Build Notes

Definitely the most time consuming but vital part of the build thus far...

So, using the outdoor broom handle rod as a base, I've cut out the two main side faces of the scythe handle and then using a generous smearing of contact cement affixed the faces to the rod itself; contact cement is amazingly useful in this regard, as you can apply it to both faces, and once contact is made between the two surfaces a strong and very permanent bond will be achieved so make sure that the positions of what you are gluing is spot on.

That being said those of you who have glued something together in this setup before will understand that there is still a great degree of bending and unstable flexing and twisting on the side faces when you come to handle the thing. So to overcome this we again turn to my low cost and extremely effective friend the cardboard fin.

As you can see (and feel if you are playing along at home ^^ ), hot gluing a whole heap of these equally spaced cardboard fins up and down along the gaps of the handle before you seal it up provides an instantly noticeable degree of strength and stability that you definitely want in a prop.

This glued together hollow shell of thin plastic sheets suddenly becomes as rigid and durable as if it was made out of a solid piece of wood, but with out the drawback of the weight, that wood as material sometimes presents to a prop when it comes to the issue of wielding.

I must stress this is a rather time consuming task but is essential to the overall strength and will greatly benefit the prop if done correctly in the long run, so put the work in this step and your creation will thank you in return.

As for the construction of the overall handle itself, it very much followed the same techniques used for the scythe head, simply by using tubes of epoxy glue to stick on raised details cut out of wonderflex to the plastic/styrene under body surfaces and topped off with a coat of grey automotive primer to highlight all the noticeable defects and gaps I need to fix up with sanding and filling.

Hello! I really love your projects, and your strategy seems to be the cheapest way to make this particular weapon!
However, i"m slightly confused, for the cardboard pieces, did you apply them to one side of the broom? Or both?
