A Time For Heroes

Five weeks were still to summer, and the sky was a glorious blue. So great was the sky, so colorfully blue, it was like some Maker had been inspired to create it. Its wonderful firmament soothed the hearts and minds of those who peered up to admire it. Beneath this sky, far below the beautiful span of blue, roads curled through a forest’s patchwork and farmers’ amber fields. At its center a splashing river gently frothed and stirred, and on both sides lay a peaceful town. The sun claimed the river and town with its glory and welcome heat, amid the soft clatter of industry — warming the bare feet of children passing by. Across the small town of Normalton, people of all ages were celebrating life’s small triumphs. The country had mostly recovered from the nuclear fires and trials of the Last Great War, and the challenges of the Forties were a dark memory thankfully fading. Just Plastic Rain (Short Story)

Elise wandered into the alley, slumped and aching but with the rain dripping down her nose. It wasn't even rain anymore it was more microplastics than water. They rubbed off the condensation gathering, tickling on the tip and saw them standing there as they had said they would. The disheveled man mutters. "You came-... I'm gracious. I've been planning this roughly for days but-" Elise cleared her throat. Then she was silent. "The pieces of this distorter won't decay like the last one I sold you." The man handed her the brown bag wrapped device. Elise took the distorter in her hands, began to unwrap it, large drops of "rain" turning the packet darker where they landed and were absorbed quickly by the textured pulp. "You already paid with your art, do you want me to show you how it works I could-?" Elise shot him a look that silenced him. She didn't need their help. They didn't even know what art was, they had never made anything besides algorithms and pell runners.

Reimagining: Alice in Wonderland (2010)

We are revisiting one of my earlier ideas on how to reimagine a troubled film. Alice in Wonderland is one of those films that I enjoyed, but thought more could have been done with the screenplay, characters, themes, and world. Tim Burton’s 2010 vision paved the way for Disney to needlessly remake all of their animated classics for cheap cash grabs, whilst simultaneously offering nothing new to the stories, and reducing them to empty, uninspired husks. Disney have weaponised nostalgia as a key to box office success. Still, Alice does have some positive traits to it, and was popular enough to gain an attraction in Shanghai Disneyland as a very imaginative labyrinth. Unfortunately, the movie has a few issues, primarily revolving around the character of Alice Kingsleigh. In a film with such weird and mad characters, Alice is a complete cipher in terms of personality and motivation. For a character who is trying to achieve her own sense of independence and identity, Alice does little to

Tim Burton’s live action remake/sequel of Alice in Wonderland paved the way for Disney to remake their classic animated films en masse into cheap, live action movies, with a couple of exceptions. Alice was a visually decent film, but tried to fit the weird world of Wonderland into a stereotypical fantasy narrative between good and evil, like something from a 1980s kids show. Luckily, neither Shelly nor I needed to go anywhere in a hurry that night. We both slept through the night, and when we woke, our neighbors had already headed off, presumably in hopes of catching the ferry so they might make it to class, though I had no reason to question if they’d make it on time, despite the fact that today was Saturday. Nonetheless, I had been advised by several rangers in Windigo not to rely on assuming you’d make your appointments. What they did leave, however, was a web address in the dirt. Curious, I took a photo of the website - it had a Wisc.edu prefix and looked safe enough - so I vowed to check it out when I had internet before scratching over the markings in the event it was intended only for us. As Shelly went into the bay to get cleaned up, I fired up the camp stove and fixed breakfast. Heating the cast iron skillet along with our kettle for tea water, I added a package of cubed maple-flavored Spam and sautéed the meat with half a bag of potatoes

To reach the High Falls, our route east took about ten minutes before approaching Ryden’s Border Store - a rather patriotic gas station with a very nice gift shop where we topped off the tank, checked on the tires and used the facilities. From there, it was less of a jump than a skip before coming just to the east where to the parking lot for the Grand Portage State Park had a Minnesota Welcome Center and a short trailhead to the falls. Though I brought the tripod and camera again, I didn’t bring any towels along, realizing very quickly that this area was indeed more popular. I could count almost a dozen cars in the parking lot. Still, Shelly had us head up the trail which was about a half mile and fairly level, though it took me about six minutes longer than it did her. Realizing quickly that we weren’t alone, however, I still took the time to set up the camera and take a few stills, including a bulb shot or two that gave me some good motion stills of the rolling water.

Everything Wrong With: Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Reimagining: Alice in Wonderland (2010)

We are revisiting one of my earlier ideas on how to reimagine a troubled film. Alice in Wonderland is one of those films that I enjoyed, but thought more could have been done with the screenplay, characters, themes, and world. Tim Burton’s 2010 vision paved the way for Disney to needlessly remake all of their animated classics for cheap cash grabs, whilst simultaneously offering nothing new to the stories, and reducing them to empty, uninspired husks. Disney have weaponised nostalgia as a key to box office success. Still, Alice does have some positive traits to it, and was popular enough to gain an attraction in Shanghai Disneyland as a very imaginative labyrinth. Unfortunately, the movie has a few issues, primarily revolving around the character of Alice Kingsleigh. In a film with such weird and mad characters, Alice is a complete cipher in terms of personality and motivation. For a character who is trying to achieve her own sense of independence and identity, Alice does little to

Tim Burton’s live action remake/sequel of Alice in Wonderland paved the way for Disney to remake their classic animated films en masse into cheap, live action movies, with a couple of exceptions. Alice was a visually decent film, but tried to fit the weird world of Wonderland into a stereotypical fantasy narrative between good and evil, like something from a 1980s kids show. Luckily, neither Shelly nor I needed to go anywhere in a hurry that night. We both slept through the night, and when we woke, our neighbors had already headed off, presumably in hopes of catching the ferry so they might make it to class, though I had no reason to question if they’d make it on time, despite the fact that today was Saturday. Nonetheless, I had been advised by several rangers in Windigo not to rely on assuming you’d make your appointments. What they did leave, however, was a web address in the dirt. Curious, I took a photo of the website - it had a Wisc.edu prefix and looked safe enough - so I vowed to check it out when I had internet before scratching over the markings in the event it was intended only for us. As Shelly went into the bay to get cleaned up, I fired up the camp stove and fixed breakfast. Heating the cast iron skillet along with our kettle for tea water, I added a package of cubed maple-flavored Spam and sautéed the meat with half a bag of potatoes

To reach the High Falls, our route east took about ten minutes before approaching Ryden’s Border Store - a rather patriotic gas station with a very nice gift shop where we topped off the tank, checked on the tires and used the facilities. From there, it was less of a jump than a skip before coming just to the east where to the parking lot for the Grand Portage State Park had a Minnesota Welcome Center and a short trailhead to the falls. Though I brought the tripod and camera again, I didn’t bring any towels along, realizing very quickly that this area was indeed more popular. I could count almost a dozen cars in the parking lot. Still, Shelly had us head up the trail which was about a half mile and fairly level, though it took me about six minutes longer than it did her. Realizing quickly that we weren’t alone, however, I still took the time to set up the camera and take a few stills, including a bulb shot or two that gave me some good motion stills of the rolling water.
