Well, now that PAX Prime 2010 has been over for about two months now, I've decided to post this.
Here's the little story to go along with this:
The two guys in the image are Marcus Lehto and Joe Tung. Basically the two figureheads at Bungie for the development of Halo: Reach (aka the guys who were running the NobleActual blog). Before Joe Tung or the Engineer were even thought of, it was just Marcus Lehto as Sgt. Pete Stacker. In the Halo trilogy, Sgt. Stacker was an NPC that was modeled after Lehto. I thought it'd be cool if I made it a little bit realistic looking. Skip forward two weeks later and the illustration is complete. Boring, boring summer.
Hey, wait a sec! PAX is coming up, I'm going, Bungie's going. Surely Marcus and Joe will be there!
It's a late September night for me, my brother is spending the night so he can take all three of us in the morning. I'm nervous in making all the preparations to try and meet the people I knew from the Halo-community. And I've got this baby framed, ready to give to Marcus and Joe.
The morning is harsh. I only got four hours of sleep, and I had a long day ahead of me. My brothers and I got there pretty easily, with little problems. So I'm going into the Convention Center with this thing under my arms, waiting for the first of two Halo panels in that day.
To cut this story short, I ended up giving this to Sandbox Desginer, Sage Merril at the end of the second Halo panel. Marcus left the room before I could get up to the front. I was so discouraged that I didn't get to meet Marcus or Joe that I left straight afterwards.
According to a guy I know from halo.bungie.org (kanbo), some of the Bungie people were actually trying to find me. Also, thanks to it being the future, a guy in Australia (Hedgemony) noticed on Twitter that Environment Artist Jason Sussman thought it was "truly epic". All of this was happening while I was lost in the Parking Garage. Fuck.
The moral of the story is to go to bed on time (as I post this image at 3 am). If you're tired, then you'll probably lack the confidence you need to kick ass and take names during the day.
You've come a long way in your artwork. When I saw a couple of your drawings featured on HBO I was kinda like "ehhhh" (even though I most likely couldn't do any better). Now you've got your artwork in thousands of copies of Halo Evolutions and you're making astounding renderings of Bungie employees on Halo characters.
You are one of the things that makes inspiration happen in aspiring young artists like me. Keep up the good work.
