Each week, we interview a different artist and share their art and featured answers on our official Facebook page. This week's featured artist is !
What is the first piece of art you remember making?
The absolute earliest thing I can remember is actually a little collab with my grandpa! My grandpa would always build things and he made a little, wooden table with folding legs. And I got to paint a picture on it! It was a lineup of me, my brother, my mom and my dad. It also had a rainbow and that classic “corner sun”. I believe it also had a little dog and cat on it despite my family not having a dog nor a cat at the time.
How would you describe your style to someone who hasn't seen it?
I don’t really know what my style is since each piece I do tends to look pretty different. It can range from really cartoony (like Big City Greens, the show I work on) or really anime, since that was my main influence growing up. I will say that my default style falls somewhere in between. I draw in simplified anime proportions with more cartoony features!
What emotions do you like evoking with your art?
Joy! Every once in a while I’ll do a more sad, emotional piece but for the most part I just like doing silly drawings! I like making people smile and laugh.
What's one myth about art that you want to shine truth on?
That it can’t be a sustainable career. This myth is the reason why so many people are discouraged from pursuing art. It’s something you can make a living out of, especially if you go into commercial art. And nowadays, artists can also make money without necessarily working for big studios thanks to social media and platforms like Patreon! There are just so many different ways to do what you love and pay the bills at the same time.
Your love of Pokemon shines through much of your work. What pulled you to the franchise/characters?
It was probably, partially because I wasn’t allowed to watch or play Pokémon when I was young and I wanted what I couldn’t have. But when I WAS allowed, I was immediately more so drawn to the human characters, specifically Team Rocket! They were just so silly and different and I loved their style. Plus, they all had tragic backstories and so much more character depth than any character I’d seen in other shows at this point in my life. The perfect characters.
Your art is very expressive. What is a tip you would have for people wishing to make their art have more emotion?
Honestly just watch more cartoons! Cartoons faces and poses are often so much more expressive than an actual human being. I get a lot of inspiration from OK KO, The Amazing World of Gumball and the newest seasons of Pokémon! If your style isn’t really cartoony, it’s still really good to learn from the extremeness of cartoons. There’s a lot to be learned from the pushed posing and expressions that you can apply to your work on a more subtle level.
What is a piece of advice you've received that has stuck with you?
Draw from life! Be observational! This helps with your technical skills as well as your ability to make art that people connect with. Whether it be observing how people pose and emote, or how they talk and emotionally react to things! It’s something that’s really helped me as a board artist. Just observing poses and facial expressions has helped me in the drawing department and picking up on peoples’ different senses of humor has helped me with my writing. So many of the jokes I write are loosely based off of real conversations and situations my friends and I have been in.

I think likes Jessie. Just guessing :þ
Anyway, super cute art. I've seen you Disney princesses of color the other day a lot on twitter and it inspired many of my art friends to draw them like that too.
Funny and quirky art. Expressions are great.
However these artist highlights feel rather icky knowing that the artists are leaving deviantart because of how bad the Eclipse is, most of them deleting years wroth of content from the site, and because of the uncaring staff that ignores the community all the time. Fix the site.
