1 TORONTO, CANADA From the outside, the Ben McNally Books bookshop looked no different from any of the other stores on Bay Street, with large glass windows and dark grey metal trim. But on the inside it was beautiful and spacious: parquet flooring, tall wooden bookshelves and a very high ceiling from which dangled attractive chandeliers. The independent bookshop regularly hosted readings, book signings and other literary events. Today there was an excitement in the air and the shop was bustling with customers. In fact there was an orderly cue running from the rear of the store and along its length; then out the door, down Bay Street, and around the corner on Temperance Street past South St Burger. There were even a couple of rented security guards: one stationed at the entrance and the other making sure things stayed orderly inside the bookshop.
