Description
Clouds passed silently overhead, clipping the wolf in and out of shadow. The sky, a eerie shade of pink, cast by a harvest moon, hung like a blanket over the forest. As the wolf peered nervously through the branches, his poor eyesight struggled to focus on the shadowy figure that loomed above him. Fog crept in around him, coiling gently down the sides of the embankment, pooling in the basin where he lay. The forest seemed both deathly still, and frothing with life at the same time. As the fog twisted and turned, moonlight filtered through, fighting for balance against the thousands of tiny shadows cast by the leaves above, and the massive shadow cast by the unknown entity that watched him endlessly.
It felt as if the night would last forever, the wolf dared not go to sleep, for fear had gripped him, and he couldn't even see what seemed to be hunting him from above. The figure shifted its body gently, appearing like it was swimming above the forest floor. The wolf stayed frozen, his breath catching in his chest as he waited.
--
The trees, like reeds, comforted Oon, reminding him of the ocean he'd long since seen. He floated amidst them, his massive body weaving through their trunks with ease, his soft furred body clipping seamlessly through the bark if he didn't fit. He was quite sure the wolf below could see him now, and he watched him with a dull curiosity. He seemed unwell, injured perhaps. The wolf's head scanned back and forth across the sky, perhaps he couldn't see him after all? Or perhaps he couldn't see...
Oon hummed softly, a strange sound that was somehow thunderous and soft at the same time. A low humm, it seemed to vibrate in the Wolf's chest, and he flinched.
He didn't want to torment the wolf, he was simply observing. Floating lower towards the ground, he peered at the creature, moonlight shone against his face, revealing a face white with age, and eyes that were equally pale.
"Oh, he is blind." Oon realized, humming to himself while he thought.
Gazing down at the pile of matted fur, shivering in the fog, Oon felt sorry for the poor creature, and decided to swim into the mournful aura that billowed around him. An unseen cloud of 'lost' that accompanied creatures who were injured or had lost their way.
Dipping his head towards the wolf, he hummed deeply, louder than before. The wolf shrunk back, flattening his ears against his head, and showing his teeth. A weak but persistant fight still clung to his heart. He couldn't tell what it was, but the shadowy mass was growing larger, coming too close. Fear and uncertanty clutched at him.
--
"HooOOoooooom" Oon crooned, "Don't fear." he dipped lower again, squinting his eyes a bit, the shards of shale on his brow clinking together. Focusing, he pushed his energy towards the wolf, a faint glimmer of blue smoke that chased the fog from the area, curling around the wolf, his fur rippling gently in the breeze.
--
The shadow pressed nearly against him, but he was too tired and frightened to move. He felt a strange sensation tingle against his skin, and suddenly he felt lighter. A strange blue cloud faded into view, and a glimmer of panic rushed up at him, lifting him off the ground. For a second he resisted, frightened and aching, but suddenly he realized that the ache in his bones was fading, the cold seemed to melt from him, a strange neutral warmth pushed through his fur, which seemed to be lengthening. His vision began to clear, the boughs above him fading into view, and...before him...a massive whale.
He twitched, startling. "What is that?" he thought.
"Why I'm an esk...as are you now." Oon thought back, pressing his thoughts gently towards the new creature as he gently placed him back on the ground.
The esk froze, his paws pressing gently into the ground as he stared dumbfounded at the furred beast floating above him. "Did you just..."
"Talk...yes. Shh. You will come to learn in time. For now, I've got other places to swim to"
"You're leaving?" The wolf felt so strange...what had happened? What was he? Why did he suddenly want the whale to stay, he'd been so frightened before...
"Please don't go yet...I'm so confused."
"HoooooOOooooNNN..." he crooned at the little spirit. "Too much talk...I tire. I will see you again..."
He'd never been much for words, and the thought of a confused new spirit did not interest him. He'd saved the wolf from a cold and miserable death, and that was all he needed. Turning, he floated off into the fog, disappearing from view much quicker than the wolf had expected.
The wolf looked down, turning to peer at his body, and realized that he definitely wasn't a wolf anymore. A tangle of locust branches clung to his back, their bright green leaves a stark contrast to the dreary forest around him. His tail hung limply behind, a trail of dark fur. He glanced around the forest, taking in all the details. Every leaf, the texture of the tree's bark, the gentle swirls of fog trailing down the hill. It all seemed so very detailed, so beautiful. He'd missed seeing, but even before he'd never seen like this.
This was something new, something magical...and he found himself greatly appreciating every piece of nature that surrounded him.
He inhaled, the cool forest air smelled so crisp and delightful, and he realized he had no mouth. It didn't seem to bother him though, his teeth had ached before, and now nothing ached. He felt connected...to the land, the trees, the earth. Peace swelled within him, and he sat down softly, content to watch the forest for a while.

;u; I've been picturing this image in my mind ever since I designed Oon back in April, I just didn't have the energy, and didn't plan for Canach either, but everything sort of came together perfectly, and I'm so incredibly pleased with how it looks. ;u;
