Create an Artist Avatar!

DeviantArt and 3dsense Media School, a leading digital arts school in Asia, have teamed up to bring you the Artist Avatar Challenge! This is an opportunity to design an original character based on a prompt for the chance to win cash, a portfolio review, and Wacom products!

Are you an artist hoping to grow your skills? 3dsense Media School is sponsoring a challenge with a special category just for students!

Your challenge is to create an "Art-vatar" — an artistic alter ego that uses unconventional tools for their masterpiece. The form your character takes is yours to decide, so don't be afraid to think outside of the box! When developing the character, consider how they make their art and what inspires their creativity.

  1. A character for a major brand contest.

  2. A contest with lesser prize but more winners.

These contests are great! I loved this one!

  1. the current themes seem to be focused a lot on characters. Perhaps we can have contests focused on landscapes/objects/something else? Or we can have one based on the medium used, so a contest specifically for traditional art, crafts (I know DA had done this at least once), or even literature (I would love to see that!).

  2. I like the current ones a lot, combining a cash prize with art supplies!

Flimango's avatar
  1. I enjoyed doing the character contests

  2. Maybe some traditional art supplies? idk

Emeraldus's avatar

I really enjoyed this challenge! I'm so excited for the results! Thank you for this opportunity!

1. For the future contests, I would love to see more original characters. Maybe a fighter with special powers? Or original mermaids? (I'm a sucker for fantasy settings)

2. The prizes today are already very good, so I would like to see similar prizes too for future contests!

Matsumiki11's avatar

!. The concept of the next contest that I would love to see in the future is another OC art challenge but with a twist you'll create an OC in a show/tv series/anime(hope you get what I', saying)

2. full set of copic sketch markers

Nelliiii's avatar
  1. I honestly loved this art challenge, but I would also love something more specific, because I feel like the criteria was too broad. Maybe something like a specific thing or person, or mythical person on character.

  2. I love the inclusion of drawing tablets in the competition, as well as the inclusion of a cash prize so I think that they are great as they are!

I also agree that there should be stricter and more clarity about who can enter in which competitions so that it is fairer for the students who enter like myself.

Thankyou also for making the contests available to deviantarts

What contest themes would you like to see in the future?

The Contests are amazing atm I love the character creation contests, but it's cool when were creating fanart on games, that's probably my favourite.

My dream contest would be concept, environment or character design for games like final fantasy, the last guardian and, dragon quest

What types of prizes would you like to see in the future

The prizes are awesome as they are I think

Cant wait for the results :happybounce:

Saiya6CIT's avatar

honestly for the price an only cash option option would be awesome!

The idea that you have 2 different categories so everyone has a chance to win (especially kids and beginners like myself) is great but the only thing that throws it off that anybody can enter both categories I have seen many art entries that joined both categories making the person who have more experienced and knowledge about art have more chances to win in the rising star category if he or she doesn't win in the skill over all category

(sorry for my bad English. English is not my 1st language)

Mr-Fizzle's avatar

As far as having engagement on this platform, this specific contest seems to get separation of skill tiers right.

In many other contests on here, there seemed to be an overwhelming sense that the only people to win (and sometimes the only people to have any public showcase) were people of equal or incredibly close skill to the artists involved in the running of these contests. It made it seem like the majority of artists or (even slightly) lower skill levels might as well not participate.

For this one, having separate tiers and prizes really feels more inclusive to artists who are still working on their craft. I personally don't feel I have the time or skill to compete with the big dogs, so I only submitted to the rising stars category.

I understand that it's very specific to have these sorts of opportunities for these kinds of prizes (as far as the large amount given to winners), so I wouldn't say this level of reward is a must. But, something close to it is always a good attraction.

As for themes, most of the themes in past contests seem reasonable and fun.

The only thing I would really emphasize as a place needing improvement is that it was very confusing whether someone was restricted from entering the overall skill and rising stars categories simultaneously. I wasn't sure, so I took the safe route of submitting to the most appropriate one.

Thanks for reading.

So like when will the winners be announce??

Blunell's avatar

We can't know for sure, but I'd advise against it, in case the staff has access to the deviation's history.

meloin's avatar

thank you so much! Can I note you? I really want to ask about something :'D

Blunell's avatar

Sure, go ahead :)

So excited to find out the results for this contest! I was confused about the tags, but I think I got it right for my submission with the "artistavatarchallenge"

1. This is my witch artist avatar who makes art with magic, and treats magic like art. She has a things for stars and is a hoarder, collecting stars and magical creature findings (phoenix feathers, unicorn horse shoes, the like) for inspiration in her spells.

2. Art school helped me learn a lot about color and anatomy, but I would love to go back to school to learn more about creating environments, better rendering skills, and 3D modeling.

3. I want to be a book illustrator.
