November 13th marks the start of Transgender Awareness Week, a week dedicated to raising awareness of transgender people and the issues and challenges they face. The week of November 13th to the 19th is focused primarily on advocating for the rights of transgender people and drawing attention to the prejudice and discrimination faced by the trans community, culminating in Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

First observed in 1999 and recognized annually since then, Transgender Day of Remembrance is a day to memorialize and honor those who were killed as a result of transphobia. Transgender people are some of the least protected and most frequently harmed individuals, and with each year, the need for structural and societal change to protect and better the well-being of the trans community becomes more apparent.

Removing Dead Names on DeviantArt

Many, but not all, trans and non-binary people adopt a new name they feel better fits their identity. In those cases, the name they were assigned at birth is considered a “dead name” because it does not represent the life they are now living. Being referred to by or having to use a dead name can trigger dysmorphia or “out” someone who is not public about their transgender identity. Even online it can be painful and invalidating to still need to use that name with emails or usernames, and making a whole new account is often a hassle.

If your dead name is a part of your DeviantArt username, please reach out to Customer Service between November 13th and November 20th, and our team will facilitate a username change for free. DeviantArt is meant to be a home to welcome artists and be a space to express oneself fully, and we hope that by offering this service, we are able to help you feel comfortable and live as your authentic self online.
