Hellcat
Copic marker and colored pencil on paper over digital background
2019

Despite the fact that I wasn't terribly happy with how Patsy turned out in season 3 of JESSICA JONES, I was still inspired enough by her to do a pinup of the comic character.  I'm intrigued by how Marvel took a 50's teen romance character and turned her into a Marvel superhero.  It was such an interesting choice.  Even all these years later, it's still completely out of left field and, as far as I know, pretty unique among modern comic book heroes.  It really makes her stand out, despite being an otherwise lackluster character.  I wanted to capture that with the background, reminding us of the "wholesome" and somewhat silly character she used to be in contrast with the sexy "hellcat" of this picture.  I'm only sad that the covers of issues 15 & 16 got faded out, since they contained buttons declaring "More gay romantic tales of America's #1 teen-ager!" and "5,000,000 teenagers love the experiences of Patsy Walker!"  Yeah...  I bet they do.

Awesome piece, Sir! Great to see Hellcat drawn by you. Fun rendering and expression, and nice to see the juxtaposition with the old covers... agreed, it was a bold move!

Thanks.  She was a fun character to draw.  I wish I had more time to dedicate to this sort of art.

The 50's, when gay meant happy and mom meant cook (Al Bundy).

Love it! The Defenders were my first superhero team comicbook.

Those cover blurbs are absolutely hilarious in the modern mindset.  I should have made sure they were visible.  Ah, well.

You only find comics like that in the low printrun indies, but I think they still make them. I do believe they were a real big deal in the 50's.

Yeah, the 50's were a weird time for comics.  It's all westerns and teen drama.

From what I remember from translated collections (pocket books, not comics) I used to read when visiting friends of my parents, also a lot of war stories.

Man, you did a truly tremendous job drawing and coloring her body here. Such a tight little bod with pert, perky boobs. Also your shading here is wonderful. Really makes her goods pop in all the right ways.

Thank you!  It's the first real pinup piece I've done in a while.  I just rarely have the time.  I didn't actually have the time for this one, but I really needed a fun break from my current work projects.

You really should try and find the time to do fun stuff more often, trust me it's a life saver. Sorry for the late reaction, I've been too busy lately to do pretty much anything.

Nice work. A proper non-eep pin-up for a change. Love the backdrop, nice bit of character history there.

Too bad many people only know her from the tv-show, even if they did show the yellow suit there as well.

I always liked Hellcat. The Defenders were one of my favorite superheroteams growing up, even if the continuing stories didn't make too much sense (the translator was just picking out stories they liked at that time, so issues were skipped and nothing was in chronoligical order. That did get better over time...)

Keep 'm coming. I'm going to try and get something new done sometime soon. Looking forward to seeing some professional work from you as well.

Yeah, I wish I could get caught up.  Seems like the more time passes the more I fall behind.

That sounds familiar, and is kinda what got me where I am now... ...if you want to know I'll send you a note.
