I'm guessing that gun was inspired by the beam magnum from Gundam Unicorn?
Tekka-Croe Featured By Owner Oct 22, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Indeed. It's probably the most obvious nod to Hajime Katoki's designs in my my work, though his style has certainly had a strong influence on my mechanical design.

I kinda figured that, I know that energy magazine anywhere.

Legs are really cool, I don't think that yellow and the blue on the helm matches though.

Cool power suit design, although the rifle looks a lot like the Unicorn Gundam's beam rifle... do you think ehh?

this seems familiar.

Very Cool! The design gets me to thinking of Ghost in the Shell, Bubblegum Crisis, Zone of the Enders, a ton of stuff I enjoyed as a kid!

SO awesome looking...must not are a god in disguise.

Also noticed the Unicorn rifle there...sly person you, "borrowing" ideas? :D
Tekka-Croe Featured By Owner Jan 10, 2011  Professional Digital Artist
Indeed. I absolutely love the Unicorn's design (and, honestly, everything else that Hajime Katoki has ever designed). Katoki's works have been a huge influence in my recent mechanical designs.

Hey, nothing wrong with that, the Unicorn is a solid design indeed. And so is this picture, i love your work man.

as for the gun... i see someone loves the unicorn gundams' rifle ;D
Rob-Cavanna Featured By Owner Oct 28, 2010
Really spectacular looking armor!! Does this relate at all to the "Deus Ex" Game franchise, or all your original creation? pardon my ignorance. ^^;

And thanks for explaining that origin of the term. Somewhat ashamed I didn't know already.
Also strongly disagree w/ Ars Poetic rule. All of the best Sci-fi fiction seems to stand in opposition to this dogma.

Do i see some unicorn inspiration in the rifle XD

How could I not, in my oppinion unicorn has some of the best design aesthetics of any gundam series.
KayKove Featured By Owner Sep 5, 2010  Student General Artist
I don't mean to sound like I'm giving empty praise, because I'm not, but if you're not either designing this stuff for a living or planning on it, something is wrong with you.
Tekka-Croe Featured By Owner Sep 5, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
Don't worry, I am most definitely planning on going into concept artwork as a career.
